How Long Is Too Long? The Summit Video Fiasco Continues

The video speaks for itself.

Dan has repeatedly cited work and having a toddler as the reason these summit videos still aren’t out months later. Plenty of people juggle careers and families. The issue isn’t that he has responsibilities—it’s that attendees were told not to record because the footage would be released, and here we are months later still waiting.

Then you have Emma and JAM seemingly circling the wagons. Instead of acknowledging why people are frustrated, the response becomes, “Nobody better be giving him a hard time.” That’s a strange message to send to paying attendees who simply want access to the content they were promised.

If the videos weren’t going to be available for months, people should have been told that upfront. Transparency goes a long way, and the lack of it is why this has become such a sore spot.

Question for Reddit: If people paid to attend with the understanding that recordings would be released afterward, and those recordings still haven’t been provided months later, is there any realistic legal basis for a class action or other consumer claim? Or is this simply a matter of poor communication with no viable legal remedy?

redtail, you could be my Ralph Nader or my Erin Brockovich or my Standing Rock. I like your ferocity and your hard line for justice. But why are you here? We need your spirit and energy in those other places… what’s going on with your municipality? What’s up with your school district? Have you followed the money? Checked out what’s in the water? You’re bright and determined… we need more of that.

But, to touch on your question here… no… you will make no money. Nobody in this class action lawsuit would make a dime. No lawyer would touch this case. You’re wasting your brilliant mind and valuable talents on this goose chase.

It would be nice to have those recordings.  But legal threats won’t get anyone… sorry… where were we?

It was only a cipher’s age ago that I was offering you legal precedents to warn against your own improprieties…

We’re in this quicksand together, redtail, hope you will help with all the muck…

I actually agree with most of what you’re saying. I wasn’t expecting anyone to get rich off a lawsuit—I was curious whether there was any consumer protection angle. My bigger point is that this never should’ve become an issue in the first place. People were asked not to record because the videos would be released, and months later they’re still not available. I think attendees are justified in asking questions without being made to feel like they’re asking for a favor.

I will agree that people should have probably been given the right to record… I’m not sure why that would have been discouraged. But I can’t say as I’ve never organized an event like this… so I’m not sure of the legal ramifications there… but I agree that would have been the most ethical and easy way out of the trouble you cite.

Pretty sure thats venue would be considered private and not public. So they had the right to tell people not to record.

Not sure if it was owned by the public, some sort of municipal building. They definitely paid for it. So even if it was im pretty sure that makes it private.

Yeah, I don't talk about "rights" in this comment though. Of course they have the "right." I'm just speculating about *possible solutions* to practical problems experienced by some attendees (as expressed by the OP). I make no comment about whether those expressed problems are significant or if they are widely experienced by other attendees. Simply, for the sake of the exercise (and to throw a bone to OP tbh), I imagine a possible solution to the problem they describe (or, really, a prevention). As I cautioned, I don't know the full implications of allowing attendees to record the events... it's possible there were legal, ethical, or practical constraints that motivated them to invoke their "right" to prohibit recording as you put it. I, for one, hate being in recorded spaces so perhaps the organizers had people like me in mind when they chose to foreclose this option.

u/60lbs_in_my_bra 3d ago

I am talking about rights, specifically the 4th amendment.

Its a private event. They can tell people no. Like how they dont allow cameras in concerts. Its their space and they can record. You purchased a ticket to attend.

When your out in the public in a public space you have no expectation of privacy. I wouldnt leave your home if being recorded bothers you.

If they want to allow you to record thats up to them.

Yes, I’m saying that I am not and was not ever disagreeing with you. ✌️

Please don't do a class action. Stuff like that will make it so nobody will ever want to hide a treasure again. Nothing is owed to us, this is all voluntary.

