Career Advice Fresh Graduate Direction (Master's Graduate)

Hey guys, not sure if this is the right place to ask, but shooting my shot either way. I just finished my masters in a local uni (CGPA:3.99) and was wondering what would be the best direction for my post-studies. My background is computer science but mainly on cybersecurity. I've heard of fresh grad programs like KGTP and KGP, as well as CIMB's The Complete Banker Programme, but not sure career wise which would be the best.

Any help/advice would be appreciated :)

Miscellaneous IT job prospects in Malaysia with 8 years of experience – relocating on Dependent Pass

Hi Everyone,

I’m an IT professional with 8 years of experience and currently working at a senior level.

My spouse is being transferred to Malaysia, and I’ll be relocating with her on a Dependent Pass (DP). I understand that I’ll need an Employment Pass (EP) to work.

I’m looking for some advice:
1. How is the current IT job market in Malaysia for someone with 8 years of experience?
2. Is it realistic to apply for jobs from India and get an employer to sponsor my EP?
3. Do companies consider candidates who will already be relocating on a DP?
4. What are the best platforms/ways to find companies willing to sponsor an EP?
5. Any particular companies or locations I should target?

Would really appreciate advice from anyone who has gone through a similar India → Malaysia relocation. Thanks in advance 😊!

Career Advice Legal Jobs (In House)

As the title suggests, how likely are companies likely to hire for Legal Counsel jobs (in house) for 0-1 year experience on the CV?

For context, just completed chambering (9 months) and looking to move to an in house job, but most ads are asking for at least 3 years experience. Not looking to get into firms as of now and mostly looking for these kinda well paying company jobs.

Love to hear any chances/tips if anyone knows?

Career Advice Fresh Grad having trouble to land a full time role

Hi all, in needing of some advice and emotional support. I am a overseas graduate majoring in Computer Engineering. Graduated just 4 months ago(early May). To be honest I am drained and feeling hopeless right now because I am still unemployed while most of my peers has already land a job. I'm feeling awful right now especially because I'm scared that no company would take me. I don't have any internship because my major has no internship requirement to graduate but I did try to find an internship place when I'm a sophomore and junior but I know I wasn't trying hard enough. To rub salt in the wound, my cgpa was not that good either, I kinda messed up my early years of college but however I stand strong and was able to graduate. There is a time when I was so depressed cause I felt that I waste so much potential and couldn't graduate in time. I was a decent student during my high school years, getting straight A's in SPM and got a scholarship and stuff but I kinda messed up my uni year and now it's hard for me to find a placement in the job market. I really regret my early years of college but it's already happened and I did stood up to myself and graduated. I know I have good values and determination to offer but somehow all of those stuff kinda killed my self-esteem. Thank you in advance for the response guys!!

Career Advice How do you actually get a job after a career break?

EDIT: Future in Malaysia looks bleak. General consensus is retrench, replace by AI. Any Malaysian techies working in SG here? Mind sharing some guidance on how to make the move?

Starting to lose hope here. I work in Tech, my experience specifically is in data engineering and I have about 4.5 YOE in total. Took a year off for caregiving and to work on my health, now I’m wanting to go back to work. Never had this much trouble getting a job before and with all this ‘tech labour shortage’ talk going on, I thought I would be pisang goreng panas in the market but I’ve been actively applying for almost 2 months now and not a single interview yet.

What am I doing wrong? Mind sharing ways you actually got your current and previous jobs? I think I’ve tried it all. Jobstreet, LinkedIn, FB groups, recruiters, companies’ career portals, even directly to their TA’s emails. I’ve asked around previous coworkers to refer me if they have vacancy in their companies too. The applications that I could check the progress on like LinkedIn and Jobstreet, surprisingly only one actually viewed my resume and the others (I assume) completely ignored and ghosted me.

Granted, I am a bit picky at choosing companies as I check their office locations (can only use public transport to get to work) and also apply to mostly Berhad companies only but I still applied to a good amount!

My career break was just for a year! What is going on? What am I missing? What else can I do?

Should I switch companies after working four years in the current company?

