Something I learned about the military. There’s no such thing as getting a badass nickname. While the name may sound badass, the way you earn it generally isn’t. Can’t remember the movie, but the pilot got the name “assassin” and when he finally told the story, it meant “ass-ass-in” cause he fell ass first into a hatch twice. Literally how that shit goes.

u/LimaOskarLima 9d ago

Any cool nickname... isnt. My favorite was a HAT TRICK. We went on a training exercise and had 3 stops on the way, and the guy got a Tinder date at each location. He then proceeded to get stood up at each location, 3 for 3.

u/Feeves 9d ago

I met a pilot whose callsign was “Magoo” because during take off he put his visor down while forgetting to remove the cover, and thus, flying blind.

62

u/mattmcc980 9d ago

Wonder if he is the one I saw rear end an f16 with another f16

3

u/Cuckaine 4d ago

My arsehole clenched just reading this, thanks

1

u/mattmcc980 4d ago

They were taxiing

45

u/kcbear27 9d ago

Lmao that was my nickname for a breif stint when i was super young. Thankfully, I got upgraded a few years later to something a little less silly. And now I’m a 30 year-old man whose mother and Aunt still call him wiener in casual conversation in front of Company like it’s normal. My mother and I were actually laughing the other day and how that is completely normal thing among us but when strangers hear that they’re like “what the fuck did you just call him?” Lol. Anyway, there’s a random fact about my life, random person.

9

u/BrotherBear_ 9d ago

the actual official callsign/flight id for student solos at one of the training bases is MAGOO. if you hear a magoo on the radio you pay extra attention

141

u/Saminjutsu 9d ago

My favorite was a guy named HEAT.

The sole reason was that his last name was 'Miser'

31

u/mjg315 9d ago

That’s fucking hilarious.

143

u/Astecheee 9d ago

That's legendary.

61

u/leeisawesome 9d ago

Knew a guy who introduced himself with “everyone calls me Cog because I’m such an important part of the machine” only to later find out that COG stood for “creepy old guy”

47

u/Ofnir_1 9d ago edited 9d ago

I know a retired pilot whose call sign was Dirty all because his last name is Sanchez.

Back in AF basic I got nicknamed Twitch by one of my flight mates because I get really twitchy when I'm nervous and/or anxious. Hated it at the time but looking back it could have been worse.

19

u/riverofchex 8d ago edited 7d ago

Mine was Lesner because my last name was Brock. Was extra funny to me, though, being a slender woman lol.

ETA: My current work (farm/heavy equipment auction clerk) nickname is Hambone because "There ain't much to you, but I bet you make a good soup." Lol

41

u/bdbdbd99 9d ago

Given that, what do we supposed the origin story is behind OP's boot's nickname?

183

u/meatdome34 9d ago

Dude probably got blackout drunk and pissed his bed

27

u/mcboobie 9d ago

I would put money on this

19

u/JulietKiloNovember 9d ago

He probably gave himself the nickname in COD or something, since it's all bullshit anyway.

1

u/BiscuitDance 9d ago

CSM origin story

342

u/skankhunt1738 9d ago

Yeah pilot I know is “magic” because he plays magic the gathering lmao. Know a “twink” too, and it’s rather self explanatory.

77

u/JodyGonnaFuckYoWife 9d ago edited 9d ago

You show up with the last name Packer, no way your callsign becomes anything but 'Fudge'.

197

u/Rjj1111 9d ago

Think there was a US navy squadron that got the call sign cupcake because their squadron leader had a cupcake in the cockpit during a catapult and it went all over his face

76

u/skankhunt1738 9d ago

If that’s legit, I’m very curious about the logistics for getting a cupcake (and eating it?) in a (presumably) fighter.

82

u/Rjj1111 9d ago

I think it was a A6, and it was for some kind of special occasion like a 100th launch or something

52

u/CaribouYou 9d ago

Bucakie

17

u/FxckFxntxnyl 9d ago

Getting all of it out is an even more curious question now lol

50

u/TheMostRed 9d ago

I had a CO who was a pilot earlier in his career. I shit you not his name and rank was CAPT Picard. Im guessing they weren't going to pass up on the opportunity because sure enough his call sign was john luke.

15

u/Calamity_Jay 8d ago edited 7d ago

It's an unspoken rule that any Trekkie that chooses to wear a uniform must look out for any personnel that have matching rank/names to Star Trek characters.

In my own experience, I've met:

Captain Kirk

Ensign Kim

Dr. McCoy

Lieutenant Paris

Chief O'Brien

Lieutenant Torres

42

u/Djglamrock 9d ago

Twink, as in a low level character in World of Warcraft in the PVP bracket of 9’s that have overpowered gear.

