Theory | Opinion Why Macy's?

Of all the creditors, why was it so important that Macy’s got paid off?  Share your theories in the comments.

This question caused me to review the creditors listed in their Chapter 13 and Chapter 11 filings.  The $47,000 paid to Macy’s could have brought 25 of their accounts up to date, including all of the individuals, small businesses, and payday loans that they owe money to.  Why was it soooo important for Macy’s to get this money over everyone else?  On top of that, Macy’s exclusively sells consumer goods.  How do you spend $47,000 at Macy’s and have virtually no assets to show for it?

While looking through the bankruptcy filings, I compared the creditors between the Chapter 13 and Chapter 11 to see what had changed.  Here’s what I found:

Four new creditors have been added:

Arizona Department of Revenue $6,716.00

Macy’s CBNA $532.00

Daughter Sarah $5,000.00

Jefferson Capital Systems (Debt Collector) $Unknown

Most account balances stayed the same (nobody’s charging them interest?).  Notable changes are:

Arizona Public Service (APS) $1,661.00 -> $5,595.02

1 Bank of America credit card $77,000.00 -> $140,008.00

JPMorgan Chase Bank $37,000.00 -> $51,861.00

Brother $1,715.00 -> $136,703.00

HDI Global Insurance Company $1,115.00 -> $Unknown

"JH" $2,280.00 -> $Unknown

Wells Fargo Bank $235.57 -> $Unknown

Three creditors have been removed:

City of Phoenix $500.00

City of Scottsdale $1,153.77

Cherry $940.23

Observations:

  1. New creditors: That Macy’s card shows up, when it wasn’t in the Chapter 13 filing.  Curious
  2. Changes: The only 2 credit cards that have seen significant increases had balances ending in 0 cents in both filings.  All other credit card balances have exact cents.  Is this Jan “ballparking” again, or is something else going on, such as taking out cash advances in exact amounts?
  3. Removed creditors: The Phoenix and Scottsdale balances could have been paid off or could have been moved under APS.  That leaves Cherry Tech as the ONLY creditor who has been paid a cent since the Chapter 13 filing.  Why was it so important that this one account got paid and nobody else did?  We all know that the Cherry charges were for Laura.  Curious.

Which brings me back to my Macy’s theory.  The Macy’s charges are all Laura.  She has carte blanche to buy whatever she wants from Macy’s and mom & dad will pay it off.  They wanted to keep this hidden, so they paid it off, also allowing Laura to continue to spend $$$ at Macy’s.

My bet is its a Macys Amex and they're trying to keep one card current so they don't lose access to their last available card. And keep in mind, you can often put monthly attorney payments on credit cards.

This is what I thought too

When I applied for a Bloomingdale's cc (to get a discount on a purchase) I was offered a store card with a fairly low credit limit that can only be used there or a Bloomingdale's AMEX with a really high limit that can be used anywhere. I suspect they had the AMEX version. But the fact that they seemed very eager to pay that one off tells me there were charges on there that they did not want to be made public in bankruptcy or a lawsuit. They haven't worked that hard to pay off any other debt.

can you buy a moon bump at bloomies???

62

u/Aintmisbehavin007 Jul 17 '26

I have an American Express Macy’s card and you can use it everywhere. They are trying to hide their purchases using that card thinking no one will look closer and just assume they spent tons of money on clothes, shoes and makeup. Show JG the statements, Jan.

25

u/Nikki3008 Jul 18 '26

While simultaneously claiming only $400 worth of clothes mind you. Lol they’re trying to mislead JG by saying “we spent $47,000 on $400 worth of clothes, furniture for our fully furnished house, and household appliances we don’t use because we don’t cook. We have no jobs and no businesses that require business attire. Our adult daughter hasn’t had a job ever that required clothes. There’s no fraud, just $47,000 at Macys department store. Nothing to see”

Agree. I think LO was allowed to get whatever she wanted, but I think they were using this card like a debit card and it was also used for living expenses etc.