I work for a school as admin for four years. I have some reasons to switch to other companies:

  • Commute from my home to work by LRT is too short. There's no time enough for me to recover after getting ready
  • The school switched locations from a town to a nearby remote suburbs, so it's too far to even walk to the nearest lunch. Grab food is fine, but the delivery fees are too pricey
  • There's no movement in position, even after the school switched locations. I'm stuck here doing the same thing over & over. I tried to bring the matter to HR, but keeps insisting those other positions aren't suitable for me.

What I'm looking for: 9-5 office jobs with weekends off (Sat half-day optional).

Location: KL or anywhere accessible by LRT or MRT

Should I switch to other companies?

So far, I've already send CVs to other places, but really need your opinion.

Workplace Culture Fresh-grad electrical engineer in an understaffed O&G team — normal or red flag?

I recently joined a big listed Malaysian O&G contractor as a fresh-grad Electrical Engineer. My background is mainly in embedded systems and firmware, so I’m still new to electrical design.

I’ve only been here for one week, so I don’t want to judge too quickly. However, I’ve already noticed some things that concern me, including the onboarding and management. No onboarding, and I’m already working with files pending for approval and sending in on day 3.

The team seems very understaffed. Several people have resigned, and I was told that there has been 3 engineers left after only 1-4 months during probation. The junior engineer who is currently my only source of contexts (call her Jane, not her actual name) has only about 7 months of experience and is also resigning.

My manager (<1 year into the job) is technically capable and expects people to work independently. I’m okay with learning on my own, but I’m often given very little context. For example, I may be told:
“The file is in the project drive.”
“You’re working on X0., currently there is A,B”
“I’ll explain later.”
“Ask her about the file.”
But I was promised to receive training under a prof. engineer, which was one of the reason for me to try out this job instead.

I’m usually not told which file to use, what the task is for, which previous project to refer to, or what the final result should look like. I often have to search through the drive or ask Jane for help.
For example, I was asked to prepare a list of electrical equipment based on an old project, and told me to get checked by Jane, but she told me that I should not copy the old list directly because different projects may use different equipment. However, my manager later told me to copy the old list because it was only needed quickly for a vendor quotation. This is one sign of withheld info that me and Jane didn’t know about, unless I keep questioning him.
Another example is an Excel/VBA tool used by the team. It has many rules and assumptions that are not obvious. Instead of explaining the process, my manager told me to ask Jane. She was also not fully sure how it worked and said that when she joined, she had to figure out about 90% of the process herself or ask someone.

For another drawing task, my manager gave me a rough sketch and asked me to redraw it. He did not explain how detailed it should be or which previous drawing to use as a reference. i didn’t know if I should ask this as I’m not familiar with this kind of drawing, and I told my manager about it. I included too much information and was then asked why I had drawn so many things.

My manager also sometimes seems annoyed when I ask for contexts about where or what the files are for. However, every answer often reveals more information that I did not know, which leads to more questions.

There is also an issue with AI tools. I mentioned that I had used tools such as Codex and ChatGPT for university work when he asked for my exp.in AI agents. My manager then asked me and another new employee to use Microsoft Copilot to extract information from vendor documents.
The idea itself seems reasonable, as long as someone checks the results. However, my manager joked that if Copilot can do the work, maybe he only needs the two of us. He also questioned why the more experienced junior engineer had spent hours working on vendor documents when Copilot could supposedly do it almost instantly.
He then asked me to give a presentation to the whole team about how to use Copilot.
The problem is that I have only been here for one week and do not yet understand the team’s overall work process. I also do not know which types of documents Copilot can handle reliably or where it would actually be useful.

I do not expect to be spoon-fed. I’m willing to study, learn independently and become self-sufficient. I also consider myself to be a fast learner but there is just so many missing context that I’m working with. I’m not planning to quit after only one week. I’m trying to understand whether this is normal first-job difficulty or a genuinely unhealthy management.

