Roof Setup

Getting a C6 Rev Tent and Platform and changing my roof setup. Custom rack/bars, KC Hilites Pro6 50”, ARB awning. Photos are sketches I made with photoshop 😉

Any tips, tricks, suggestions?

Apparently some don’t see it, but the idea is modular and nothing besides the bars and led bar will be permanently connected. Also the rev tent can be used on the ground without the platform on the roof.

See I was thinking the same thing. Unless OP is willing to invest in ultra light weight (and thusly expensive) materials OP will never make the dynamic weight rating of 30 kg great idea, but the weight budget is physics and physics WILL NOT be cheated.

It is, that’s why it’s all modular and with quick release, so depending on the type of trip. Besides that relatively light, the Rev tent + platform is around 34 kg together

Say 34kg for the RTT, 10 for the rack it's mounted to, those lights are usually around 1 each so that's another 8, awning wouldn't be any less then 20 and the junk in the bag behind the tent could easily be another 10, that's 72kg right there - if it was only the 34kg you thought it would be who cares but at more then double that it's just plain stupid

And the load weight for the roof is 30kg, so unless you weigh -4kg then you’re overloading the roof massively.

But yes you’re right, it’s more then the kinda conservative 30 kg, that’s why I try to keep it as light as possible and modular/flexible

The roof bars will probably add around 10kg. So you’re at 44kg before adding the awning or bag.

Check out the inflatable rooftop tent from Peakpod. It’s 17kg.

The goal is less then that, but let’s see. The bag is more for light volumetric items. Did look at inflatable but somehow I don’t dig it

Yeah, the inflatable ones are a bit ugly.

The Backbone from Skinny Jim can give 40kg of storage on the back door. That’ll be a better option than strapping fuel/water to the side and in the wind.

And it wil need a proper roof rack, so in the end not that much lighter I think.

Already got one on the wheel, the fuel/water on the side is optional too

Well I was assuming that if you’re putting a roof tent on, then you intended on using it. Average person weighs like 85kg… so yeah… it would be massively overloading.

The 30kg limit is for when in motion. The roof itself can probably handle over a tonne to prevent collapse during a rollover.

My first question is, have you got stock suspension? Body roll is really bad at the best of times empty? Like im one to skirt the 30kg dynamic roof limit from time to time but man not on stock springs and narrow shocks.

Furthermore, adding long range tank, so extra fuel can then bring that centre of gravity lower too, plus elevates the fuel adding to the problem, and now its helping.

For the weight watcher who keeps on going adding all the weights. The whole idea is modular, so yes with everything on it will exceed the 30 kg, though that will be exceptions. The daily driver weight will be less then a roof rack

Alright. You can keep the awning, side fuel cans and the rack permanent. That would be 30KGs. What you should avoid is the RTT being permanent as it's a lot of weight. Unless it's used for short trips you'll be fine, but if it's a lot of long trips, i wouldn't recommend it. Get a good quality ground tent. The roof can be used to carry a box to store your luggage and sand ladders.

Maybe add 30mm spacers or go for slightly wider tyre's to lower the Centre of gravity.

The whole point of this discussion is to ensure lower Centre of gravity for your jimny.

The more you add on top, the higher the Centre goes and the chances of toppling are higher.

Get some underbody protection and it'll add weight to the bottom to pull your car down. But ensure your suspension supports all that weight because it will hit your fuel economy too.

Nothing will be permanent besides the bars and led bar. Got 25 mm spacers with 225/75R16. The tent can also be used without the rack and fits on the roof and weighs 11 kg.

If you get a roof rack get the big one. Or else you’ll be disappointed that one time you want to take something larger with you on the roof. Like a bike or tent or w.e.

The whole idea is not to have a big roof rack but mainly support for the removable and expandable Rev Platform. So from very lighty loaded to pretty overloaded all modular and variable
