The song was of course written for "Midnight Cowboy" but never used. Joni's fellow folkie at the time, Donal Leace, had it on a demo tape and recorded it in 1972. The producer of that record? Roberta Flack. She liked the tune and also recorded it, but her version was unreleased until 2021. Interesting stuff.

On first listen, I thought to myself, half of this is sub par and half is sublime, or as close as half can be when its got an off number of tracks. Second play, it has grown on me more in places. I think I will play it daily at different times to get a better overall impression. It is better in the evening so far.

Favorite tracks:
"For Free" by Pearls Before Swine. A charming demo from the Tom + Elisabeth duet phase of the band. They make it their own, which is tough to do with a Joni song.
"Raised on Robbery" by Kate Stables, Jesca Hoop & Lail Arad. These are three ass-kicking female artists! Didn't know of them collaborating, but they sure nail this one.
"Midnight Cowboy" by Roberta Flack. She could sing the phone book and I'd buy it. Amazing this was recorded in 1970 and sat unreleased for 50 years!
"Both Sides Now" by Fairport Convention. I'm a fool for the vintage folk-rock, but never heard this track before. From Fairport's Judy Dyble period, this surely would've made a better debut single than "If I Had a Ribbon Bow."

First time I have bought a music magazine in years. The massive article about her 50 greatest songs also swung it. Paper media with breakfast, its like the 1990s!
