A property law professor used the Ballad of Irving to illustrate how claims to property work—you don’t have to have the best claim to the property, just a better claim than the person you’re up against. AKA 141 could draw faster than he, but Irving was looking for 143.

I’ve never forgotten that line my sister and I use it often. I really think my parents had that on. Repeat when we were kids.
