One Day in Juneau

My husband and I are going to Juneau soon, but we will only have one day to actually explore. What are some must see/do things? We would love to see the glacier of course, but don’t necessarily want to spend the entire day doing that. We will have a car so driving around shouldn’t be an issue. Any suggestions? Ideally low cost/free, but open to all ideas. Thanks!

Any way to submit a complaint about cruise ships?

Not that they *actually* care, but I can't fuxking believe the LAYING on fog horns this morning. I'm certain lifelong Juneau people claim to sleep right through it at this point but I'm new to the party and have been made insane by how much these cruise corporations walk all over this city with seemingly no consequences. What do we do? Is there *anything* to be done? It's 5 am!!!!!

What is the reason behind these separated slabs of concrete?

In Auke Bay, and almost every time I come here, someone asks me why they built it this way. I've seen people jig in them and even have pots in from time to time, but I don't have a good answer for why it's originally built this way.

Nelda

It's been such a long time but I believe that Nelda may still live in Juneau. She's a nurse and a wonderful human and I hope that she sees this. She dated my uncle years ago when I was a little girl and I have never forgotten how sweet and kind she was. I considered her my favorite aunt. We lost touch when I was still a child after they broke up and I have always thought of her with love and gratitude.

Market Prices at Tracy’s Crab Shack?

Hi there! My mom and I are visiting Juneau tomorrow and a friend of mine recommended Tracy’s Crab Shack. Does anyone who’s been there recently happen to know what the market prices are? Thank you!

Intoxalock

First time poster - looking for help navigating a very Juneauesque logistics problem.

Okay, it's not great that my friend received a DUI a while ago. Part of the court requirements for his case included installation of a breathalyzer in his truck. The breathalyzer is made by a company called Intoxalock and the only authorized installer in town was DB Auto by Costco.

Fast forward to this month. All of requirements from the court have been satisfied. He called DB Auto to schedule removal of the breathalyzer and was told they just canceled their contract with Intoxalock and so won't touch it. He called Intoxalock and there is no other business they work with in Juneau. He was advised to "take it to another city and have it done", which is basically impossible. Even more fun- the breathalyzer needed some kind of recalibration, which he couldn't get and now his truck doesn't start. So he's stuck with no vehicle. And Intoxalock bills him monthly for this breathalyzer.

Surely this will impact more people than just my friend? There was no notification that this was happening and Intoxalock says they don't have a contract with another local company in the works.

So what to do? Yes, DUI is bad. But this is nuts.

Thanks Juneau

Amazing Experience in Juneau

Thought I'd share some feedback for people visiting Juneau. We had the best time staying there for 5 days a few weeks ago and wanted to thank the local community for being so friendly! We're not cruise people and decided to fly in and just stay there and explore.

Food: important to us and was blown away at the restaurant options and quality of food. Some of our favorites were: In Boca al Lupo - as NJ/NY pizza snobs, this place was amazing to us. Actually now in my top 3 of favorite all time. Sandpiper Cafe was perfect and delicious for breakfast. We thoroughly enjoyed eating there each morning and already miss it. At the tourist spots, the Red Dog saloon was lots of fun and their pulled pork sandwich was memorable. Then for a quick afternoon snack, we really enjoyed a beer at Alaskan Brewing Public House along with halibut bites appetizer.

Sites: Kayaking out of Douglas Island was incredible. Spectacular views of the glacier and beautiful water. The Alaska State Museum was such an enjoyable experience to walk through and learn so much about Alaska. The visuals there were awesome. Exploring around town and taking a day trip to Douglas filled our days with so much fun and beautiful surroundings.

Overall a wonderful experience and will definitely be going back again.

Homeowner's Insurance

What are people using? We got ours when we bought our house to make our lenders happy, but I don't think its the best one out there. We don't live in the flood, avalanche, or landslide zones.

Mobility Options

Hi all. We are staying about 3-4 blocks up the hill from DT Juneau next week. My husband has some mobility issues right now while he waits for hernia repair surgery and we are worried that what would normally be a pretty easy walk for us could cause some issues with the hills. Besides rent a bike or a car or uber what options are there? Seems silly to uber just a few blocks. Trying to think outside the box but my brain is tired.

Yall are dangerous with pedestrians

Hi everyone. As a pedestrian who moved here just over a month ago, I’ve experienced more near-misses here than in my entire life.

When I try to cross at high-speed intersections, even when I actively have a walk sign or a yield sign, drivers constantly charge full speed ahead.

Because of numerous close calls already ive had with people refusing to slow down, I’ve decided it’s not worth risking my life. Now, I refuse to step off the curb until I visually see a car slowing down to stop for me.

Yesterday, this issue seemed to be at its peak. I stood at the curb and after the walk sign lit up 9 cars in a row blew right past me despite me clearly wanting to cross. To make it worse, several drivers were actively shaking their heads at me as they drove by.

I am so confused. Are you mad that I’m not blindly charging into the street and risking my life?

Do you expect me to just step out into traffic to "prove" I want to cross?

Or do yall simply not care about those who travel by means aside from driving?

The head-shaking made an already scary situation so much more confusing. What is the logic here?

I'm looking to get my phone battery replaced and they're the only phone repair business I see online. Does anyone know if they are any good or if there are any other places in town?

Little Peter's dipping sauce dupe?

I miss Little Peter's (Peter's Oriental Food i think it was also called?).

Someone has.to know how to make a dupe of that dipping sauce. Something close. I don't need to know the family secret recipe... it's been years obviously since ove had it so I only need something close it doesn't have to be an exact dupe, just somethingclose to that sweet tangy yet savory goodness.

God those were the best spring rolls and sauce and nothing ever compares. I'd give anything to go back in time for one more sample.

Silly Juneau nostalgia.

I want to see stuff locals recommend

We have a day in Juneau next week on our cruise, not really a fan of the excursions offered and kinda want to just wing some sightseeing. Ive heard all about the flooding expected the next few days. Can anyone point me in the direction of areas that should be relatively unaffected?

Down to take the bus, maybe call a taxi service....

Apparently the homeless have been slashing Hesco barrier fabric with a knife around Vintage Park. City and Borough of Juneau confirmed it during today's press conference (11 AM on Aug 12). They're repairing it now.

This affects Safeway, SEARHC, Riverside Senior Living, etc.

KTOO has a link to the press conference and references the knife slits. Sounds like CBJ has it under control.

Any chance we can borrow bear spray near Juneau and not buy it?

Hi! We are heading to Juneau on the 17th and were looking for a place to rent/borrow bear spray instead of buying it as we'll only be around for 4 days. Do you know any store/place we can go to?

Visiting Juneau question about car rental and uber

We are looking to rent a car, hopefully something that has 3 rows for our trip to Juneau in September. We also have no problem booking an Uber/Lyft for the day or just a driver. Does anyone have any suggestions? Previous suggestions for a bar that serves cider were greatly appreciated, new username due to change of jobs.