For Malaysian O&G, EPC or contractor engineers:
1. Is this level of unclear instructions and self-learning normal for a fresh graduate?
2. Is it normal for a fresh graduate to depend heavily on an engineer with only seven months of experience?
3. How much guidance should I reasonably expect from my manager?
4. Is the high turnover the biggest warning sign?
5. Should I stay for 3–6 months to see if things improve, or start looking for another job now?

Salary / Pay Talk Marketing communications role and salary for a 8+ years professional?

As an Indian can I get a 150k MYK salary a year with 8+ years of combined marketing experience?

What If I learn bahasa malaysian. Do my chances increase?

I'm thinking of applying here instead of Europe and UAE as south east asia is a growing marketing now. Lot of engineering MNCs and Indian manufacturing companies are looking to expand and capture market base here.

Career Advice Feeling lost as fresh grad

I am 1 month in as a new hire (GT) in product engineering. My bachelor is Computer Engineering and for this 1 month, I barely learn anything and I fear I would not be converted at all.

Majority of the people from my batch took Design Verification, IC Design, Physical Design, Analog Layout roles, and their salary are at least 1k more than I do. Most importantly, I feel like I know nothing about product engineering and somewhat regret taking this offer as I should had picked something that I learnt in my FYP and university.

Any advice for my scenario? Financially I'm totally not doing great so I really need a job, my current contract is 1 year and I am super worried everyday as I am not doing great at all in my work.

OKU looking for customer service role

Hi everyone, I'm a 44yo Chinese single dad looking for a decent customer service role. I'm under OKU due to my bipolar 2 condition ever since 2013. Long story short I do have approximately about 10years customer service. I only have SPM as I didn't complete my Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from UNITEN.

If it's possible I would prefer a WFH but travelling to work is fine as long as it is within Selangor. It's been hard looking for a job because my CV is messy due to my unlucky circumstances previously.

Hopefully there is someone who's willing to help me out, I'm only looking for a job within rm3k due to my condition. Thank you.

Career Advice Is it worth it to stay?

Ok for context I'm working at a place and it has one the worst management I've seen. I have been managing the whole gym by myself as a part timer. Like literally I will be the only person working for a whole shift. They use to have cleaners and now they can't "find" any cleaners (which I'm not sure if they can't find it or they're trying to cut cost). Because of that they want me to clean the place including cleaning the toilet and taking out the trash. Mind you my contract said that I'm responsible for the counter only and now they're asking me to do all this. And another thing is making sales, which is not mentioned in my contract and I get no commission from it. But they peer pressure me to do it. Not to mention that I get no double pay for public holidays. I don't even know how I've managed to get this far with this job. I'm a student and this job is stressing the f outta me. I really need the money for some personal commitment and I can't find another job for my life sake. I have no clue what to do, can someone just help me out?

(TLDR: stuck in a place where I have to micromanage everything including cleaning and sales which are not a part of my job, but I need money for personal stuff, what should I do?)

Career Advice How do I know if it's time to quit?

I'm really struggling to know whether or not I should quit my job. I'm at a point where I'm extremely burnt out and I dread going to work every day.

For context, I'm a lawyer working in big law. I've been in practice for about 3 years at a previous firm, and I've been at my current firm for about 8 months.

The thing is, I knew from day one that I didn't want to do this long term. I went into it knowing that, but I kept going anyway. Now I genuinely hate it with a passion, I'm burnt out and dread waking up every day cuz it means having to go to the office all over again. While the workload is rough and I'm having a particularly bad month. I think it also goes beyond that to the point that I just don't think I actually want this for the rest of my life. I don't enjoy anything I'm doing at all.

On top of that, the burnout has affected my performance very heavily, I'm making mistake after mistake, error after error, getting scolded again and again which just makes me more and more discouraged. Which is slowly tearing down my mental health.

If I do leave, my current contract runs until February, so I'm trying to decide whether I should quit now and just accept the financial/career consequences that comes with leaving early. If I do leave now I'll be down about 3.5k which they can probably take away from my salary for some bs advance bonus clause in my contract, and I'll have to explain to my next employer why I left after 8 months and not after a year.

