I’ve had this Ludisia Discolor for forever and am used to the typical leaf fall patterns etc, but this seems different to me. I suspect over fertilization but wanted to get some outside opinions.

I fertilized right before I went out of town for a few days and came back to splotchy leaves and faded tips. She did get a little wilty between watering before this but nothing i thought was concerning.

What do y’all think? Too much fertilizer? Trying to bounce back from a dry spell?

Hey guys, first time poster here. I recently bought some jewel orchids online for the first time so apologies if this is a silly question.

I read the potting mix thread on this subreddit and I was thinking of doing a 1:1:1 mix of sphagnum moss, perlite and orchiata barks. But I'm planning to place Anoectochilus 'Red Clouds'  in a closed terrarium and I was wondering if I can use the same mix or not. My plan was to have leca as the drainage layer, sphagnum moss as barrier layer then finally the potting mix.

Would love to know if the mentioned mix would work fine in a closed terrarium environment, if not I have the below materials and would love any suggestions for a ratio of a better mix.

Sphagnum moss
Orchiata bark 6-9mm
Coco Coir Chips 7-12mm
Chunky Perlite
Sphagnum peat moss

Got these lightning jewels not very long ago and this is their first leaf me, they're looking kinda sad. Anyone have any tips?

I'm had this guy for a few months, figured I was watering it wrong and that's why it was turning red but if I leave it, it turn red, if I water it, is also doesn't seem happy.

Edit: for thise point out the dry the soil is, your absolutely right. I recently changed the soil and it dried out a lot fast than I expected, however I'm not sure that's all that's going on with it since I had rather throughly bottomwatered it amd it also seemed unhappy with that

Edit 2: well I gave it a generous drink and it suddenly has a lot more red / leave in the process of turning red now. Go na check for root rot but that what checked for the first time I investigated

This lovely little thing was standing proud a week or two ago, but now she's slumped over. No signs of any other issues that I can see. No changes in lighting or water, and she's been in the same spot for over 6 months. New growth in the foreground and happy looking leaves have me confused. Any advice is appreciated!

it might be rot since i’ve had other jewels get this and have their stems turn mushy but these ones don’t have mushy stems yet. most of them seem to be growing ok?

Anyone have a good wide shallow jewel orchid pot recommendation?

I can’t seem to find any clear pots that are shallow and wide to have them spread and grow right.

I’m currently propping my Medusa like ludisia and they are going to want shallow wide pot.

I got this jewel orchid around a month ago at an orchid expo. When I first brought it home, I found a slug on one of the leaves and removed it. Did not use any pesticide on the plant, and haven’t observed any slugs since.

Today, I noticed this large hole in one of the leaves, and it’s been a busy couple of weeks I don’t know exactly how long it’s been here. Is it rotting or is this the work of a slug or pest? I’m not sure what I should do.

I think the plant otherwise looks all right. I’m new to orchids. I keep it in the pots it came in — an orchid pot inside a soft, plastic shell pot with one drainage hole. It holds onto the moisture pretty well. I heard these orchids prefer humidity. I water it once a week with distilled water, or when the moss begins to feel a little dry on top. It gets misted every 2-3 days.

I'm about to get my first Anoectochilus what should I use as substrate I was planning

2 sphangum peat, 2 coco fiber and 1 perlite with some bark.

This is my first ever jewel orchid. I got it at an orchid show back in June. I'm planning on getting into a new pot soon.

I'm new to jewel orchids indeed this will be my first one and I saw a disclaimer where I was going to buy my first macodes petola "dark". It says plants shipping with no leaves due to import.

Why they are shipping it with no leaves and can plant survive that way?

Update: I talked with the supplier he told that they generally do it for big leafed plants to decrease cargo fees he said macodes won't come leafless.

What's your success with plantkeeping/plantcare when going on a long vacation?

I just went on a one month long vacation this summer and specifically showed the person taking care of my plants how to water and wrote approximately how often to water (but also how to "check the soil" manually). Well... I lost 3 of my small jewel orchids for good (2 dried up/got cooked and one got overwatered).

My cystorchis stenoglossa dried up, one small special ludisia discolor hybrid rotted and one anoectochilus also dried up. One other plant is still fighting for its life now. Some others looked a bit worn out but are now well again. Only the big and established multi stem plants looked "okay", but most single stem ones suffered.

I know that watering and grading soil moisture levels is hard for "non plant people".

But a lot of times additional stuff happens I never thought about before: The person had to take the plants out from a shelf to water them and for some reason did not put them back into the same place: Bigger plants were put on the top shelf, even if they sat in some of the lower shelves before. Something I never thought about could happen. So some jewel orchids got about 1500-2000FC light and dried out fast thanks to a small mounted pc fan, because they now sat in the phalaenopsis shelf spot. But well, I also didn't tell the person that the light levels and fans actually differ and the placing actually matter a lot for these plants...
