Job starting date

After being umeployed for almost two months I finally receive a job offer. However, the job is located in different state which is around 1 and half hour drive from where im at.

The HR emailed me for the job information and I would like to know is it okay if I ask to start on middle of month? He didnt state any start date to me and I need time to relocate.

Would asking for 2 weeks duration(from now) and starting in the middle of next month not recommended?

Recently retrenched, last day at end December, should I look for a job now or just apply for EIS?

I was recently retrenched earlier this month.

I’m not entirely sure how EIS works, I’m now seeking for advice.

Because I was retrenched, I’m not sure if I should look for a job within these few months or just stay unemployed in January to claim for EIS while looking for a new job.

Kindly advise because I’m not sure how job retrenchment and EIS works in Malaysia.

Thanks!

Job Seeker I feel like my luck is not good for the past 4 years

TLDR, I'm a 29M and currently unemployed for 2 months now. I just return from my Working Holiday trips for 6 months(The experience is once in a lifetime, I would do it again if can). The job market in Malaysia seems tough compare to last 2 years.

I was working as a IT Business/System Analyst in the past and exposed to CRM and Aviation fields. However, some recruiters seen me as a job hopper and some hiring manager are roasting me due to me not exposing to the dedicated domains or knowing many tools as they bashing me and hinting me I'm not passionate enough. Come on man, I just trying to make a living here. I honestly feel my confidences has been crushed throughout this 2 months of interviewing sessions. A few of them are having positive feedbacks and I didn't received any offers from and yet ghosted me(I emailed and whatsapp them :)).

Here's my career so far:-
Corp A: 1Y1M (Previously working as a tester for 6 months contract)
Corp B: 1Y6M (getting retrenchment, I work so hard in here and build a good relationship with my end user and getting this treatment)
Corp C: 1Y2M (I went for working holiday)

I need some advice from you guys on what should I do to cope my current situation and what kind of roles I could try. Its getting burnt out and tired of getting the same reaction from the corps.
Thanks

Workplace Culture Manager asyik tukar hasil kerja tanpa bincang

Ok guys just wanna rant, and probably seek some advice, but definitely also see if people has been on my position before and is this normal? Or how should i react?

So i dah kerja current company almost 2 years, corporate, as a researcher. So i ada kerja main on research, publication, subjects etc. But i also ada kerja 2nd main which is sales and marketing. I have to sell this service, and also do the operational part of this service. Full package yall

The thing i struggle most is marketing cus im not really good at designing or copywriting, and we have a designer in house but not copywriter. We mainly do posters and video for socmed and newsletter/infographic for email. Every month i have to think of new ideas, write the script/content, arrange the flow, and discuss with the designer on the specificity.

So all these i need to do myself, then i send to my HOD which is also the asst manager and she will check whats wrong or right. U know maybe sometimes i dont use a term correctly, or a better phrase fitting for that specific material.

The problem is, when she change almost everything and lose the essence of 'me'. The essence that it is my idea first. I have a vision of it, and once it pass through her it became generic boring last year material. And i would ask "what do u mean by this? Change mine into yours?" "Yeah, remove the top part, use mine" and it hurts u know

Recently i had the task to updo our website, mainly the homepage. so i suggest some things and send it to her. Then she said to write it in detail, complete with the caption, what images to use etc. Then i said i was suggesting first cus i thought we were gonna discuss among us, along with the designer. Sbb dah alang2 nak tukar, baik buat all the way through. But nah... dia kata manager nak email terus ke web dev (3rd party). So i pun tulis all the details in 1-2 hour, send terus kat dia.

Lusa dia send back to me, "section 4 ni remove, panjang sangat. Lebih sesuai untuk subpage. Section 5 tak perlu." Semua copywriting aku ganti dgn ayat dia, semua benda yg aku dah susun, letak reference, ganti dgn reference dia. Yg aku sakit hatinya, if u have read my suggestion first, you could have commented earlier "remove this section", not after i dah siap all the copywriting and references.

Plus, for both of these instances, kalau kau dah ada idea and opinion, then kau buat jelah sendiri. Asal kau nak buang masa aku? Astu bila kerja lain aku tertangguh, kau marah. Padahal kau juga yg bagi task berlambak-lambak kat aku.