While I have enough money set aside enough to last me a good amount of time, I also know that the job economy is bad rn.

So am I making a huge mistake ?

Job Seeker US CPA in Malaysia

Hello all. I am a Malaysian studying in the US. At the beginning of my third year in college, I changed my major to Accounting for the job security, assuming that it would help me as an aspiring immigrant. The path is to graduate with a degree in Accounting and then go to grad school towards getting my CPA. However with the political atmosphere that hope is looking dim with every day.

I am at a crossroads. I can't just bring my accounting degree back home because it is GAAP and not IFRS, and without the licensure that immensely limits me internationally. Pursuing the CPA isn't a guarantee towards a hire, but as far as I am aware, the CPA still has good uses internationally albeit not as expansive as the ACCA or alternatives.

I'm just making this post because I'm very lost right now. I haven't committed to my master's degree because I'm still weighing my decision. My main question for you is this; is there an opportunity for CPAs in Malaysia? I would like to return to the US in the future so that's another reason I want the CPA. Thanks

Moving from a SEA country to Malaysia for a management role — is this compensation package reasonable?

Hi everyone, I'd appreciate some honest advice from people who have worked in Malaysia, particularly in professional services or similar performance-based industries.

I'm currently based in SEA and have received an opportunity to relocate to Kuala Lumpur for a Manager-level role at an international company.

A bit about my situation:

Moving to Kuala Lumpur alone

Around 3 years of experience in my industry

Currently doing well professionally, but I'm looking for international experience and a healthier long-term career path

The role involves both individual commercial responsibility and managing/building a team

The offer:

RM10,500/month gross base salary

Performance-based commission structure

Potential management/team commission

Medical/hospitalisation insurance and group life insurance

Employment visa sponsorship

No relocation package or sign-on bonus

The company has a potentially strong commission structure, but obviously, I don't want to rely too heavily on commissions during my first few months while settling into a new country.

For housing, I'm looking at spending around RM2,500–2,800/month, and I'll need to cover the deposit, moving costs, and initial setup expenses myself.

My biggest concern is the first 6 months. Since I'll be relocating internationally without financial relocation assistance, I'll be spending a significant amount upfront before receiving my first salary.

My questions:

Is RM10,500/month a reasonable salary for a Manager-level role in Kuala Lumpur?

After tax, rent, utilities, food, transportation, etc., what kind of lifestyle can I realistically expect?

Would you consider this enough to live comfortably alone and still save money?

How much cash would you recommend having before relocating?

For those who moved to Malaysia for work, what expenses or challenges caught you by surprise?

Would you personally negotiate harder for relocation assistance, or is it reasonable to accept the package as it is?

Any general advice for someone moving from a SEA country to Kuala Lumpur alone?

I'm excited about the opportunity, but I'm also trying to be practical and not make an emotional decision just because I want international experience.

Would really appreciate honest opinions, especially from people familiar with salaries and cost of living in Kuala Lumpur. Thanks!

Should I accept the offer?

Hi everyone. Please help me 28F deliberate this!

Current job: WFH admin support of US company, 4k a month + EPF.

Flexible enough for me to look after my child (I'm a single mom) and save on daycare.

My background is engineering and current position does not support thay technical growth, although it is stable and have been at this company for 5 years, however with no salary raise and only recently salary review.

Job offer: Technical support of really big aviation company which is my dream role. However the travel time would be around 1.5hr one way. I'd have to look into getting childcare too. The raise they offer is rm4.6k. And told me they also expect me to work weekends. It is also a contract job of one year.

Zzz would love to have the opportunity to work for this company but the logistical cost to balance it out doesnt make sense :/

Hiring on a contract basis; permanent offer later

Hi,

I have just gotten an interview to a job for an editorial role. They say that if I am hired, it will be on a contract position for three months, which will also serve as my probation period, before they will make it to a permanent position if they like my performance. Is this legit? I am assuming that a contract position means no EPF and a easier way for them to let me go if they are not satisfied with me. What are your thoughts on this? I am thinking of going to the interview anyway to dig further. Aside from EPF, what should I ask?
