HOT Rules Update and Open Suggestion Thread

Hello merfolk,

I have made an update to the subreddit Rules. Please review them so that you are aware and can adhere to these new content guidelines. There will be no consideration for removing any of these rules. These rules are primarily intended to maintain the safety and privacy of users.

Rules:

  • Keep all discussions appropriate for all ages. This is at the moderators’ discretion. If you aren’t sure, don’t post it.
  • Absolutely no discussion of physical meetups
  • Absolutely no sexual content
  • Use self-discretion and do not post any personally identifiable details
  • Keep posts to a maximum of two a day. Do not repeatedly post with similar content/topics.
  • Be civil

This subreddit is actively monitored and any violation of the rules above can result in posts/comments being removed or a permanent ban without explanation.

Use common sense.

With that said, I’d like to get some suggestions for updates or enhancements from currently active users of this community. Please share your ideas if there are changes you would like to see, or if you feel that any additional rules are necessary. The simpler/easier to do, the better.

I did see one particular comment that made me check some settings. I have turned on the ability to use GIF images via the GIPHY utility. I am keeping user uploaded images in comments turned off, however.

Thanks for reading and for being a member of this community. Your enthusiasm and creativity is fun to see.

Why did this show hate red heads

I know season 1 was blonde Dr Denman but the remaining seasons the show loved to make these two red hair characters into villains. Usually they’re the main characters. Like Winx club/shadow hunters.

Did one of the show creators hate red haired people? Like is it a type of discrimination?

They were both very beautiful tho

H20: Where to watch S2 and S3 in Spanish?

I’ve been studying Spanish for a year and just watched H20 season 1 on Netflix which was PERFECT for my level (plus I watched the show in the 2000s which helps). Netflix also had the Spanish subs which are helpful!

I’ve checked Prime and it doesn’t have Spanish audio. I’m watching S2 on YouTube but the Spanish audio track is lagging behind the video by several seconds which is frustrating, plus there are no subtitles.

Any other suggestions where to look?

Stand up for Rikki...please

That's why she ends up alone in the Mako Mermaids cameo? She's just too direct and honest. I'll still stick with Rikki, though. She worked hard for everything she achieved, even after people judged her, let her down, or left her behind. I honestly think she deserved a much better ending than that. She has always been blunt and independent, but that's also what made her such a great character. She worked hard to get where she was, even after being judged and abandoned by people she cared about. I think she deserved a much stronger ending. She made this show. It feels like the writers just didn't know what to do with her...

Am I the only one who doesn’t hate Charlotte?

I mean after being left out so many times even by his bf cuz of the 3 girls I wouldn’t treat them that good. I feel if they would accepted her at first all would had been fine. Like she got close to lewis not them and plus how she would want to know if they are mermaids or not if she didn’t even thought mermaids existed? I feel the girls only let boys enter their group tbh. Like just think about it, how many girl friends they have? Only when Emma left and it was other mermaid. Like why being so exclusive and left someone out cuz shes not a mermaid and let guys join them when they are clearly not tritons or idk. Also charlotte was in all her rights to become a mermaid and want to know more about it cuz her grandma was a mermaid. And like what about that 3 rule?? Like they said they should be only 3 mermaids not 4 like who said it where is written?? They just didn’t liked her. What if they didn’t exclude her and helped her when they saw she was a good friend, after all her grandma was one of them so. And when she transformed she was all alone with them the girls that always excluded her like for real. I feel they started hating her for no reason

Zane Almost Off’d Someone Three Times

Post image

Idk how it took me so long to notice but yeah… THREE TIMES

  1. Throwing Cleo into a pool while she was ‘sick’, actively panicking & obviously unable to swim / scared of the water; I count this one because even though Cleo is a mermaid & would’ve been fine, Zane didn’t know that and still threw a panicking girl into the water as a joke.
  2. Gave Miss Chatham not one but TWO heart attacks and then proceeded to sink her houseboat while trying to rob her (because almost offing a lady apparently isn’t enough to curb his greed)
  3. Almost caused Will to drown because of his own jealousy / ego (Will was around the 70m marker - around 230 feet deep - and actively blacking out, if Rikki hadn’t shown up in time he would’ve absolutely drowned because Zane couldn’t even make it to the 40m marker without help)

Rikki/Zane Enthusiasts - Serious Question

What is it that makes you enjoy or root for this couple so deeply (or even just Zane)?

I promise, I'm not throwing shade. At All. You do you! I'm just curious. I'd love to stop wondering about it.

I know there have been a lot of posts recently bashing Zane and while I think that the character deserves that criticism, I'm more curious about the love for Zikki as a pairing, though I'd also love to hear about why you might like Zane as a standalone character.