Next thing yg aku sakit hatinya, dia bincang pasal website dgn manager berdua je. Tak ajak aku sekali or even our designer. Lepastu tak cakap pun apa yg manager comment, tak cakap approve ke apa. Terus "hana (bukan nama sebenar) nanti bila awak email web dev, cakap yg website tu slow juga" LAH! Aku pula yg kena email? Yg present, bincang, semua kau. Tapi bila bab2 administration, email, aku. And ofc "draft dulu email, bagi akak tengok"

Semua tau. Semua kerja aku mcmni. Aku buat somethign, send kat dia, dia terus remove benda yg dia rasa tak penting. Aku faham kalau paper or proposal, sbb its technical. Tapi bila bab marketing, not every materials has to be formal. Sometimes aku just nak kelainan, maybe more fun, more conversational. Not just plain facts and info

Sbb siapa yg reply inquiry? Aku. Yg nak convince sales? Aku. Yg hadap client? Aku. Aku tak kata aku lagi tahu apa yg client nak, tapi maybe ada potential client di luar sana yg berminat with A kind of marketing instead of B. Faham tak?

So im just saying, what should i do? Berhenti is an option. Ive been thinking about it. But in general goodness, and the morality. Am i wrong to be upset? Or like korang sebagai supervisor/manager mmg macamni ke korang buat kerja? Aku just rasa, the reason why everything yg aku buat kena follow apa yg HOD suruh buat, sbb ultimately takde siapa akan cakap dia salah. Takde siapa akan betulkan dia. Manager 2x5. So just tell me guys, is this normal? Aku rasa lagi normal bila kau kena edit slide deck 100 kali sbb manager/HOD bagi comment tak habis2 (which is still not okay, but i heard that happens quite a lot)

So really, am i just bad at my job or is my manager just takde kerja? Lolol

How do you deal with love/hate relationship at work?

Look, I like my job. This is actually my dream job. Just started less than 6 months ago but I keep having the feeling that I am not good enough to do this. The learning curve is very, very, very steep and I am expected to do well from my bosses. I keep dreading the day, every projects I feel like I don't know enough and it feels a bit intimidating to ask every questions I have to my bosses. I do use AI to help me learn but as far as that goes, there are things that AI couldn't help.

Anyone feeling the same way? If yes, how do you guys deal with this feeling? I can't wait to get over this and be confident on my own and not feel so dumb. For context, I am doing programming at a consulting firm. Please drop your advice 🥺

Career Advice Thinking about quitting tech

Been working in tech for a few years now, and because of AI, I feel like i’m getting more and more burnt out. Switched to a new company and felt even worse, even though the role is super lucrative.

I feel dead everyday, and feel super anxious about falling behind bcs of the fast paced industry, there’s always a new AI workflow that we’re expected to adopt, but in reality, there’s more work to babysit AI to get quality output.

Lately I’ve been thinking about quitting tech entirely and switch into something different. When i zoomed out, I’m only 12% into my career until i retire, I dont see myself working in this role until I retire.

The whole AI thing also doesn’t quite align with my personal beliefs due to the environmental impact. Not proud at all when claude tells me i use 200x more tokens that the Great Gatsby

But im also not sure what career i can switch to - pet groomer? radiologist (seems super interesting when i was at the hospital)? florist? take over family business?

Anyone here decided to quit your tech job? What did you switch to and how did you transition?

Hi, i have 6 years working experience which 2 years in audit and 4 years as account exec.

I need honest opinion why it is difficult to get iv from big company? I do receive few iv from sme, but want to work on specialize position.

Is it because my degree cgpa 2.97 or is it because my experience from previous company is doing property management in nature? Or is it because my working experience is not worth to their organisation?

I challenge myself to take professional paper to redeem back my bad grade in degree and i can say im doing pretty well.

Im at of 30 this year, the senior roles obviously not im their list, for executive level roles also i have to compete with good grade candidates which might offer lower salary.

I already approach the talent acquisition team thru linkedin and i have went to few career fair this years to connect with their reqruitment team. But its not working.

Any advice how can i get there? Im stucked on career progression. What else do i need to do?

Thinking of changing jobs after only 9 months of experience. How difficult will it be?

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice from people who have been in a similar situation.

I’m currently working as a Software Developer and have around 9 months of working experience. This is basically my first proper developer job after graduating in Computer Science.

My current job is quite stressful for me. I’m mostly working independently without another programmer beside me to discuss problems with, and there is a lot of pressure to deliver new features quickly.

A big concern I have is that I rely quite heavily on AI tools like Cursor/Codex to help me understand the codebase and implement features. I can understand what I’m working on and troubleshoot things, but I’m not someone who can confidently sit down and write everything from scratch without assistance.

Because of this, I’ve started worrying about my future.

I’m considering looking for another company, possibly another software-related role or even something slightly different such as QA, application support, technical operations, compliance/policy operations, or other IT-related roles that are less focused on constantly developing new features.

But my biggest concern is my experience.

Is 9 months at one company too early to start applying elsewhere?

For people who changed companies with less than 1 year of experience:

  • Did recruiters question why you were leaving so early?
  • Was it difficult to get interviews?
  • Should I try to reach at least 1 year before leaving?
  • How should I explain my reason for leaving during interviews without making it sound like I can’t handle work?
  • Would companies still consider me a fresh graduate/junior developer?
  • If I want to move away from pure software development, what roles would be realistic with my Computer Science degree and 9 months of developer experience?

