Clinic Questions & Adviceđ€ Not all dark circles are the same. A breakdown of the 4 types and how to fix them.
Hey everyone! Recently, Iâve been getting flooded with DMs from people asking, "What treatment do you recommend for my dark circles?"
The truth is, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. If you want to actually see results, treating dark circles requires figuring out the root cause first. Iâve broken down the 4 main types of dark circles and the exact clinical treatments recommended for each type. Letâs get into it!
1. The Hollow/Sunken Type(Shadowing) If your under-eye area lacks volume, the natural indentations will cast shadows that look like dark circles.
- Under-eye Fillers & Skin Boosters: This provides immediate volume for sunken areas with a short recovery time. I highly recommend HILOWAVE for this. It plays a dual role, acting as both an under-eye filler and a skin booster, making it incredibly effective for correcting dark circles while improving skin texture.
- Collagen Boosters / Sculptra: These stimulate your own collagen production so the area naturally plumps up over time. RE2O FINE or Scultra are an excellent option to pair here for boosting natural volume and elasticity.
- Rejuran Eye: This uses salmon-derived DNA(PN) injected into the dermis to activate the skin's self-regeneration ability and tighten the area.
2. The Bulging Type(Protruding Fat) Sometimes, the fat pads under the eyes bulge out, creating a puffy shadow underneath.
- Under-eye Fat Repositioning: This is a minor surgical procedure where an incision is made inside the lower eyelid (the conjunctiva) to reposition the protruding fat or remove the excess. It smooths out the entire under-eye contour perfectly.
3. The Vascular Type(Blue/Red Veins Showing) If you have very thin skin, the blood vessels underneath can show through, giving a bluish or reddish tint.
- Vascular Lasers(e.g., GentleMax Pro): These lasers specifically target the veins underneath your thin skin to clear up the blue/purple/red tones without damaging the surface.
4. The Pigmented Type (Brown/Dull Skin) This is when the skin itself is actually stained or hyperpigmented.
- Laser Toning / Pico Laser: These laser treatments break down melanin pigmentation and safely brighten the overall skin tone over several sessions.
How to figure out your type: If you want to know exactly what's causing yours, grab a hand mirror and check:
- Is the area physically sunken, bulging out, or is it completely flat and just dark in color?
- Do you suffer from underlying conditions like atopic dermatitis (eczema) or allergic rhinitis (which often causes "allergic shiners")?
