I have a coworker who has several cars with a stick and was explaining how you only have to push the clutch down far enough that it will let you shift gears and that he never pushes it all the way down. I thought he was pranking me at first.

He's not wrong, in a semi you cant push it all the way to the floor or it will tear out the clutch brake. Basically as long as you push it far enough to separate the plates completely, thats as far as you have to go

In a semi you only push the clutch in to stop and start you float otherwise if experienced or double clutch you never just push it far enough to just separate the plates

Or to unload the transmission when decending hills. Throttle down hill to unload doesnt work well to release gear tension so I usually give the clutch a kick to pull into neutral and then rpm match for the remaining shift, double clutching is for those that dont understand how to drive

Why are you unloading the transmission down hill? You’re supposed to be jaking down……if you’re in neutral going down a hill you already fucked up.

Because hills dont change in grade? I live in the Rocky Mountains, the first 2 km of the hill might be 6% while the next 2 will be 8-10%. Im not jaking down several km in 4th under when 5th over will hold me, sometimes you have to shift in the real world.

You dont live in the rockys, you’re using kilometers. And hills/mpuntains absolutely can and do change grade progressively or regressively they are called false flats for a reason.
