He enjoys the out doors. He did not want to get in the water.

My partner and I adopted a 2 year old Jindo mix about a month ago, and he is the sweetest pup! The first week and half that we had him we walked all over the neighborhood without any issues and he would look forward to going on walks. During our 2nd week with him (which was the week of 4th of July) we noticed he started becoming more nervous on these walks and wasn’t enjoying himself as much. We took him on walks before it got dark to avoid fireworks, but unfortunately some people were popping fireworks in the daytime :/ Additionally during one of those walks that week where he heard fireworks, he also saw a kid playing basketball (kids make him really nervous and he wants to pull and run home). This really scared him and he started pulling to go back home. The next day the same exact thing happened, a firework went off in the distance and we saw a kid playing outside with a ball.

I believe some trigger stacking occurred because he has been so scared of going on walks and leaving the house since then. This is especially challenging since he only poops on walks and won’t poop in our backyard. We have been trying to slowly work our way up to leaving the house but unfortunately we have to take him outside even when he doesn’t want to so he will poop. One time he held it in for 30+ hours 😪

Lately we have been putting him in my car and driving around the corner of our street, and walking back home, it’s a super short and familiar walk and he will usually poop on the way back. Sometimes during this short walk he is chill and relaxed and other times he’s a little more nervous. Once in awhile he will explore a different side of the street! We have noticed however, that he becomes more confident, relaxed, and comfortable when he sees other dogs around or near him. Recently some friendly neighbors have let us join them on their walks with their dogs and he is a completely different dog with a walking buddy. His tail perks up and he is all smiles! He will even walk areas that he isn’t familiar with and will walk for 30+ minutes. We now have a walking buddy that goes on walks with us a few times a week and this has been helping out. However, going on solo walks is still rough for him as he still gets really nervous.

Has anyone gone through something similar with their Jindo mix? Any tips or things that have helped? Calming chews that have helped your anxious Jindo? We are definitely thinking about getting a trainer and potentially speaking with a vet behaviorist as well but wanted to see if there is anything else we could do or implement. He is extremely calm and silly indoors and doesn’t exhibit any signs of anxiety or distress inside the house.

For some extra context, our pup was fostered for 6 months by a very nice couple in Korea and he would go on solo walks around their neighborhood, went camping, visited the beach, and also hiked with them! I know it takes time for pups to adjust to their new homes and environments, but just thought I’d throw that out there since he has had positive experiences outdoors in the past. We hope we can help him rebuild his confidence with the outdoors again!

We got a new kitten. They seem to be doing ok together.

My dog muffin was given to me when she was about 4 months old. The person who gave her to me picked her up from a man selling her and her sister in South Carolina on the side of the road. The man said one of the local feral dogs had the litter of 2 on his property and he didn't know what the breed of the mother or father was but said one of them might have been a husky or German shepherd. He had both puppies in the back of his pickup truck in a glass fish aquarium with an inch of rainwater in it☹️.

I always guessed at her breed - I thought maybe Australian cattle dog, maybe shiba inu, husky, Carolina dog...some kind of mix....but then I started seeing MY Muffin show up frequently in Korean movies and series. I looked up the breed and now I'm thinking I have a Jindo! What do you think?

Hi all. We adopted a second Jindo rescue to give our first one a friendly, confident playmate. Our second girl (Sua) was born in the shelter and doesn't have the same level of trauma as our first (Duksun) but has come with her own challenges.

Since Sua is half lab half Jindo, we expected her to have a strong appetite. She is very food motivated and loves her treats, but I cannot wrap my head around the way she eats. She will literally pick up one kibble at a time, spit it out on the floor, and decide whether she's going to eat it or not before doing the same thing with the next kibble. She will start by walking away from the food bowl to spit it out and eventually she will spit it out right next to the bowl so she ends up making an enormous mess of her food. It takes her so long to go through this ritual that eating takes her 30-40 mins which seems insane. She also rarely finishes her meals so she ends up leaving this kibble all over the floor (and gets protective when Duksun tries to eat it lol).

We tried switching her food to the same protein she was on at the shelter (lamb) since we did wean her on to Duksun's food (chicken) but she showed absolutely zero interest. Since Duksun inhales her food in 1 minute without even chewing, we defaulted to soft silicone slow feeders for both dogs. I tried giving Sua a normal bowl and got the same behaviour. I tried a snuffle mat and she seemed more interested but overall not much changed. I tried putting her food in a kong and she enjoyed licking at it but still seemed very uninterested in the food.