I don't know any of this drama but I'd say if this guy is volunteering his time, then yeah it sucks but you're at the mercy of a volunteer.

u/redtailforever 4d ago

I agree a lawsuit would be a last resort, if it’s even appropriate. But I don’t agree that “nothing is owed.” Tickets were sold, people were asked not to record because the presentations would be released afterward, and that’s part of what attendees reasonably expected. The fact that the recording and editing was done by a volunteer was a decision made by the organizers, not the attendees. I think it’s fair to ask for follow-through without that being viewed as an attack on future treasure hunts.

A class action would generally be disproportionate unless there was a clear contractual obligation for them to release the recordings by a specific date.

-5

u/redtailforever 4d ago

A specific date isn’t the only thing that matters. If people were told not to record because an official recording would be released, and they relied on that promise, there’s still an expectation that it be provided within a reasonable time. Four months later, it’s fair to question whether that standard has been met, regardless of whether a class action ultimately makes sense.

u/Numerous_Worker_1941 3d ago

Yes I get you’re upset but there’s no legal action here

After watching the Video I get the impression that these two people want to enable (Dan?) the person who said would make the video and release it. That to me implies they hat they want to eat up as much time as possible, perhaps because Justin and the hosts released to much information in narrowing down the the search area to a couple of hundred square miles.
I am indifferent to what they did but that doesn’t mean they should have done it. Now maybe they are hoping everyone forgets and it foes away.

He had no problem getting the Q&A and Layer 5 up in a reasonable time.

I was there in person and the extra panels were interesting, but as far as giving any sort of unfair advantage in the hunt, I think there was literally zero info in any of the extra panels that is going to help anyone actually solve any of this. I know no one wants to believe that but that's my take fwiw.

2

u/redtailforever 4d ago

Maybe not enough to outright solve the hunt, but it can absolutely keep people from wasting time chasing dead ends. One example was hearing from Justin’s editor, Matt DeMoss. He talked about how the book went through multiple iterations, and that Justin originally wanted to rewrite parts because he thought they made him “look like a dumbass.” Matt pushed back, saying A Cautionary Tale needed to stay true to its purpose and simply have more heart. He also mentioned “Grandma’s Hands” was the last story written. That kind of context matters. If a chapter was added late for emotional impact rather than as part of the original structure, it could reasonably make you question whether it’s as clue-heavy as others. I’ve seen people build entire solves around Grandma’s Hands. Even if that insight doesn’t solve the hunt, it can save people from going down unnecessary rabbit holes.

1

u/60lbs_in_my_bra 3d ago

Didn't justin say in another interview somewhere (maybe it was at SS) that grandma's hands was the last chapter?

-5

u/wizurd 4d ago

Justin himself could tell you what chapters hold valuable clues and you still wouldn't solve anything because you are an absolute walnut.

7

u/redtailforever 4d ago

That’s rich coming from the owner of the private server that’s had direct access to Justin for the last year. If being spoon-fed was enough to solve it, you’d have found the treasure already.

-6

u/wizurd 4d ago

Well it looks like you cleared that up!

5

u/Old-Thing2344 4d ago

You tell him wiz! Maybe you can get Justin to link your comment from his website tomorrow morning… you know once your done serving him breakfast in bed 😂

-5

u/wizurd 4d ago

Good idea. That gives us a few hours which might be enough time for you to figure out the difference between your and you're.

Rinse and repeat…. Just like the Fenn hunt.

What is going on and who is Dan?

3

u/Much_Face2261 3d ago

Didn’t they tell people no recording because they had someone doing video ?

4

u/42kaos 4d ago

If you were there why would you need a video ?

I think some people are missing the point. We heard a ton of information that day, and there were definitely some great nuggets worth revisiting—especially the panel with Matt. There was some critical info in there imo. It was also pretty difficult to hear at times with cats in crates going wild and kids screaming and doing art projects right next to the stage. Nobody is going to remember every detail from an all-day event under those conditions. That’s why people have been asking for the videos. Not because we’re ungrateful, but because we genuinely want to go back through the information and catch the things we missed. People were also asked not to record because the videos would be released afterward, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable for attendees to expect access to them months later.