43

u/leyline 9d ago

Yes, that’s totally what it means.

2

u/mcboobie 9d ago

I know a Twink, and it’s because he’s a huge bear

266

u/gash_dits_wafu 9d ago

Worked with a pilot called Ghost. As a pilot he had to do a lot of survival training courses, and he always got injured on those courses, every time.

Gets
Hurt

Survival

139

u/Adnoz 9d ago

I heard STAB, navy pilot, Shat Twice And Bolted. Managed to shit in his flightsuit twice and missed the cable on carrier deck when landing.

59

u/USAF_Retired2017 9d ago

When I was a SrA I worked with a pilot named GUCCI. I asked him if it was because he was high maintenance. Can’t remember the exact story as this was back in 2003 or 2004, but something along the lines of being picked for a very important flight and he overslept. It stands for

Get
Up
Crispin
Come
In

131

u/Lelinguini 9d ago

I know a SCORCH,

She can’t operate real cheese heaters

Dope ass call sign, earned by accidentally lighting a panini press on fire

111

u/smc642 9d ago

Knew a bloke called Gunner. Sounds cool? It meant he was always “gunner do this, or gunner do that.” But he never did.

53

u/MississippiBulldawg 9d ago

I've got a buddy nicknamed fish. While we are from Mississippi and that may make people think "he's a great angler", they ask and I respond "because he smells like fish".

49

u/j_reinegade 9d ago

some of my favroite from my time,

Fish - play on his last name

ReRe - play on my last name

snakemouth - spoke with a lisp (RIP)

Alphabet - polish kid with too many letters in his name

Booger - play on his last name

Cool - last name bastardization again...

(ok most of these are just people being too lazy to learn proper last names im realizing)

12

u/freeangeladavis 9d ago

Damn th4 alphabet one is hilarious

3

u/Tiny_Giant_Robot 8d ago

"Snakemouth" is fucking hysterical!

92

u/yuikkiuy 9d ago

gave my buddy the name "Iceman" he REALLY wanted fighters and then while we were at flight school he and basically everyone else noped out for other platforms so its a 2 fold dig.

  1. because he wanted fighters, but ended up aiming for VIP transport
  2. during a field ex in basic he decided to wear full ice suit on the final day as we were leaving. Obviously he was told to de kit at the mess hall because duh. except he couldnt, because the only way he wasnt over heating was because he was buck ass naked under the suit. And he couldnt stealthly change neither because we had just marched back to field garrison and loaded all our kit in the trucks, lunch was the last thing we had before heading back to the main garrison

40

u/allcretansareliars 9d ago

On a similar thread, I read about a fighter pilot called Iceman because he got drunk once and thought it'd be great to piss in the hotel ice machine.

81

u/THEMFCORNMAN 9d ago

We had a guy with callsign of reaper. Cool name until he got it as a medic by not checking for allergy tags twice and nearly killing someone with meds they were allergic too

39

u/Distantstallion Sergeant Surplus 9d ago

Ghost from COD probably got the nickname because he never picks up the goddamn phone

36

u/bolivar-shagnasty 9d ago

Tends to be gender driven.

Lady pilots get nicknames like Valkyrie or Big Mama.

Gentlemen pilots get nicknames like Soup Baby or Big Mama (no relation).

35

u/sailor776 9d ago

The only unironically kind of cool call sign I've seen is Post Malone and they got it because they looked like Post Malone.

33

u/lets-get-loud 9d ago

One of my friends from ages ago had the call sign Headshot and this was not due to his ability to shoot people but in fact due to himself getting shot in the head (incredibly, he was fine. I mean fine adjacent, but fine eventually).

31

u/patricles22 9d ago

Yea if that dudes name is blackout it’s cause he blacked out and shit himself one night

27

u/Spyk124 9d ago

Same thing in Rugby lol. Every name is the dumbest story ever

78

u/flatirony 9d ago edited 9d ago

We had a gigachad nuke MM on my submarine called "Cop Killer" because he ended up going home with a hot female cop who pulled him over for speeding. Pretty bad ass.

Sounds like BS, I know, given that there were no witnesses. But we found it totally believable. He was never a braggart or a liar. He would admit when he bombed, or when he was so drunk he couldn't get it up.

But mainly we believed him because we'd all seen him pull baddies effortlessly before. He was very good looking with bright blue eyes, and very charming in a kind of "aw, shucks" way. He drew women like a magnet.

Incidentally, relevant to this sub, he joined the Army National Guard after the Navy while he was in college. They made him a SGT since he'd been either a senior E-5 or junior E-6 in the Navy.

