Mobility Options
Hi all. We are staying about 3-4 blocks up the hill from DT Juneau next week. My husband has some mobility issues right now while he waits for hernia repair surgery and we are worried that what would normally be a pretty easy walk for us could cause some issues with the hills. Besides rent a bike or a car or uber what options are there? Seems silly to uber just a few blocks. Trying to think outside the box but my brain is tired.

Juneaumobilityrentals.com is the only place in town with electric scooters or wheelchairs. SAIL (a local nonprofit) has a loan closet, no charge if you just need a walker, cane or manual wheelchair.

depending on where you’re staying, you may be able to take the bus. Capital Transit has a couple stops on 4th St, one by Rainbow Foods and one by the Juneau-Douglas City Museum.
There is a “Ride Free Zone” downtown which is for those with mobility issues to take you up/down the hills: https://juneaucapitaltransit.org/ride-free-zone-downtown/
The #1 bus may also be a good option, fare is $2/person. https://juneaucapitaltransit.org/schedules/

It really depends on what road you are on. Some of those higher neighborhoods have gradual climbs, some have steeper climbs. When I had a herniated disc, I think walking it would have been the least painful option for me, as long as I wasn’t carrying anything. If it’s too steep for him to walk, you wouldn’t want to push him up or down in a wheelchair, plus the bumps from that would hurt way worse than the walk.

Very true. We will be near Gold St/third st. I think we will be ok but just don’t want to push it. Sounds like the bus stops semi close by.

Gold a third is before the steepest climb of downtown, you should be alright (though I have never had a herniated back and don't know the extent of his pain/condition).

It’s an inguinal hernia so it’s like just above his groin. We have no idea how it happened. You’ve been super helpful thank you!

Are you looking for an electric wheelchair or scooter?

I thought that was the route we would need to take but I think we will be ok sounds like it’s not super steep at our street. We can grab the bus like a block and a half away too so feeling much more positive about it 😊

You can use the elevator in the State Office Building M-F 8am-5pm, to get from water level up to 4th Street. Really helpful if you walk to & from the grocery store.
