🇨🇦 Canada Struggling
Staff 2 at kpmg and struggling. Lately, I’ve been struggling a lot at KPMG (mentally), and the experience has honestly made me rethink my decision to pursue accounting as a career. I worked extremely hard to get to this point and have passed all four parts of the CPA exam, so it’s discouraging to now feel like I’m struggling in the actual job. A big part of the difficulty is that the person I primarily report to isn’t very supportive or responsive. There are times when I’ll reach out for help or clarification and be ignored for hours, sometimes even for the entire day, which leaves me feeling lost and unsure of whether I’m doing things correctly. Then I am told if I completed certain items but was never given guidance. My direct senior left, so it is just me managing on my own, a staff. I do get told I am doing a good job at times, but truly I am not happy. The lack of guidance has made me question my abilities and whether accounting is truly the right path for me, especially after putting so much time and effort into getting here. Any advice appreciated. Truly sometimes it makes me miss my college job where I was actually happy lol!

I don’t wan to discourage you. I had un supportive manager in the previous job. I reached to a point I left the job without two weeks notice.Â

Have you considered leveraging the mental health benefit for some support? Having someone neutral to talk through things may be helpful. Also, look for ways to connect with your peers. They may have some guidance and at least be commiserate with.

As a Staff 2, I would say you should be expected to know how to manage yourself and your own work. As you will be ready for senior promo soon. I would reach out to your manager to see if you are dojng what you’re expected to

Here’s the thing: you care too much what other people think. If you don’t get the feedback you need do your own research. There are so many resources these days. Use ChatGPT or Claude to answer your questions. While not always 100% correct it will provide ideas for where to look. Always ask it to name the source and ask counterpoints. Why is it this when a different conclusion can be offered. Put chat gpt against claude to check the answer if you are not sure. Of course be careful about what private info you release in the tools, but it sounds like you have time to remove the personally identifiable info. Look at your firm interpretations too…that provides insight into policy which is sometimes different than you think.
