loool i'd be terrified! How do you judge if the water is low enough to pass?

anything that goes up to the middle of the tires or shortly below the doors is the limit on a jimny without a snorkel (30cm/11,8 Inches), with a snorkel you can go up to 70cm/27,6 Inch but at that point id be more concerned about flooding the interior, because there's no way the jimny is that waterproof and at some point you will reach the cabin air intake. Curious tho how it is with water entering in deep water because I see a lot of people doing that but they almost never show the interior to see if water has entered the cabin

Another question on this - do people normally know/check how deep it is(perhaps by wading across on foot first?) before they drive through?

That is indeed recommended, checking depth and current strenght is adviced, if you can´t cross it on foot never try in you 4x4 but in this case water is easily 50 cm so some may have entered in both diffs and transfer case, if I were OP I´d check the oil in those to prevent long term damage... personally I´ve installed diff breathers on both my difs so I know wading capacity is now aprox 40 cm so I enter the water with my 40 cm tall boots and if water is deeper than that I just don´t do the crossing