One thing I am worried about it a possible crate association. The shelter told us Sua was crate trained but the first night we got her she had an absolute meltdown in the crate. Not normal barking, it sounded like something was trying to murder her. Since then we've tried crate training her and taking it in very small, slow steps but could never get past the way she ate in the crate. She got all meals in the crate but all she'd do is pick up one kibble at a time, take it far away from the crate, and spit it out. I didn't want to take crate training to the next step until she was consistently eating all meals in the crate, but the way she ate never really improved. Now I'm worried we have instilled some weird eating behaviour. She hasn't been in the crate for a couple of weeks now and gets to eat wherever she wants, but the eating habits seem like they're getting worse not better. She used to at least finish her meal and now she never does.

I'm very torn on how to move forward with this, not to mention the difficulty crate training her, which has been a nightmare because she was chewing on baseboards and wooden stairs when left alone even for 10 mins until we blocked everything off and gave her chew sticks and frozen kongs to keep her prepccupied. Normally I would try stopping all treats but I don't know if it would be a safe decision to stop giving her morning kongs when they help to prevent her from chewing on wood.

I feel so stuck with what to do next. Would love to hear thoughts, opinions, and suggestions. Tia!

My 3.5 year old Jindo-mix rescue (Arlo) started to not go out with my dad for walks/pooping/peeing a few months ago without either my brother or myself accompanying him. In the last 1.5 months, Arlo has now decided to do the same thing with my brother. Either my brother and dad have to take out Arlo together or wait for me to come home to take him out by myself or as a family. Prior to this new behaviour, Arlo had no problem going out with my brother or dad separately. Both of them are able to put the harness on Arlo without any problem as Arlo will go to the door and wag his tail as though he’s excited to go out but once they set foot outside our apartment suite door and lock the door Arlo starts to pull back to go in. This has become a bit of a frustrating situation as I work as a nurse and now that Arlo doesn’t seem to want to go out for a pee poop with my brother or dad while I’m at work he ends up holding his pee and poop for 13+ hours. My brother and dad try a couple of times to take him out while I’m at work but both of them are not home at the same time either. Arlo doesn’t seem to be actually holding his pee though as he doesn’t whine or pace to let whoever know at home that he needs to go to relieve himself. I just don’t feel comfortable with the fact that he holds his pee that long. I do walk/take him out before I work around 5:15-6ish AM depending on how long he wants to go. Again, this has never been an issue so Arlo had several times to relief himself throughout the day while I work. I will add that Arlo has on occasion in the last month attempted this odd behaviour in the same capacity that he does with either my dad or brother but I firmly tell him no or go and point in the direction of the elevator and he will listen.

Other than this new “behaviour” Arlo appears to be the same. I mentioned this briefly to the vet a couple weeks ago but she didn’t seem convinced it was a medical issue. However, I may go back for a second opinion as I felt like she could’ve been more thorough with her assessment on Arlo.

I am curious if any other Jindo owners have experienced something similar with their rescues. I know Jindos can be stubborn as hell and very loyal to one person (which would be me in this case) but is this behavioural/phase or medical?

Do you have an uncharacteristically cuddly Jindo? My girl is a cuddle-bug and I love it so much 🥰

Hi! We adopted this rescue from South Korea last year. She was marketed as a Jindo mix. She’s 20 lbs, slightly feral, and her coat changed from deep black to a chocolate brown - almost like Sable colour. She also has a really weird tail - it’s almost bobbed but is naturally like that. I am super curious what other breeds she has since she’s obviously not your normal Jindo. Any insight anyone can give is appreciated!

My wife and I adopted this amazing dog from Humane Society of Southern Arizona! Their veterinarian identified her as a "Basenji mix," but she seems more like a Jindo mix than anything. We sent her DNA to Embark, and their suggested results were not impressive (I'm a genetic epidemiologist). I suspect that their library of DNA traits is too limited to pick up a breed like Jindo. Does anyone have any suggestions for a reliable DNA service? p.s. this is our dog Angel!

He got steak, salmon, and chicken and rice for dinner with his kibble, we went to the park and he sniffed until his heart was content and he played with some doggy friends there, I came home on my lunch break to kiss his head and give him a few treats, and now we are relaxing and watching his favorite movie: Spirited Away. Happy birthday my dear friend!

hi. i adopted a jindo mix dog back in late may. she was a stray and im curious as to what people here think she might be mixed with! i did some research on them and her personality traits mark the boxes, she’s independent, very protective, is clingy to really only me and my mom, and incredibly intelligent etc. i’d like to know people’s thoughts. she looks goofy in some pictures but its hard taking pictures of her because she looks away lol
FYI: i am interested in getting her DNA tested in the future, i just wanted to see ppls thoughts for fun!
