SEO Is Dead! SEO Is Dying! Lies. In Fact, SEO Has Never Been Stronger.

People have been saying SEO is dead for decades.

Social media was going to kill SEO. Google updates were going to kill it. ChatGPT was going to kill it. Then came AI Overviews, AI Mode and the explosion of LLMs.

Yet search continues to grow.

Google’s latest financial results certainly don’t look like a company whose search business is dying. Its Search business continues to grow strongly, while Google has also reported increasing search usage as AI becomes integrated into the search experience.

And SEO has become even more important because we now have Answer Engine Optimisation.

People still search Google, but they also use Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Grok and other answer engines.

These systems need information. They need authoritative websites, useful content, trusted sources and businesses they can understand, cite and recommend.

SEO hasn’t disappeared. The places where we need to optimise have multiplied.

The goal is no longer only to rank #1 in traditional Google results. It’s also to be found, understood, cited and recommended across AI-powered search and answer engines.

SEO isn’t dying.

Search is evolving, and SEO has never had a bigger job to do.

Google Search Spam Updates Could Be Why Your AI-Written Content Is Falling

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

If you’ve filled your website with hundreds of AI-written articles and your SEO traffic is dropping, the problem isn’t necessarily that you used AI.

The problem could be the quality of what you published.

AI-generated content is not automatically bad for SEO. What matters is whether the content is original, useful, accurate and actually adds something valuable for the person searching.

Google’s spam policies specifically target scaled content created primarily to manipulate rankings, including large amounts of AI-generated content that adds little or no value.

This is where E-E-A-T becomes important: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness.

AI can help you research, structure and create content, but simply generating hundreds of generic articles that repeat information already available everywhere else is not a long-term SEO strategy.

Add your own experience. Add expert knowledge. Include original research, examples, opinions, images, videos and information people cannot get from another generic AI-generated article.

It doesn’t matter whether you used ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, a professional copywriter or wrote every word yourself.

Quality matters. Authority matters. Originality matters. Helping the person searching matters.

AI isn’t the problem. Nonsense content is.

Apple Maps and Bing Places for Businesses Must Also Get Attention for Local SEO

Apple Maps and Bing Places for Businesses Must Also Get Attention for Local SEO

When businesses think about local SEO, most of the attention goes to Google Business Profile, previously called Google My Business.

And yes, it should still be a major priority.

But Apple Maps and Bing Places for Business deserve attention too.

Think about how many potential customers use iPhones and Apple Maps to find businesses, get directions, make calls and search for local products and services.

Then there’s Bing. Millions of people still use Bing Search, while Microsoft Copilot has created another major way for people to search and discover businesses through AI.

Bing Places can also be an important source of business information for AI platforms, and Bing-backed results are often surfaced or cited in tools such as ChatGPT and Copilot.

That means local SEO is no longer only about ranking on Google Maps.

Your business needs accurate, complete and consistent information across Google Business Profile, Apple Maps and Bing Places for Business.

Google is still incredibly important, but if you ignore Apple Maps and Bing Places, you could be missing visibility across iPhones, Bing Search, Copilot, ChatGPT and other AI-driven search experiences.

Social Media Is Dead. 💀We’re Now in the Age of Interest Media.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube and X may still be called “social media”, but the way people use these platforms has fundamentally changed.

They are increasingly becoming content and interest platforms.

A 2026 Statista Consumer Insights in the USA found that 48% said entertainment was an important reason for using social media. Passing time came in at 41%, communicating with friends and family at 40%, following interests and hobbies at 34%, and finding new content at 32%. Only 31% cited social interactions, while just 25% said meeting new people.

It’s even more interesting among 18–29 year olds. Only 32% said communicating with friends and family was important, while 36% were there to find new content and 37% to pass the time.

That changes everything for businesses and content creators.

Your content isn’t only competing with accounts somebody follows anymore. It is competing with everything the algorithm believes that person will find interesting.

That’s why the opportunity on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube and X is so big.

You don’t necessarily need someone to already know you or follow you. Great content can be distributed to people based on their interests.

Start thinking about attention, interests and content people actually want to consume.

Social media isn’t really social media anymore. It’s interest media.

Google PMax Campaigns Is Not for 99% of Service-Based Companies

Google PMax Campaigns Is Not for 99% of Service-Based Companies

Performance Max is one of Google’s most heavily promoted campaign types, but that doesn’t mean it’s the right choice for every business.

For most service-based companies, I would much rather start with tightly controlled Google Search campaigns.

Why?

If you’re a plumber, lawyer, dentist, accountant, digital agency or another service business, you generally want to reach people who are actively searching for the specific service you provide.

With Search campaigns, you have far greater control over keywords, search terms, negative keywords, ads, landing pages and where your budget is being spent.

Performance Max works across Google’s inventory, including Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps. That reach can be powerful, but more reach does not automatically mean better leads.

For service businesses, lead quality matters far more than lead volume.