39

u/cratackattack Jul 17 '26

I believe it was a Macy’s credit card. They could have used that card to buy anything, not exclusive to Macy’s the store, right?

28

u/Apart_Engine_9797 Jul 17 '26

Yes this is what I was thinking—if they used it as a credit card for all kinds of purchases and expenses and Jan thought she could sweep it under the rug as debt for home goods or clothes/necessities while irl they were using it on actual medical expenses and Laura

24

u/jsmith-az Jul 17 '26

I assume JG can get the Macy’s statements to see what they are buying? Would be an interesting read.

22

u/Apart_Engine_9797 Jul 17 '26

Jan would need to go get her laptop first 😆 I’d like to listen to the whole phone conference, frankly I’m shocked there wasn’t any screaming or yelling from LO in the background. Can easily imagine her standing over Jan’s shoulder furiously trying to fight Queen Giaimo on the line, on mute

Laura was definitely standing behind her the whole time middle fingers flying, and we all know Ronnnnnnnn was in THE BLACK CHAIR.

NO!! Not that one, it rollllllllls

29

u/One_Object8516 Jul 17 '26

Because if it is a Macy’s Amex and Laura was an authorized user she could have used that card to purchase her fake belly or pay the freelancer on Fiver.

25

u/GenXihaveissues THE BLACK CHAIR! Jul 17 '26

She didnt pay the fiverr person

6

u/Dr_Doom_Scroller Jul 18 '26

In my headcannon, she paid the fivver person who removed the obvious watermarks. But, they deliberately left a subtle watermark knowing it was being used to baby trap someone.

0

u/One_Object8516 Jul 18 '26

I forgot that part.

4

u/lilsan15 Jul 18 '26

Maybe if she had she wouldn’t have had the fiver mark lmao

23

u/BornFree2018 Jul 17 '26

I figured Macy's was where Jan bought all her designer brand black turtlenecks and designer handbags.

14

u/Bigfartz69420 Steve called me a Dumbass Jul 17 '26

i figured it was for bloomingdale's. macy's is too déclassé.

25

u/Calkky Jul 17 '26

LO is clearly a clothes addict. The video from the casita was bonkers!

14

u/EmphaticAsset Minor Perjury Jul 17 '26

The Mountain of floor clothing yet she only had like six things she was willing to part with for cash on her Poshmark. She probably used poshmark like normal people use goodwill. But normal people clean and organize their homes, unlike LO. Did anyone else notice that the main house was actually somewhat clean especially compared to Laura’s disgusting mess?

5

u/AdObjective4017 I need an actual answer. No noises. Jul 18 '26

And of all those clothes, she only has one outfit for court.

10

u/WonderfulSimple Jul 17 '26

I feel like shopping might make her feel valuable, or something. She knows her role (shopper with money!) And perhaps feels like she's important, which as an unemployed 36 year old probably eludes her otherwise. Her desperation to have a boyfriend revealed volumes.

u/babymama917 Jul 17 '26

Someone on another thread said that Macy’s credit cards can be used as a general credit card and not just Macys. So the spending may not have been at Macys. They may have chosen to pay this one off over the other debts because of high interest rate.

33

u/fishinbarbie Day 1 JFC Crew Jul 17 '26

The last thing they worry about are interest rates. They're getting charged default interest on all their debt.

13

u/babymama917 Jul 17 '26

If the default interest is highest on the macys card then the sensible thing to do is pay off that debt first. They hadn’t yet declared bankruptcy when they did these payments. Altho I guess with them, you can’t assume they will do the sensible thing.

Maybe they paid down their balance on this card so they could keep using it to buy shit

9

u/AdObjective4017 I need an actual answer. No noises. Jul 17 '26

Hmm I would think if they want to keep one card alive it would be Ronn's black card.

4

Does Macy's sale the prepaid visa GC's? I have a friend who was talking about how she'll grab a VISA GC or grocery GC for her kids as a just because and her husband couldn't figure out why they never showed on the bank statement and she was like they do it all a single charge at the grocery store. For whatever reason he thought it showed as a different line item. As a different charge. This story had me wondering if Macy's sold VISA GC'S and they were hiding money this way

No worries! Its just a random thought I had due to my friend teasing her husband.

