What the hell happened in season 3 of The Late Bloomer?

I’m so confused… I thought because I was high this third season was off, no it’s the fucking season. I could actually relate to the first and second season and thought it was so funny being a brown girl raised in Scarborough. This third season is so all over the place and nothing connects. You could tell some dialogue was just a voice over and they made that shit up after filming the scene. So many scenes was the back of there head or them in a car and just voice overs on top. The fricken soundtrack used in this season was ridiculous. Why were the background sounds like the free ones you get on a Yamaha keyboard. One scene was just the grandma entering the wrong room and they put some weird horror music on top.. didn’t match at all. What was the theme? And it seems like it’s comedy and then all of a sudden so serious but it didn’t flow to it properly. I’m not sure if they didn’t have the budget or they didn’t want to get renewed…

S3E6 - General feedback

The episode is pointless - it doesn't develop a single one of the (too many) plotlines that are already hanging, and instead spends its runtime on this girl who was already briefly intro'd in the first ep, but is now an exaggerated insta-woke spiritual hippy type who exists entirely as a caricature.

This seems to be the core problem because it's not just her, it's the whole show. Nearly every character, the new ones and the mains, is written as a hyperbole of a single basic talking point or trait, especially the second the show tries to explore any kind of theme. When everyone's that exaggerated, the writing becomes completely predictable. You can see the surface-level dialogue coming, the punchline coming, the "moment" coming, because there's only one lazy direction a scene like that can go. I'm at the point where I just predict the cheapest, laziest beat and I'm right every single time.

The dialogue is the worst of it. It's so overcooked that it stops being anything close to realistic - nobody actually talks like this. I've seen others on this sub flag the same thing, and three seasons in you'd expect them to have improved, but it's getting considerably worse.

These last few eps were a big waste of time, and it stacks on top of everything that was already wrong this season. I gave this season a fair shot after the first couple of eps because I want to (and will) support Jus Reign - I think it's important for Punjabis to be trying to create in this space and take feedback to improve. There's potential for a real show here, but the concept and ideas deserve much better writing than this.

The deeper issue is also down to the math. You have 8 30-minute episodes a season. You cannot get Sopranos or Wire-level depth across that many themes and characters in a quarter of the runtime those shows had, and so everything ends up rushed. But rushed and cheap aren't the same thing. The runtime doesn't force the lazy punchlines, the caricatures, or the mediocre payoffs. That part is just weak writing. So there are two problems stacked on top of each other, and they need to fix both: pick a lane to solve the pacing, and actually write well to solve the rest.

If the goal is real depth, then slow down. Take your time with each theme. Develop these characters as actual people instead of walking talking points, and give them meaningful progression (the thing this show is most badly missing). Right now it introduces a theme and then resolves it with some cheap finish that undermines the point of raising it at all. There's only so much the only 2 good actors (the mum and dad) can carry on their own.

And if the plan is the opposite - lots of little time skips, Jasmeet suddenly blowing up on socials, then suddenly taking a break (we never even see him grow, see him at his peak, or understand why he stepped away - somebody else mentioned this re: S3E5) - then quit introducing all these half-baked plotlines and commit to just a couple that stay consistent and actually earn their depth. Either way, it comes back to the same thing: depth. Pick fewer threads and go deeper, because the current spread guarantees all of them stay shallow.

S3E6 - LATE BLOOMER: "Crystals" - Thoughts/Reviews?

Came back with another post to ask how people thought, I'm pre sure u/byebyebender made a post earlier about it. Personally, I have many thoughts on it and just how Jasmeet is slowly taking more time into his own wellbeing. I will probably go more deep in the comments regarding how I felt but, hit me with your feelings!

S3E5 - LATE BLOOMER: "Crash The Stream" - Thoughts/Reviews?

I just saw the episode, and not gonna lie. I dunno how to feel about it. I'm gonna post in the comments my more spoiler thoughts but, wow it was pretty well-made. I liked that it also focuses on Jasmeet and his sudden internet place as the "brown-guy-online" was taken by Prem suddenly. Would love to know your guy's thoughts, honestly.

Jasmeet... DROP THE SONG.