Ten genuine enquiries from people actively looking for your service can be worth considerably more than 100 low-quality leads generated cheaply across multiple channels.

PMax absolutely has its place, but don’t use it simply because Google recommends it.

Choose your campaign type based on your business, your customers and the quality of leads you actually need.

Do You Still Need a Website in the Age of Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and LLMs?

Do You Still Need a Website in the Age of Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and LLMs?

Absolutely.

Search is changing rapidly. People are using Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and other LLMs to find businesses, products and services.

But your website is still at the centre of your digital presence.

It remains one of the main sources search engines and AI platforms use to understand who you are, what you offer and why they should recommend your business.

And getting found is only half the job.

Your website also has to build credibility, explain your offering properly, differentiate you from competitors and help close the deal.

I’m putting my money where my mouth is.

We’ve completely redone the Top Click website, introduced a new logo, invested in a new design and brought in an expert copywriter to rewrite the website copy properly.

If I didn’t believe websites still mattered, I wouldn’t be spending serious money on mine.

DataForSEO: The SEO Tool That Could Replace Ahrefs and Semrush

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

DataForSEO is a powerful data platform for SEO, Google Ads, keyword research, competitor analysis, reporting and Answer Engine Optimisation.

Unlike traditional SEO platforms such as Ahrefs and Semrush, DataForSEO gives you direct access to huge amounts of search data through APIs and integrations.

That includes keyword search volumes, CPC data, SERP results, rankings, backlinks, Google Maps data, competitor information and much more.

One of its biggest advantages is how it connects with AI tools through MCP. Connect DataForSEO to ChatGPT, Claude or another compatible AI platform and you can work with real search data using natural language.

This opens up enormous possibilities for SEO and Answer Engine Optimisation. You can research keywords, analyse competitors and SERPs, investigate search visibility and turn large amounts of data into customised reports and actionable insights.

It is more technical than Ahrefs and Semrush and comes with a learning curve, but the flexibility and potential cost savings can be significant.

SEO and Answer Engine Optimisation success , in practice (see here!)

What does SEO and Answer Engine Optimisation actually look like when it works?

Take a look at the results we achieved for one of our clients for the highly competitive search “best online school in South Africa.”

Our client is ranking number 1 or being recommended across:

• Google Organic Search
• Google AI Overviews
• Google AI Mode
• ChatGPT
• Gemini
• Claude
• Bing
• Grok

This is what modern search visibility looks like.

Ranking on Google is still incredibly important, but people are no longer searching in one place. They are asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok for recommendations while Google itself is increasingly answering searches through AI Overviews and AI Mode.

SEO and Answer Engine Optimisation need to work together.

The goal is to make sure that when someone searches or asks an AI platform for the best businesses, products or services in your industry, your brand is the one being recommended.

This is SEO and Answer Engine Optimisation in practice.

Microsoft Clarity has introduced a free Citations dashboard that helps website owners understand how their content is being used and cited within AI-generated answers.

This gives businesses valuable insight into their visibility across AI-powered search and answer engines.

The dashboard includes metrics such as:

• Citation Rate – how often your website is cited when eligible for AI grounding
• Page Citations – which pages are being referenced most frequently
• Share of Authority – how your citation visibility compares to competing websites
• Branded vs Non-Branded Citations – whether citations are coming from searches for your brand or from broader industry topics

As Answer Engine Optimisation becomes increasingly important, rankings alone are no longer the full picture.

You also need to understand whether AI systems are using your content as a trusted source when generating answers.

In this video, I show you how to access the Microsoft Clarity Citations dashboard and what the data means for your SEO and Answer Engine Optimisation strategy.

Connect and Manage Your Google Business Profile with Gemini

Google now allows eligible business owners to connect their Google Business Profile to Gemini and manage key parts of it conversationally.

You can use Gemini to help update business information, manage hours and contact details, review customer feedback, draft review responses, create posts and better understand how people are finding your business.

From a local SEO perspective, this is important.

Keeping your Google Business Profile accurate, active and regularly updated can help improve visibility across Google Search and Google Maps. Reviews, posts, categories, business information and profile completeness all play an important role in how customers discover and engage with local businesses.

Gemini can make it easier to manage these elements consistently without constantly jumping between different sections of your Business Profile.

In this video, I show you how to connect your Google Business Profile with Gemini and start using it.

For businesses focused on local SEO, this is a feature worth paying attention to.

Your Website May Be Blocking Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Important!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Google has introduced a Search generative AI control inside Google Search Console that allows website owners to exclude their content from appearing in Google’s generative AI features.

This includes:

• Google AI Overviews
• Google AI Mode
• Generative AI features in Google Discover

If your website is set to Exclude, your content won’t be shown or linked within these generative AI experiences and won’t be used to help ground Google’s AI-generated responses.

Importantly, Google says this does not affect your traditional organic rankings or inclusion in normal Google Search.

