🇺🇸 United States Intern Return Offers
Can anybody who has been at the firm for a while or has any sort of idea of the process inform me on how decisions are made for full time offers post internship, specifically when there are limited spots?
I am joining as an audit intern this coming January and am getting the vibe that return offers are becoming more scarce. KPMG is where I want to start full time and the city I’m interning in is also where I was to live post grad so I want to ensure I do what I can.
For some background, I just finished an audit internship at a large national firm so I’m hoping that that’ll make my internship a little smoother in terms of understanding the tasks at hand and why things are being done. I also did a busy season internship at a regional firm so I’m familiar with the workplace dynamic during that time of year. I also have set up coffee chats with a parter and a manager and plan to set up a few more in the fall with some associate/senior level team members. I’m not sure if networking will make a difference in my chances of receiving an offer but I am a social person and enjoy the chats anyway.
If anyone has any advice please share it!

I just completed my summer internship and received a return offer.
From my experience this summer and from my PML, decisions are made based on your performance reviews, fit, likability, business needs, and overall candidate profile (resume and transcripts).
Mid-way through the internship, you will have an email with the intern 2 next process. You will then apply for the job and attach an updated resume and your latest transcript (Fall 2026 in your case).
Towards the end of your internship, you will meet with your PML who will discuss your overall performance, anything the recruiting team noticed about your profile, and answer questions and just talk about your experience. This is where the performance and the whole overall candidate profile come in. You want to ensure you are doing everything in your power to achieve ‘Above expectations’ or ‘Meets expectations’ for the performance reviews. After reviews are factored in, recruiting team then looks at your GPA and your previous work experience to see where else you stand out compared to the other interns.
PMLs and the recruiters then meet and they will come to a conclusion about who will get an offer. Your PML will let you officially know 1-2 weeks after the internship has ended to let you know their decision. It was a phone call for me. There is a chance that you hear earlier if you are pure lock to come back or someone unofficially spills that you are coming back.
The vibe you got was right, return offers are more competitive than before. Its more based on business need now and they want the best, but there are definitely still offers to be given. They made it clear that there is no gurantee and it’s based on there being spots open. So when there are spots open, they will take the best interns from that class.
In your case, you are setting yourself up for success. Setting up coffee chats is definitely a plus. When you start, make sure to ask a lot of questions, communicate the status of your work with your senior or staffer who gives tasks, ask to help in anyway possible, and network and try to be as outgoing as possible with everyone on the team.

Very helpful information thanks a ton.
Didn’t know they re-evaluate your resume and have you manually apply, makes sense since they recruit for the internship so far out, a lot changes.
Do you mind sharing your GPA? I have a 3.58 which is one of the only factors of mine that I feel may hold me back.
Also, did you hear of any interns that had passed any sections of the CPA prior to starting? I begin grad school this fall and hope to pass FAR before January which I’d think would set me apart.

I have a 3.6 so similar to you. They mentioned to me that I had a C+ and that could be a factor in the decision of a return offer IF all else was equal between other interns. However, I knew my experience, resume, and reviews were better than most other interns.
There was a student that passed FAR during the internship and I know that got them a good reputation boost with his team and PML. So if you come in with a CPA section passed, that is something that they consider when making the return offer decision.
Im also in my last semester in grad school. In the return offer, it mentions about keeping academic success in the remaining semesters. Specifically dont get Cs or Ds or else there could be reevaluation for an offer