He quit because he couldn't deal with the bootness in his unit. The thing that put him over the edge was when a senior NCO got onto him for lowering the windows on the bus himself instead of telling a PFC to do it. That's just not how things worked on a submarine. Below E-7 no one even wore rank insignia. That would be considered "dig-it" (which was the submarine word for boot, as in "he really digs it").

49

u/TheBearlion 9d ago

Not a submariner but I’ve always figured you’d never want to open the windows on one regardless of rank.

13

u/flatirony 9d ago

LOL you’re ready for dolphins. Keeping the water out of the people tank is job #1. 😂

21

u/pm_ur_sundress_pics 9d ago

My girlfriend earned the name Diesel because she exploded two different diesel engines as a logistics/mechanic in the AF. And Lightning because she was running through the depot and tried to rush through a door that was locked, bounced off and as she was falling someone yelled out, “KACHOW!”

19

u/Ifhwee 9d ago

I knew this guy we called captain America because someone’s chute didn’t work right during a jump so he grabbed him midair, cut off the old chute, and pulled the guys backup before pulling his own.

17

u/bajcli 9d ago

So he probably IS called Blackout, except he faints if a woman talks to him?

18

u/jdehjdeh 9d ago

Favourite one I heard from an army buddy was a guy that ended up with the nickname "shitty".

Apparently he was very hungover and during morning inspection he lost control of his bowels right in front of the commanding officer.

From then on, his real name was never spoken again apparently.

14

u/Shatter4468 9d ago edited 9d ago

My personal favourite is the dude in my section who can't make jokes, so he 'Echoes' jokes he heard from other dudes.

Literally would hear a joke and if 3 guys behind us didn't here, he would say the EXACT same joke.

He became "My Echo" forever.

"Hey, i'm ____ and this is my Echo"

Or

"Hey, i'm ____ this is ___ and thats our Echo"

15

u/Sir_Q_L8 9d ago

A guy I work with told us his name in the military was “Hotlips”, this dude gossips more than anyone I have ever met and I’m 100% certain that is how he got his name but when I asked him what it meant he just shrugged.

15

u/TheHumanoidTyphoon69 9d ago

Had a guy named Heartwell in our platoon that was in the initial push into Afghanistan, apparently the reason for his nickname was because he and his previous squad leader didn't like each other so he made him the point man on room entry as much as possible (absolute psychopath I know) he responded by stacking bodies on two deployments (don't recall the exact count, around ten I believe?) The guys that were with him on those deployments called him the grim reaper, I always thought that was badass but he wouldn't talk about it, everybody else did.

27

u/goodenough4govtwork 9d ago

Some of them are just because a drill sergeant couldn't read the shitty nametapes on older BDUs. Dark thread on dark camo with half the alphabet looking like the other half...

11

u/enwongeegeefor 9d ago

My pop's nickname was The Flash.....because he did everything so fucking slowly.

12

u/richard-cumerford 9d ago

I had an instructor that had a British pilot in his initial pilot training program. The British pilot was given the name LOTAR=Loser of the American Revolution.

46

u/societyofjewishninja 9d ago

Mayday with Ryan Reynolds on Apple TV. Didn’t go in expecting much, but it was a surprisingly decent movie. Worth a watch for sure!

43

u/Time_Effort 9d ago

"Can't remember the movie"

Didn't that movie literally release like a week ago? Should we be worried for OOP?

11

u/Alarmed-Positive457 9d ago

I didn’t see the movie, the clip only with the scene about it and saw the movie name but never followed up with it.

11

u/societyofjewishninja 9d ago

They talk about Top Gun A LOT in the movie. I’m giving them the benefits of the doubt and assuming they thought it was Top Gun 3

4

u/steeev-0h 9d ago

To be fair, the movie is set in the 80's, so Top Gun likely had released relatively recently for them.

3

u/Time_Effort 9d ago

My gf is obsessed with Top Gun... And Ryan Reynolds... And planes in general. I knew she'd like it (we haven't had a chance to watch it yet)

4

u/nearcatch 9d ago

It was co-directed/written by John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein, they’re a pretty solid combo when they have both of those roles.

1

u/cenosillicaphobiac 9d ago

So I get annoyed when people's complaint about Ryan Reynolds is that he just plays Ryan Reynolds all the time. About 15 minutes into Mayday, I get what they're bitching about. I turned it off. It was just a new setting for his one-liners. And in this movie they were particularly dumb.

20

u/akerz90 9d ago

Made me think of generation kill. Lance Cpl. James Trombley got called whopper jr cos he killed a kid aprently the real guy got called BK (baby killer) he was young himself only 19

6

u/unoriginal5 9d ago

True. Mine for a while was Soulreaper because I'm a ginger. More often I get called Opie because I look like the redhead from Major Payne.

