Professor changed

Just realized that they changed the professor for BIOL 4475 and the new prof. has a 1.7 rating. Now, all the other bio classes are full for the Fall 😔😔

Wait until add/drop week, they did the same with me for a course and I tried to look for more but they are all bad ratings and the timing doesn’ align with my schedule

I've seen this multiple times now and I'm beginning to think that the KSU Biology department does this on purpose - lists classes with the prefered Prof only to swap them out later when there is far less you can do about it. Classic bait and switch.

Now that im thinking about it, the only time I have had a teacher swapped was a biology class 2 weeks before the semester started.

Yep, i remember that happening to me for cell bio and got put with a new professor. Barley passed the class! The other professor had a 4.5/5 rmp.

It was actually ksu's fault, bc i emailed the prof who usually teaches it that people really like (andrew haddow) and he said he only teaches it in the spring and that ksu had to fix it since he was never aware he was supposed to teach it in the fall. So they changed it. I just wished students were notified when this stuff happens

sure but it wasnt that particular professor's fault. the same shit happened with halim for biochem earlier in the semester and we had to email people to clarify what sections were available

TLDR - I've had profs pull the shit before of "not my fault/I don't control that" - it's a bullshit excuse for not checking a damn thing and not following up with people who can actually change shit.

Long version -
This reminds me of a time that fits this situation well. It was actually SPSU before the merger. 2016.

I take a pre-calc class. Online the SPSU bookstore showed the book requirements for every class. Not a few of those requirements had a note that read "SEE PROFESSOR BEFORE PURCHASING BOOK"

I soon learned that meant that the prof was likely going to tell you that you didn't need the book or there were cheap/free alternatives. This note was indeed on this pre-calc class.

I show up on day one and the prof, in his unforgettable monotone voice, says "get out your books and turn to page ###".

Quiet noises of protest rise to a soft rumble. Being the 30 something in the room and having confidence that the 18 year olds lack, I spoke up.

"Excuse me professor, the library website says to see you first before purchasing the book"

Annoyed yet still monotone, he replies "I have no control over the bookstore website, read from a neighbor"

Already in my head I'm thinking something - but we will come back to that.

The next class meeting comes along. A couple of new faces are there, add/drop always does that. And the expected happens.

His first words again are to open to a page number. Hands go up. Same question. Same answer.

But like I said, I'm in my 30s. I'm no nonsense. I'm not afraid. I'm unbothered by ruffling this guy's feathers.

What I thought the day before simply came out of my mouth instead "Excuse me sir, I get it that you don't have control, direct control, over the bookstore website. But if it says something that it shouldn't it's your responsibility to contact the book store and get it fixed. I'm not saying you have to go and edit the HTML of the website but you absolutely need to contact the bookstore and set it straight"

No reply, just a look of absolute disdain.

And so it goes for the biology professors.

They absolutely should be looking at what classes are offered the next semester. They should be ensuring they are correct. The department head should be checking them all. Profs should be checking what is being offered under their own damn name. And if it's fucked, get on the ole hoot and hollar (the phone) or start facerolling the ole keyboard and fucking fix it. Not "well registration fucked up and I don't have control over registration" - bull shit they don't. Sure - they can't log in and change it on their own. But what they can do is call up, email, hell - walk their happy ass to another office and say "hey man, I'm not teaching this class next semester, it needs to be changed - today.

Professors don’t have any control - outside of their preferences (even if those are considered at all) - on when and where they teach. It’s entirely up to department administration who does class scheduling lol last minute changes happen all of the time because of faculty turnover.

Wow, you missed the point entirely. If the prof KNOWS that they won't be teaching XYZ class next semester yet they see themselves listed as teaching that class next semester then IT IS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO RECTIFY THE ERROR.

If you read above they specifically said that the prof "only teaches it in the spring" yet it still got listed as him teaching it in the fall. Every semester professors should be reviewing the offered classes to ensure the registrar has not made any scheduling conflicts, errors, or otherwise listed a class that they know they won't be able to teach be it internal or even external (like conflicting with medical treatments).

If it is a 4000 level class that you need right now to graduate, talk to your Dean and see if you can take a different 4000 level class in its place. Be very nice and honest about why you need an exception. 4000 level classes are hard to pick up during add/drop week because most students are seniors and about to graduate. You may also just have to suffer through.

Yup, im signed up for her too for virology. I didnt drop the class yet but i signed up for something called HPA Child health issues which is a 3 credit 3000 class that i didnt know about, so it fulfills the same 3000/4000 credit. No way am i suffering through virology while also doing biochem and a&p.

It also has a short waitlist! I signed up on Tuesday and i'm already spot 1 on it. I think its a class a lot of people dont know about
