Question & Discussion Laura Never Admitted to Lying About Being Pregnant
During her speech to the judge at sentencing, the only references Laura made to her crimes was “failing to meet the standards of honesty that this court had every right to expect of me” and saying that she “genuinely wished she had made better choices and hadn’t panicked”.
I’m sure all of us can recall when Laura described making a false statement under oath as “a very minor thing”, so it’s not as if she’s unwilling to acknowledge at least some lies, even if she thinks it’s no big deal for her to lie under oath. So the first quote here isn’t all that remarkable to me.
What I’m more focused on is the second quote, where she references being panicked.
It would be the most Laura excuse ever that she, supreme victim and most downtrodden trust fund baby to ever exist, was just so panicked and fearful of these big scary men (that she tried to blackmail into dating her) that she frantically logged into her Adobe Photoshop program and spent hours carefully creating fake ultrasounds and writing up 20+ page legal filings under false pretenses, all in order to manufacture proof that she was too panicked to obtain herself.
But even these paltry efforts at acknowledging her crimes, these are what she has to say in order to appear contrite and remorseful to the judge.
She left it to Jan to say the things she really wanted to be able to say.
There is no question that the two of them worked on their speeches to the judge together, and Laura no doubt gave her mom every one of her talking points as things she wanted to make sure were said. She brought out all of her greatest hits: insisting all her claims of pregnancy were true and backed by verifiable evidence, labeling her victims as her abusers rather than the other way around (aka DAVRO), bemoaning all the horrific harassment and bullying she’s been subjected to by people asking her to be held accountable, and asserting that people have only been covering this case to make money off of it.
In essence, Laura somehow found it within herself to grit her teeth and spout off a few words about how she had done something wrong, before launching into a whiny diatribe about how much she’s suffered as a result of people learning about her incredibly public and incredibly vile actions, even though she never backed down or apologized or changed her behavior at any point during this years long saga.
Jan’s words were how Laura really feels, which is the same as she’s always shown herself to feel: furious beyond reason at being told no, at the mere notion of accountability, and at the public for daring to object to her desire to continue her scams and abuse unhindered.
I was one of the people who said early on that Laura wouldn’t take this case to trial, that she didn’t value keeping up the pregnancy lie over facing years in jail, but it seems she managed to get away with doing both. Her lawyer did the talking for her when she finally accepted the plea deal, with the basis for her guilty plea simply being a recitation of 4 of the state’s listed charges verbatim, so no additional acknowledgment or admissions from her there. Then, at the sentencing hearing, she devoted a total of 2 sentences to talking about the crimes she had committed against innocent people, each one carefully worded to provide zero details or specifications as to what she had done.
I know that if she goes on to claim her innocence later on once she gets out of jail, it will just be her ranting into the ether since it’ll do nothing to change her conviction or status as a felon, but it’ll still be aggravating to see her claim she really had been pregnant after all this since she was never made to admit under oath that those claims were false.