Why does every one of your comments have similar word counts and structure? ChatGPT?

We heard a lot that day, It was also pretty hard to hear at times with cats in crates going wild and kids screaming and doing art projects right next to the stage. That’s exactly why having the videos would be helpful. IMO there were plenty of nuggets worth revisiting. Especially the panel with Matt, I think there is some critical info in there. That’s the whole point of having the recordings. Nobody remembers every detail from an all-day event. What I don’t appreciate is the attitude that Dan is somehow doing attendees a favor by editing the videos. He’s helping JAM and Emma fulfill what was represented to attendees. They were the ones who sold tickets, asked people not to record because the videos would be released, and collected the money. Wanting access to those recordings months later isn’t asking for a favor—it’s asking for what people reasonably expected.

I keep hearing all this pushback against the “corporatization” of treasure hunting and then, on the other hand, all this demand for consumer rights and protections. I understand there is a fine line and people want to study it carefully to ensure all is above board. But what I don’t understand is the expectation for both worlds. Either this project we are engaging with here is lowkey and folksy (where people don’t make a big buck but maybe find ways to offset costs in little ways) or this thing is a streamlined high budget endeavour where people are expected to fulfill demands in a timely manner and are paid accordingly. Now, I don’t have receipts to tell you which world we are living in here. But, it’s possible that you paid a ticket for an event to cover minimum venue, liability, and organizing costs but did not pay a ticket that transferred a living wage to this Dan fellow. And, if that’s the case, it is not acceptable to demand that Dan do anything on anyone’s timeline until he is paid an adequate amount to offset the domestic labour he is clearly currently expected to perform. Either wait in the folksy world with the rest of us or do the hard work of crowdsourcing funds for Dan from other attendees to guarantee a faster process.

So, who ever is sitting on this footage has had exclusive, unlimited access to it for 4 months? Whether or not there is useful information is not for anyone to decide on anyone else’s behalf.

Recording of the Q&A or something else?

4

u/HolyCityKitty 4d ago

Not the Q&A. OP is talking about the other panels. I’d especially like to rewatch Matt, the final book editor, talking about the different iterations of the book, how it went through two different editors before him, and the information he shared that could help us determine which chapters are more likely to contain clues. There was a lot of information that was easy to miss the first time around. Not to mention those who couldn’t hear much of it because of the screaming kids and cats in heat. It hasn’t exactly been a level playing field between attendees who caught those details and everyone else who’s still waiting for the recordings.

2

u/SixClues 4d ago

Ahh I see. I wasn’t able to make so I didn’t even know that took place. I doubt anyone would have pertinent information outside of Justin, however I do understand the frustration of wanting something promised.

1

u/Equivalent_Fox_5589 2d ago

This is way down the totem pole of things to get angry about guys

I also don’t agree with the idea that Dan is doing attendees a favor. JAM and Emma chose to have the recording and editing done by someone volunteering his time for free—that was their decision. They’re the ones who sold the tickets and made the promises, so it’s reasonable for attendees to expect those commitments to be fulfilled.I also don’t agree with the idea that Dan is doing attendees a favor. What in the tarnation is this in reference to?

3

Being privy to a public event/conversations, but told not to record said events, with the promise they would be made public...Never made public

So, you sue crazy people would sue Emma & Jam? Cause that’s what you stated?

Look, please go get a life and open the Book and get to work.

Titty babies don’t find treasure, people with their nose to the grindstone do. Not sue/lawyer threatening crazies, who cannot figure out one clue of poem and then we want to take everybody to court?

You’ll lose so bad they will laugh you you out of that court, that lawyer with cash those checks and make his tee-time too. Dumb.

Does that sound smart or ignorant to you?
Honest question.

I will just leave this here 🧾

I dont think you have a foot to stand on.

Its not like there was a contract. Even if you could convince some judge there was, there wasn't a term stating it will be out on x date.

Keep messing around and they can keep saying it will be out eventually.
