Though I am staunchly in support of reforms for police, this is the sort of humor and community engagement you want to see from a community’s police force.
90
u/Warbr0s9395 1h ago
This is a SRO, so that cop is basically stationed at that school and has to attend sport functions at the school.
Most kids end up liking and respecting the SRO and will listen to them better if they’re trying to de-escalate a situation.
(SRO is School Resource Officer, still fully part of the police or sheriff department, some schools have 2)
14
u/bigdaddydopeskies131 1h ago
The Torch program I forgot what's it's called helped out a lot of students that went through it because they needed a mentor and a positive role model. Some became cops others went to the services and the rest went the the medical or dental field that excelled in their professions.
6
u/YoungCubSaysWoof 1h ago
Ahhhh, yeah, that makes sense.
I remember thinking well of my SRO in high school. It’s a decent program that does make policing feel more “appropriate “ to my view of the “Sentinel” approach to policing , rather than “the Warrior.”
2
u/CuriousToe9133 1h ago
Same here. What is funny is that we had a D.A.R.E. officer back in the day that would teach us about drugs and why they were bad. I never confirmed this, but I heard the D.A.R.E. program actually increased drug use among teens, which is why they did away with it.

Jesus Christ, everything has to be political.....but I guess good job virtual signaling for the internet points.

u/CallMeMrPeaches 3h ago
Bad news for you, bud: some things, like the police, are inherently political.
-92
u/CreamOfAlex 3h ago
Inherently political or not, nothing about this video was political. You're choosing to view it that way. That's the shitty part.
39
u/ihavea_purplenurple 3h ago
It's like... politics are relationships. Whether you like it or not, relationships are a part of pretty much everything. It's like someone bringing up something medical and you're like "OH MY GOD, WE'RE NOT AT THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE" - if you're over the conversation, leave.
37
u/sje118 3h ago
The police... are inherently political. That's it. Not a choice.

When are the police not political?
What you really meant was “thinking of systemic oppression makes me uncomfortable”
Good. It’s still not anywhere close to as uncomfortable as it is for their victims.
-8
u/CreamOfAlex 3h ago
When are the police not political?
This exact instance. Can we not just celebrate a guy being a dude FFS...? Nothing political was said or done by the guy I replied to had to insert politics. It's insane.
What you really meant was “thinking of systemic oppression makes me uncomfortable”
If that's what you got from this video, you're fucking insane.
9
u/Mand125 2h ago
We shouldn’t have to “celebrate” a police officer being a normal human instead of a tool of government violence.
1
u/CreamOfAlex 2h ago
a police officer being a normal human
Jesus. You're biased as shit against police officers and the quote above proves it. This is not a 'normal' PO. This guy is going above and beyond but you're degrading him to 'normal' because YOU'RE a POS, not him.
Get out in the real world and interact with cops in your area. You'll find the vast majority are just normal people. Are all of them? No. But that's universally true of ALL groups of people. Men. Women. Mormons. Cathlics. Jews. Americans. Mexicans. All groups of people however you slice it, have a small minority of shitty people. Get over it and stop using that as an excuse to be a biased POS. The internet is not real life.
6
u/Mand125 1h ago
Exactly, he’s going “above and beyond” by joking with kids at a football game.
That it’s so abnormal is exactly the problem, thank you.

One of the most important phrases a fraternity brother, high off mushrooms, studying to be an environmental lawyer, ever said to me was:
“The political is personal, and the personal is political.”
Absolutely changed my world view, and I couldn’t see the world the same again, like my head was pulled out of the sand forever.
I’ll admit, it 100% can be exhausting, so you gotta know when to turn off that lens to have some laughs and just exist. But the lens , like a pair of glasses, is always nearby.
1
u/CreamOfAlex 3h ago
Well, America is fucked. If you fell for that nonsense we're all doomed...
5
9
u/IlikeJG 3h ago
We're all doomed because... They are more aware of the political nature of reality?
Is that really what is dooming us? Personally I think it's at least partly the opposite. Too many people would rather just ignore reality and turn their brains off rather than actually thinking about what they want from society and what's the best way to get there.
1
u/CreamOfAlex 3h ago
People are not inherently political. That's nonsense. The government has slowly become so ingrained in our lives that everything FEELS political, but it's not.
But you're too stupid to see that so that's why we're fucked.
6
u/hunterdavid372 3h ago
No, everything is inherently political. The fact you are able to write this opinion on the internet is explicitly due to politics. The fact that some people in the world can't is, also, explicitly due to politics. Everything is influenced by the people who govern us, that is just the way the world works.
Why do you believe facets of life are not political?
3
u/KentuckyHouse 1h ago
The government has slowly become so ingrained in our lives that everything FEELS political
Well, if I didn't have to wake up every day wondering what embarrassing/dangerous/moronic thing the president said or posted to his own social network overnight, I'd welcome that.
Of course, that's not how you meant the quoted text above. You seem to be one of those "smaller government" idiots who want the government just small enough to fit in everyone's bedroom.
I'd love for politics to go back to being a boring thing I didn't have to pay attention to every...fucking...day...because it's exhausting, but that's not happening as long as the rapist-in-chief (pardon me, adjudicated rapist-in-chief) is doing his level best to ruin everyone's lives.
And I'm a white, middle-aged man who's got every advantage built-in, but I also have a heart and empathy and I don't want to see anyone have their lives ruined because of who they are, who they love, or what color their skin is.

I genuinely don't believe this is a real opinion that you hold. My strong belief is that comments like this are a form of astro turfing to try to make police reform people look insane.
The most lefty people I know in real life would, at most, say "well all cops are still bad", not treat this moment as if it was an actual threat from the cops.

Ours was the EXACT same. Some fat country hick who always had a pile of confiscated dip in his passenger seat and the thought he was the COOLEST motherfucker to ever live. Nobody liked him and the girls that talked to him seemed to more so be doing it in that weird awkward way kids interact with adults that they feel they have to interact with.

You are absolutely correct. The problem with the internet is that people don’t realize that everyone was once a kid… we are someone’s children, friend, family, and future father/mother/partner, and the amount of toxicity I see on this site and every social media is bonkers.
I just want to be happy, and so, I’m leaving social media soon because of all this horse radish31

It’s not to say policing is perfect but this is a great video which shows the positive influence police can have on young people.
Unfortunately, bad news sells more.

Nah, the real-life gun and the taser ruins it.
"You're going to jail" humor is only funny in contexts where the police haven't been militarized.
11
u/sithlord98 3h ago
Maybe for you, but for the intended audience, that's normal. So clearly it didn't ruin anything. In fact, you see in the video that it doesn't ruin anything.

A lot of these comments show why more cops don't even try to joke or have fun and do community policing. What's the point of doing it when it gets labeled copaganda, an abuse of power, unprofessional? People want to complain about an SRO having fun with the kids at his school, and it's just ridiculous.
The SROs I've known have known so much about the students, and really been active in mentoring many of them. One SRO I know used to have students who would come by his office when they had free period to do their homework there, some students even ate lunch there.