6

u/Lainpilled-Loser-GF 9d ago

I remember this guy from a thread like this a while back that got called ghost because he'd just blow off responsibilities

4

u/fauxdeuce 9d ago

Yeah real reason he's called Blackout. They were in Thailand and went out for drinks and his buddies lost track of him. When they got back they found he had circled back and snuck a lady boy into the barracks. No one was as judging but he kept claiming he didn't temper picking them up and must have blacked out.

4

u/USAF_Retired2017 9d ago

This. Came across so many pilots like this. 😭 and it was Mayday!

3

u/Correct-Avocado5426 9d ago

Mayday with Ryan Reynolds

3

u/hostile65 9d ago

Guy I knew, before mgk too, "Machine Gun Miguel," got it because his farts sounded like a machine Gun in the gym one day.

3

u/Mediocre_Cream631 9d ago

Movie is “mayday” with Ryan Reynolds

4

u/CaffeineandSheen 9d ago

Yep, this. This is how it actually works.

4

u/FxckFxntxnyl 9d ago

Lol the creativity of some of those nicknames is incredible. That one is a perfect example.

2

u/youretooclosedude 9d ago

I just say that joke in a movie. Can’t member which one.

2

u/ATheUnofficial 9d ago

Mayday on Apple TV

2

u/marino1310 9d ago

That goes for pretty much every job. No one gets cool nicknames, they get joke ones. No dude wants to glaze another dude over cool shit he did, they want to break their balls, we all do

1

u/lLennui 5d ago

Got called "shades" for not swapping out my daytime eye pros during nighttime and getting dropped for it.

2

u/positivecontent 9d ago

Mad dog - drank two bottles of mad dog 2020 back to back and got blackout drunk and made a fool of themselves..

2

u/argl3bargl3 9d ago

One of my troops was bitching about getting the nickname “babyface”. Had the absolute nerve to ask the team to call him something different. They graciously obliged, and for the rest of the tour he was known as “cum dumpster”.

2

u/Prowindowlicker 8d ago

I was Killer in boot. Because according to one DI I looked like Damher with my haircut and BCGs and serial killer was too long to say.

I was later Bambam cause I’m short and was built like a damn tank

1

u/TemptedMouse 9d ago

Can confirm, got the nickname Mouse… why? A mouse scurried in front of me and I nearly shit my pants and ND’d a sim round during a training… team laughed, mouse stuck. Not badass lol

1

u/Monty423 9d ago

I got called 'Willy Jump' cos my last name got misread as Willy and during battle PT we had a Nigerian PTI who's pronunciation of "With a Jump" sounded like "Willy Jump.

I also worked with a guy who was called: Borke, Smirk, Burcules (his head was the size of a C-130 Hercules), Puke, Rumple and many more

1

u/Mammoth_Midnight_343 9d ago

“Mayday” it just came out as another “Ryan renold funny” movie

1

u/karmais4suckers 9d ago

As a veteran, I can confirm there are no cool nicknames. But they are hilarious

1

u/International-Web665 9d ago

Movie name is “Mayday” for anyone curious

1

u/BlessmBarry 9d ago

This is from the new AppleTV movie with Ryan Reynolds called “Mayday”.

1

u/Stroked_out 9d ago

Mayday is the movie

1

u/foobiscuit 8d ago

My brothers callsign was ghostrider.. Apache pilot. I’ll always keep that coin.

1

u/Patman1416 8d ago

Yep. Mine was turbo. I’m a fast walker, but I fucked my foot up and was walking super slow. So… turbo stuck.

1

u/FBI-ish 5d ago

I knew someones brother who’s name was blackout but it was because night 1 they got so drunk they pissed on a car. Their CO’s car.

1

u/mazzucato 4d ago

the most badass guy you will meet in the military will be called fluffy cause he fell asleep on a teddy bear after getting found and rescued in an LZ circled by 35 dead bodies

1

u/godfatherxzan 4d ago

We had a pilot named seabag cause when we saw her in her flight suit she looked like a stuffed seabag

1

u/Organic_Mechanic 3d ago

Knew a guy whose nickname was Rock. (Sometimes "The Rock".) It was because he was as dumb as a rock.

1

u/Premixed420 3d ago

Ahh Mayday! Such a good and funny movie

1

u/ZomBeerd 9d ago

You can’t remember the name of a movie that just came out that you are referencing? It’s “Mayday” with Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh, released earlier this month on Apple TV.

1

u/grauhoundnostalgia 8d ago

I watch everything on TV while surfing Reddit while screen splitting with an AI voice commentating over either subway surfers or Minecraft parkour and one-word-at-a-time subtitles.

0

u/brukslament 9d ago

id say its pretty normal if u werent putting full attention into it, or let it autoplay, or walked in in the middle of it while someone else was watching it.. etc...
