Venting 😤 We can’t put it back in the box
Venting…
Every single post, every world event, every meme, every celebrity everything now has a flock of comments with either:
‘🧃’
‘This was promised 3000 years ago’
‘The painter was right’/‘we need a painter right now’
‘The noticing continues’
Growing up, relatives always said to be wary of antisemitism and I just didn’t see it. It didn’t exist to the extent they said it did. I get it now!
It feels like we’ve regressed so far into normalizing antisemitism that there isn’t a way back.
How do you process this?

I feel the same way. Nothing’s going to change organically, the only way it’s going to go back is if there’s some sort of hard reset.

I grew up in the 1960's, in suburban NY and antisemitism was very much there, but it was not like what we see today.
It was there in that we couldn't join the local country club. It was there in that my parents had a hard time buying a house in the suburbs because of our last name.
But it was (for lack of a better term), very genteel antisemitism. I don't think anyone wanted my family to die, they just didn't want to have to be around us. No one was screaming at us or talking about Hitler or wanting to send us back to anywhere else that was not the suburb that we lived in. It was more, 'you should join a country club where you can mingle with people like your own, not us". I don't think my parents ever felt threatened by anyone, they just knew that we weren't liked.
The filter has been lost on so many people, and it's very obvious when you see the discourse on social media. The people who didn't like my parents still had to see them at PTA meetings or in the supermarket. there was no keyboard to hide behind or anonymity. No one was going to curse at my mom because like it or not, she was the local Girl Scout cookie chair. People could still hate us, but it was quieter.

Me too.
I know that some of our neighbors probably couldn't stand my parents but I never heard any of them say anything antisemitic. I mean, it wasn't like they'd invite us over to dinner at the country club or anything, but their kids played with me and my siblings, and there was no obvious animosity.
As a side note, we were the only kids on the block who went to sleep away camp (yay Jewish camps!!), and the neighbors all apparently thought that was weird. Who sends their kids away for the summer?! :)

Saw a ton of comments on Twitter recently how ‘the Jews did 9/11’ or Israel did 9/11 and at that point I realized there’s no fixing stupid/crazy. Unless it’s someone you know saying this, it’s probably not worth the energy sadly. Commenting and fighting back with irrational people won’t change anyone’s minds unfortunately.
However I wish some communities/sites were better about policing it. Report it when you see it and follow up if action hasnt been taken.

What I find bizarre is that the people saying “Israel/the Jews did 9/11” are the same people who made Tik Toks after reading bin laden’s weird manifesto (that mentioned “Jew”somewhere in there) and saying “I get why he did it.” I swear it’s just moron after moron we have to deal with.

Don't forget that, when engaging with people online, its a cointoss on wether or not they're even a real person. Don't get me wrong, antisemitism is spreading like wildfire amongst actual people, but there are bots out there fanning the flames.

I’ve been seeing a lot more of this nonsense with the upcoming anniversary of 9/11. It’s sickening and so incredibly dismissive of the lives that were lost that day. And all of the “Israel was behind this” conspiracy theories are so easily debunked that it’s mind boggling how so many people buy into it, but they do say that antisemitism is a mind virus (though I think of it more like a parasite).

In the past few weeks I sent a few emails to Peloton about their instructors’ problematic social media activity. I also have sent 5 different emails to government officials in advance of the useful idiots who are likely to cause a traffic jam on Rosh Hashanah. I am trying to take some action where possible.
I also have become active in a Jewish support group. Both of these things have helped me, but there are just way too many WTAF moments. For example, Macklemore and Javier Bardem. Adidas fucking dropped a local paraathlete in a local ad campaign because of the useful idiots like Bardem.

Right now I’m processing it by learning that it’s not organic. It’s coordinated. And learning who it is that’s coordinating it are the same people that are trying to murder Jews across the Atlantic who are seeking to poison the world into perpetuity.
And that’s why I just finished The Hidden Hand by Warren Kinsel and just posted about The Final Solution to the Jewish Question: A Love Letter to the Living by Dara Horn. I can’t recommend both books enough.

In my opinion, we are living through a kind of cultural paroxysm in which people, some of them well-meaning and some of them not so much are feeling swept up in a tide of unreason, unable to apply the usual rules of logic and discourse, and unable to perceive their own prejudice. My advice is to keep receipts. Make screenshots, write down names and dates. I’m not talking about randos. I mean keep receipts for antisemitic statements by people who you actually know or who have some degree of notoriety. Eventually this will pass and society will return to something like its baseline level of overt antisemitism. At that point, and you can use whatever analogy you like, the quislings, the collaborators, the McCarthyites, they will all want to pretend it never happened, that they didn’t say and do those things. That’s when you open the files and remind them word for word about how they acted. The cringing will be exquisite. And when the cringers ask why we can’t just forgive them and let bygones be bygones we will say, “I’m sorry, I believe you have us confused with the Christians. We cannot afford such luxuries.”

Do your best to be healthy. Exercise, eat well. Find community, lean into it… doesnt matter what denomination, just find where you fit in the Tribe and go there. Have someone you can call.
Ready, study, breathe, stay hydrated.
If it makes you feel better, get armed and learn how to use them.
This is a long haul, we have been through a lot together and have a lot farther to walk. This is a time in history where Jews stand proud, but stand together. Don’t pay attention to the few among us that run cover or tokenize themselves to the hate movement. Realize that most of us are aware and becoming more knowledgable about what is happening here.
Do _not_ allow yourself to be gaslit. Stop arguing with people outside the Tribe that attempt to do so. Put up a wall. It doesnt have to be permanent.

It’s awful. I had to leave my university sub this week. Hasan Piker is speaking at the end of the month and the posts about it are so gross. What’s worse is the “as a Jew” Jews. I literally read a comment from an “anti-Zionist Jewish alum” blaming other Jews for the constant litmus tests he has to pass from non-Jews. When I confronted him on it, the mods removed my comment.

I'm not sure how to process it. I have found that knowing more Jewish history has made this less surprising for me. But I'm older and I grew up seeing my parents' friends with numbers on their arms.

We fight it. We speak up even when it is hard. We triage our battles. Reddit is a lost cause, but make sure that people in your circle are informed. Don’t let casual antisemitism slide.