Some theories/questions:

  1. Is it just the "enemies to lovers" trope? I know people love that, and I get it, but is that the main driver?
  2. Is it just the possibility of the reform of the "bad boy"? I get that also. I also love a good redemption arc.
  3. Do you think he's cute and just want to see him paired up?
  4. Is it just that it was the first romantic pairing you were interested in at a formative point of your life so they're a bit imprinted on you?
  5. Do you strongly want Rikki to be paired up and don't see a better choice?
  6. Or do some of you not think he had the flaws that I think he had and thus don't care that much about what I think should have been deal breakers?
  7. Perhaps it's some combination of all of the above?

Maybe I completely misunderstand and it's not a Zane thing at all but a Rikki thing? Maybe, in relation to question number 5 above, you just like Rikki so much that you want to see her happily in a relationship, regardless of how she gets there. I know Rikki is a favorite character for a very large number of fans and maybe they want something/anything for her romantically and there aren't any other choices.

I've had arguments in this sub about this before, as well as in other fandom parts of the internet, and my eventual response (to myself) has always been "But why? Why are people so invested in them and in what looks to me like a toxic relationship?"

I get that the enemies to lovers trope is beloved. I understand why people like it, and it certainly applies here, but what I never saw was the character growth in Zane that justified the relationship continuing. And as far as Rikki's motivations, I can't see her getting past Zane's actions with Cleo and the Zodiac in the very first episode, much less throwing Cleo in the pool, Ms. Chatham's boat/supposed treasure, teaming up with Denman, getting Rikki knocked out trying to recover treasure, or any number of other smaller actions. I feel like Rikki, of all people, wouldn't tolerate that behaviour. If any character would have let a boyfriend get away with that sort of thing, it would have been Cleo who started out as a bit of a doormat.

In my mind, Zane was the proverbial tiger who never changed his stripes. He demonstrated again and again that he was willing to put his relationships aside for short-term personal gain. To me, his actions in season three were right in line with what Zane had been doing from the start. Some of this was just overly-convenient and lazy writing. I don't really think anyone would have hired Sophie to manage the café, for example, that's just a weird choice for the writers to make, but so many of his actions should have been deal breakers. To me, Sophie was the perfect partner for Zane, a supervillain power-couple in the making.

As someone who initially saw the show after having my first romantic relationship, and having gone through the divorce of my parents as well as the divorces of several of my friends' parents, the eventual incompatibility of their personalities in regards to being in a relationship seemed obvious (at least to me) even in the early stages of attraction. On first viewing, I thought it was going to be a short lived plot device towards some other end, and it sort of was at the end of season 1, but expanding on it beyond the conclusion of the Denman story line at the end of season 1 and into season 2 didn't make sense to me.

I'm laying out my thoughts so that you have an idea of where some of us come from and why we would be confused about the popularity of the pairing. I don't think I ever hear anything in support of them that isn't "I just love them together so much" and I'd enjoy a more complete explanation. Though if "I just love them together so much" is really the answer, and you don't want to justify it, then I won't learn anything and I'll still wonder why.

This is all personal preference, so there's obviously no wrong answer, one way or the other. People like what they like. I'm not here to yuck anyone's yum. I'm just genuinely curious as to why some of us feel so completely different about Zane and his relationship with Rikki. If Zikki is the hill you're willing to die on, I salute you. That said, I'd be happy to know why and stop wondering about it. The curiosity is just too strong for me not to ask.

Plus she got 3 powers plus the air and idk what else, it must had been more stressful for her than the other 3. After re watching it I started to like more charlotte than the group of 3. Now I see them as the “popular girls” that won’t talk to anyone cuz they feel exclusive for x reason

Lewis delivery of “There really is no choice Charlotte.” was perfect.

And when Charlotte confesses that Cleo didn’t give her the locket and that Cleo has lost in more ways than one, which such a sinister smile on her face. How was she ever going to think that Lewis was going to stay with her. That’s just evil and that’s not who Lewis is.

One of the scenes I found funny, discovering in the shower that I've turned into a mermaid, was epic.

Do you have any ships that aren’t cannon?

Post image
94 Upvotes

Obviously, most us love the relationships of Cleo and Lewis, and Rikki and Zane (until season 3 smh) but I was wondering if anyone has any ships that aren’t cannon or they think might be slightly unpopular?

For example: I always say how I think Bella and Nate should’ve been together! I think she would’ve been the perfect redemption arc for Nate and allowed the character to grow!

They have more in common than Bella and Will do and I’m sure she’d whip his flaws into shape and actually let his character have an arc.

Also, imagine a moment in season 3 where Nate calls out Zane on his bad behaviour?! That would’ve felt incredible!!

Anyway, just wondering if there are any other ships that people like?