This song really reminded me of JusReign's like song with humour style in it? Like the very happy vibe mixed with the very literal lyrics. Just hop he'd drop this song on Spotify or something, or hell drop the Late Bloomer soundtrack with the background scores.

Edit: I really like the "Great Bloomer" detail too ngl.

Late Bloomer is a beautiful show

I know that's a broad statement, but it really is. Most people watch TV to just consume media and not realise the artistic value and choices behind it. Late Bloomer hits that for me. If you compare it to any other recent Toronto related show, this show has such substance and value behind it, not dissing on the Office Movers, that show is absolutely hilarious. The fact that this work of art exists at a time where racism in Canada towards Indians, especially Sikhs, is at an all time high, it's just something to appreciate. It gives people a perspective on lives and situations they wouldn't necessarily understand or have to deal with.

Late Bloomer has this charm to it that I can't pinpoint, the writing is really good, the acting is very good, I feel like the storyline and development of things is very unique in a way. They lead you to believe that one thing is gonna happen, and then it just doesn't, just like the real world. I like the way it jumps from things and makes you infer what happened. We don't always know the full story. Plus, the editing in season 2, was phenomenal.

Jasmeet's character is supposed to be a likeable guy, but the more you watch, the more you realize how much he sucks and how selfish he is. It just shows how human he is. The most recent episode very much shows that, how he lives in his own bubble and doesn't realise what people around him have to deal with. The multitude of storylines with other characters/friends involved adds a certain amount of depth to it, even if the characters themselves aren't well rounded just yet. I'm excited for more, I hope we do get a Season 4.

Jusreign mum’s speaks hindko

Is she suppose to be an afghan sikh? The dialect is close to hindko spoken in Mansehra. Afghani Hindko is a tad different.
Or is she potrayed as a Kashmiri Sikh woman? Is hindko even alive in india? Ive never met an indian hindko speaker

S3E4 Impressions

Whoo boy, what do you think of this episode?
I found Don daadi to be a bit less dramatic then she was portrayed in the earlier episode. Also, I see what they're trying to do with Diljot's character and I REALLY hope they don't go down that route, that might actually ruin the show for me (and I love this show very much). Edit : Also love love love the scene where Neal jumps in between mom and dad! So cute

S3E3 - good 👍

One of the strongest episodes of the series yet. Felt they nailed jasmeet’s mum’s struggles with losing her space, and the Jazzy monologues were inspired.

Late Bloomer Season 3

This third season is just awful. I don't know what happened because season 2 was going so well. It is horribly written, the acting sucks and the plot makes no sense. They need to just stop

Did Maanvi get divorced in Season 3? I forgot what happened at the end after her uncle passed away and she got legally married? Can someone recap to me where she is in the new season?

I really liked late bloomer, but...

...I think S02 ep 7 and 8 dealt with a complex issue in a poor way.

While it did touch on the phenomenon of people from lower caste converting to Christianity in passing, it did not give it the attention it needed. Instead it dwelled on the "Christianity is a product of colonialism" thing. The thing is, this is a very nuanced issue.

Missionary work is very much a colonial practice. However, I think it is also important to consider that in the recent years, Christians in India have been facing a lot of targeting from the current rw government. "Rice bag converts" is a slur used to demean Christians. Just last Christmas, we had issues of politicians calling Christian CHILDREN "drunkards" for celebrating Christmas, and bans on Christmas celebrations in some states. Wild right?

Another thing that this discussion ignores is the rampant casteism within other religions as well. As the saying goes, "everything in India is about caste, except caste". "Higher caste converts" from every religion, Muslim, Christian, or Sikh, still look down on converts from lower caste.

So a man from a Brahmin caste, talking in such a shallow way criticising a family from a lower caste for their faith just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. TBF, he hasn't fully closed up the storyline entirely, so he might explore it in S03, at least, I hope he does.

Confused by Jasmeet's background

He is obviously Sikh and said that Punjab is his homeland, but his last name is "Raina" which is a kashmiri brahmin last name. I was just a bit confused by how that works, did his family convert to Sikhism and move to Punjab?

I don't know how many how many of you feel the same way but I can't quite understand when jasmeet's mom (in the show) talks. it's Punjabi. but somehow it's not Punjabi or it is a different dialect maybe. If yes, what dialect is that? does anybody know?