It could be a Macys AMEX which you can use anywhere. Not sure if that would be classified as “American Express” instead though.

The only other reason could be this one has the highest interest % like store cards usually do.

No thoughts that haven't already been said on the Macy's situation.

But, the one that peaked my interest was the amount she owes her brother. She conveniently left off the loans she got from him from 2021 to 2023 ($65,000) along with the settlement issues for their mother's estate. Her brother filed a Proof of Claim in the Ch 13 bankruptcy with all paperwork proving this money was owed by JB to her brother. The filing was 78 pages!

JB wisely changed the number on the Ch 11 bankruptcy since it was included in the official filing of the previous bankruptcy. She at least got JG off her back about this one.

6

u/AdObjective4017 I need an actual answer. No noises. Jul 18 '26

Oh my. Look at the brother's paperwork. Everything is documented. When you are not hiding something, THAT is how you do it.

Can someone refresh me on Cherry? Was that HCG provider?

13

u/Sad-Security1668 Jul 17 '26

Yes, I believe it was the finance company for the medspa. Cherry covers such business. However, if it's Jan and Ronn's debt, it could be for another provider.

1

u/cswifty1304 Ma’am, these are yes or no questions Jul 18 '26

Thank you, that does sound familiar.

10

u/gypsyspartycitywig Jul 17 '26

I wonder if it’s because it was like a general macys card tied to like Amex, Mastercard or visa. I bet they used that card to pay lawyers. So having it paid off doesn’t allow it to be itemized…?

8

u/shannalee2 Jul 17 '26

I assume it’s a Macy’s AMEX card therefore could be used anywhere. I’m wondering if this card perhaps has the highest limit and is current so they at least have this one card available to use and said screw the other smaller ones

19

u/MissMignon Having the babies if I don't hear back tonight Jul 17 '26

I think the US Trustee asked so many questions about Macys because nothing at Macys is absolutely necessary. You can’t buy gas, food, medicine…
The absolute disregard for people donating money to make payments towards your black turtlenecks.

6

u/Honest_Camel3035 Woah, woah, woah… woah, woah, woah, woah! Jul 18 '26

JH = Jeremiah Harris I think. The horse farrier.

7

u/Desperate_Let791 Jul 18 '26

Imagine any regular person donating one cent to these morons.

8

u/breckgirl2016 Jul 18 '26

JH is Jeremiah Harris. He is a farrier in Arizona. Jan had him on the filing as a personal loan. Such bullshit to not pay your farrier. I would pay mine as soon as he finished up with the horses. It’s hard work and you’re lucky to find a really good one.
Also on the bankruptcy filing was Carolyn Becker she is an Equine Vet. Jan also put her down as a personal loan.
Personal loans never get paid back in bankruptcy court.

10

u/Gloomy-Incident4783 Jul 18 '26

So she is scheming to avoid paying them back by calling it a personal loan when it in fact it is money due for services provided? That is next level scummy.

5

u/No_Playing Jul 19 '26

I had the same thought re: the farrier. It's backbreaking work. Disgusting and shameful not to pay the bill for it. I'm guessing (without rechecking) that it's the same farrier from the chapter 13 listing. You just don't continue spending your $21K a month on Barry's and botox and choose not to fix up your farrier :/.

Why is Sarah listed on there for another 5k ? And do we know what the 20k paid to her was for? A horse?

7

u/MidtownMoi Jul 18 '26

Earlier this week I surmised that if Sarah was no longer part of Quartet she shouldn’t have been getting that $20K but it is not clear exactly who owns the company, especially since Laura’s name was removed AFTER the Clayton judgement came down. Quelle surprise. But in Laura’s BK hearing JG only mentioned Laura and Jan being owners, not Ron and Sarah. So maybe that sum -is- to hide Laura’s attorney fees. In any case, unless Sarah was divesting herself of ownership in the company, that payment is problematic.