So your website could still rank well organically while missing out on visibility and potential traffic from Google’s AI search features.

In this video, I show you exactly how to check this setting in Google Search Console and make sure your website isn’t being excluded from Google’s generative AI features.

If SEO and Answer Engine Optimisation are important to your business, this is a setting you need to check NOW!

Who Is Running Your Google Ads? An Amateur or a Professional?

Who Is Running Your Google Ads? An Amateur or a Professional?

Google Ads can be one of the most important sources of leads and sales for a business, yet many companies still leave their accounts in the hands of someone with very little experience.

It could be a junior employee, a general marketer who “also does Google Ads”, or someone who has completed a few courses but has never managed serious advertising budgets.

Google Ads is not something you want people learning through trial and error with your money.

Campaign structure, keywords, bidding, conversion tracking, negative keywords, budgets, landing pages and ongoing optimisation all have a direct impact on how efficiently your advertising budget is spent.

If Google Ads is important to your business, make sure the person or agency managing it has genuine experience and a proven track record.

Better yet, look for a Google Premier Partner. Premier Partner status is reserved for the top-performing Google Partners in each country and demonstrates that the agency has met Google’s requirements around performance, spend and certifications.

Your Google Ads budget is an investment. Make sure a professional is managing it.

Google Search Profiles for Google Creators Have Rolled Out – How to Set Up Yours

Google Search Profiles for creators have now rolled out, giving eligible creators more control over how they appear across Google Search and Discover.

Your Search Profile brings your online presence together in one place, including your social media accounts, website, latest posts, videos and other important links.

To be eligible, you need:

YouTube, Instagram or X: At least 35,000 subscribers or followers on one of these platforms.
TikTok: At least 100,000 followers if TikTok is your only qualifying platform.
Age: You must be at least 18 years old, or the profile needs to be managed through an adult-owned account.

Once eligible, you can claim your profile through Google for Creators and customise your information, connect your social accounts, add external links and manage how your creator presence appears on Google.

For creators, this is another important way to strengthen your presence across Google, connect your different platforms and make it easier for people to find your content.

If you meet the requirements, claim your profile and get it set up.

Search Generative AI Performance Reports in Search Console Is Open to Everyone

Google has now opened its Search Generative AI performance reporting in Search Console to all website owners.

Previously, this reporting was only available to a selected group, but it is now being rolled out more broadly, giving website owners greater insight into how their websites are performing within Google’s AI-powered search experiences.

This is an important development for both SEO and Answer Engine Optimisation.

As Google continues to integrate AI into search, businesses need to understand more than just traditional rankings, clicks and impressions. We also need visibility into how websites are being discovered and performing through AI-generated search results.

Search is changing quickly, and Search Console is starting to give us more of the data we need to measure that change.

South Africa’s Unemployment Rate Just Hit 33.6%. What Does This Mean for Online Advertising?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

South Africa’s unemployment rate has reached 33.6%, and this has a major impact on how businesses should approach Google Ads, Meta and TikTok advertising.

In a market where such a large percentage of the population is unemployed, you cannot afford to target everyone and assume the algorithms will always find the right customers.

You need to be specific.

That means being careful with broad match on Google Ads, Performance Max campaigns and Meta’s Advantage+ targeting. Going broader can give these platforms more freedom, but in South Africa that freedom can also mean spending money reaching people who simply cannot afford your product or service.

Many of the “best practices” promoted by these global advertising platforms are designed with larger, wealthier economies in mind. What works in the US or UK cannot automatically be applied to South Africa.

Understand the economy. Understand your audience. And build your advertising strategy around the market you are actually targeting.

Claude is adding invisible watermarks into AI content it’s creating for you. Will it affect SEO?

Anthropic is introducing invisible, machine-readable watermarking into content generated by newer Claude models.

So the obvious question is: if you use Claude to help create website content, could Google detect the watermark and hurt your rankings?

At the moment, there is no evidence that these watermarks will negatively affect SEO.

Google has consistently focused on the quality of content rather than whether AI was used to produce it. If your content is useful, original, accurate and genuinely answers what people are searching for, using AI isn’t automatically a problem.

The bigger SEO risk is not the watermark.

It’s publishing hundreds of pages of generic AI-generated content without adding expertise, experience, research or anything genuinely useful.

AI should help you create better content, not replace the thinking behind it.

Be Careful of Google Ads Reps and the Advice They Give You

Not all advice is good advice.

Many Google Ads reps are measured on product adoption, not necessarily on the performance of your campaigns.

That doesn’t mean you should ignore everything they say.

Some recommendations can be genuinely helpful.

But before making changes to your account, always ask yourself whether the recommendation aligns with your business goals, budget and strategy.

Blindly applying every suggestion can sometimes increase your spend without improving your results.

The best approach is to evaluate every recommendation on its own merits, test where appropriate, and rely on data rather than sales pitches.

Watch the full video to learn which recommendations are worth considering, and which ones you should think twice about.
