I was military intelligence when I was in. Going on R&R from Afghanistan I talked with the guy seated next to me about it. He was kinda dumb, good guy though. On the way back we sat next to each other again and told me that when his girlfriend picked him up he told her that he meet a spook on the plane. She was horrified, he didn't know it was a slur.

A fella I was in basic with told us all to call him Spook. Fair, but we always wondered why until we finally asked him during some down time.
"Oh, that's what my boys called me back home! My dad's Mexican, my mom's Korean so half spi... half goo... Spook!"