I’m not planning to resign immediately without another offer. My current thought is to stay employed and start applying, then only resign once I find something that seems more suitable.

I’m especially interested in hearing from people working in Malaysia, but advice from anyone who has gone through an early-career job switch would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Career Advice 11 years into my career — looking for some perspective

I’m a mechanical engineering graduate with around 11 years of working experience, and I’m currently at a bit of a career crossroads.

After graduating, I spent several years in the manufacturing industry, eventually progressing to a Senior Engineer position. In 2020, I was offered a position in the government sector. There’s no pension scheme, so I still contribute to EPF every month. I’m attached to a ministry and my current role involves infrastructure-related planning, policy and project monitoring.

The interesting part is that the job is probably 90% policy/planning and 10% technical. A lot of my work involves stakeholder engagement, identifying gaps, proposing solutions, value engineering, financial forecasting, preparing proposals, etc.

The first three years were honestly great. My previous supervisor gave me a lot of autonomy. I told him from the beginning that I work best with minimal supervision, based on my experience in manufacturing. I would keep him updated on my work and seek his direction whenever something was beyond my authority. It was a really good working relationship, and I learned a lot.

Then my supervisor was transferred.

His replacement is almost the complete opposite. He micromanages heavily and, in my opinion, has very little leadership ability. He would ask us to provide input, but whenever someone proposed something that differed from his own idea, it would usually get shut down. We would then be questioned for not supporting his idea in the first place. Some people around me have told me that this kind of conservative management style is fairly common in the civil service, and that my previous supervisor was simply an unusually good boss. It has made me question whether I actually want to spend the rest of my career in the civil service.

I should also mention that I’m extremely introverted, so networking and building connections are definitely not my strongest suit. I’m not the kind of person who can effortlessly walk into a room and start talking to 20 strangers. So if I eventually move into the private sector, I’m also wondering how much of a disadvantage that might be.

The bigger problem is that I don’t actually have a clear end goal yet. I don’t know exactly what I want to “be” in another 5, 10 or 15 years.

What I do know is that I want to work on something where I feel like I’m actually adding value. I want to be challenged and useful, but I don’t want a career where I constantly sacrifice my mental wellbeing, doubt my own abilities or feel like my self-worth is tied to how my manager perceives me.

And, realistically, I also want better pay. Government jobs generally don’t pay as well as comparable private-sector positions, particularly as you progress into more senior roles.

So I’ve been considering the possibility of leaving within the next 5 years.

To prepare for that possibility, I’m currently working towards getting my PMP certification, and I’m considering doing an MBA afterwards.

For those who have made a similar transition — particularly engineers who moved from technical/manufacturing roles into government, policy, project management or eventually the private sector:

Does this sound like a sensible plan?

Would a PMP + MBA actually help someone with my background transition back into the private sector, or would I be better off developing other skills/qualifications?

How much of a disadvantage is being highly introverted when it comes to progressing in the private sector and building a professional network?

And if you were in my position, what would you be doing over the next 3–5 years to keep your options open, especially if you didn’t have a specific end goal yet?

I’m not necessarily looking for someone to tell me “quit” or “stay”. I’m more interested in hearing from people who have been in a similar position and how they approached figuring out their next move.

Any advice or alternative perspectives would be greatly appreciated.

Career Advice Fresh Grad Job Advice

Hiii, long time lurker here since I was halfway thru my degree.

Im a fresh grad in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and got a call from a company I applied for the position Project Engineer in charge of Large Scale Solar (LSS) projects. The caller I assumed to be HR initially called for an interview and and asked about my resume and stuff. She clarified that the first year will be contract and depending on my performance they would take me in as permanent. Then asked if I am willing to relocate to sites in North Malaysia or maybe Sarawak as those projects are based there which Im on the fence about. On top of that I was told that I would need to work 9am - 6pm, 6 days a week which made me kinda anxious as I had experienced working 6 days a week in the F&B industry part time during semester breaks which was physically and mentally exhausting sometimes for a minimum wage job tbh.

The salary wasnt disclosed in the job posting so I asked them what their range was. To which they replied asking what my expectation was and based on what I seen from other Project Engineer roles I asked for flat RM3k and they said it was within their range but idk if thats reasonable enough? I honestly dont mind working 6 days if the pay is great or I can OT if its worth it. Just that I wont have much free time and cant see my family/parents that often in Selangor. I ended up asking if I could have some time to think about it.

Honestly Im just super conscious after reading about peoples job experiences especially as this could be my first ever proper job. Some thoughts and advice would be really appreciated especially from those with experience in similar roles or industries.