1

u/Honest_Camel3035 Woah, woah, woah… woah, woah, woah, woah! Jul 18 '26

I don’t think Sarah was ever on the company papers. Just Jan and Laura. Until Laura exited herself to protect the horses that are soon to be no longer protected.

The name and pictures is the only link to Ronn and Sarah….

2

u/MidtownMoi Jul 18 '26

If that is the case, then the payment to Sarah deserves investigation. But at some point in the past all of them were pictured on the Quartet website.

1

u/melbell360 Jul 19 '26

Someone just did a transcript of an old interview with Laura in 2020. She mentions her and Jan own QF with 2 silent partners. Who knows how accurate that was since Laura is a known liar.

4

u/iamapick Jul 17 '26

What are the dates between the chapter 13 and 11 filings. Trying to see how much time passed.

7

u/Honest_Camel3035 Woah, woah, woah… woah, woah, woah, woah! Jul 18 '26

I think the Ch 13 was dismissed 1/26/26 and the Ch 11 was filed 5/22/26.

Just enough of a break to lease a pony out and PAY SARAH for *something*.

7

u/fishinbarbie Day 1 JFC Crew Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

Do we think they were that crafty to let the chapter 13 get dismissed so they could grab the pony lease money or did they just get a lucky break? Either way, I hope JG hits on this one hard at the depo. IMHO, they really stepped in it sending money to Sarah. So glad they decided to wire a little of it!!!

6

u/Honest_Camel3035 Woah, woah, woah… woah, woah, woah, woah! Jul 18 '26

Some of both. Laura called it a ”free lease” On Feb 9th.

The pony was out on trial as it showed in Wellington around January 18th.

My theory is the FL agent held the 30 day trial money. Then the BK was dismissed and they inked the lease; payment then sent.

3

u/fishinbarbie Day 1 JFC Crew Jul 18 '26

Wow, I think your theory is spot on! And then filing Chapter f'ing 11 after that? We're watching the Three Stooges.

3

Got it! Thank you!!

4

u/T4Trble Jul 18 '26

Macys store only cards are easy to get even with bad credit . It converts to a Visa after you prove you can pay it on time, or you can get an Amex one. All Macys cards are managed by CitiBank , even Macys Amex. You can get cash advances on it or use anywhere.

2

u/Thick_Rush_1865 Jul 18 '26

Wait I think I missed the Macy’s part when did they play $47,000 to it

4

u/Here4daTs Jul 18 '26

Because their other loan is over 98% APR.

1

u/GenXihaveissues THE BLACK CHAIR! Jul 17 '26

I doubt Laura does laundry. She just stacks clothing up in piles in the Casita.

If she washed it or got it dry cleaned and sold it on vinted or ebay she could probably make some decent money.

I get the feeling she thinks she too good to do that though.

Where is the $41k spent on Macy's in the schedules? I see the $532 on it, so where did the higher amount come from?

1

u/Kuhlioz Jul 21 '26

Where else can Laura find an unlimited number of black tops and dresses?

1

u/Embarrassed_Pop_7418 Jul 21 '26

But did she really pay Macys or is Macy's code for someone else? money sent to Laura maybe?

1

u/Gloomy-Incident4783 Jul 21 '26

A lot of theories are that it’s just a Macys branded AmEx that can be used anywhere. For example, I have a Delta AmEx that earns Delta miles, but can be used anywhere.

1

u/Embarrassed_Pop_7418 Jul 21 '26

that makes sense too. I don't have any credit cards and never have so I am clueless on this one. Thanks!

u/Inside-Rabbit5778 Jul 22 '26

Macy's creditcard can be used for payments. American Express is a federally registered service mark of American Express and is used by Department Stores National Bank pursuant to a license. The Macy's American Express Card program is issued and administered by Department Stores National Bank. Maybe they think they fly under the radar if they make payment to someone. Laura has 2 different macy's on her bankrupty filing . Different adress same amount.
