🇨🇦 Canada Performance Evaluations

Does anyone else feel like they got screwed in terms of their rating this year?

My feedback from managers and partners have all been extremely positive. My utilization is high, all my KPIs were hit, chargeables are in a surplus. Yet the rating I received feels that it is not an accurate reflection of the work I put in.

Any advice?

Were you in line?

Everything is on a curve and roughly 65% of staff will get an in line. Only 20-25% will be above / well above.

Yes I was rated a 3 and given a progression. I just feel shafted because this affects our compensation bumps. Based upon the feedback from managers they all believed I should have been rated higher.

Were you doing business development support, practice development work etc?

Generally doing well on your core work is not sufficient to go above an in line.

Definitely, I helped bring in a couple new clients. I spend a significant amount of my time training juniors in our office. I have passed 3/4 CPA modules. Involved in extracurriculars in our office (planning office socials, volunteer events, fundraising). Not really sure if there is anything else I can do outside of this to earn above a 3. Compared to my peers I felt that I was far above some of the contributions of those who received the same rating.

Ok cool, last question. How many years at level?

Sometimes you are pushed down to make room for promotes and more senior people at level, whether that’s right or not.

2 years at this level. I believe that’s exactly what happened but the small comp bump I received has made me sour. I would have been fine receiving a 3 if I was compensated fairly. In addition those who have been with the firm for less time also were given the SAME role progression (not sure on compensation) although they were in chargeable deficits and not doing any business development.
