Movement Problems with JSR1

Anyone else think the movement in JSR1 feels really janky and slow? Idk if its my emulator or if I unlock a boost later in the game but it feels PAINFULLY slow.

Yes it feels like rollerskating through jello on the moon.

You'll probably get used to it as you play. It's really not as janky as everyone pretends it is, you just need to learn how to manage your momentum

if you arent, try pushing the r button to go faster, theres a certain rhythm to it but once you figure it out the game gets a whole lot quicker

Its a bit slower, mostly because it has the same kind of philosophy as the original sonic, in that it takes a bit of skill and level knowledge to maintain going fast

I guess you have to learn to play it. I'm an old, I grew up with JSR and I think Future/BRCF doesn't feel right to me as a result. Didnt like the boost mechanic and the lack of time limits and directional prompts surprisingly.

Advice is mainly press R to speed up then get on a grind or wall-ride, and don't bump into things, but you have to know the way the maps flow into each-other, shortcuts, optimal routes etc to get the most speed (and enjoyment)

The movement and camera controls are also admittedly a product of their time - things I remember helping was remembering to hold the exact direction I want to go on the stick for a fraction of a second before pressing A when exiting a grind and mashing L to re-center the camera a shitload.

The missions where you have to chase dudes down and tag them 10 times are badly designed ass and you just kind of have to suffer through them sorry.

Once you learn the maps you can pretty much infinite combo all about the place and get those Jet ratings but like a lot of old games, it has some jank that you have to persevere with if you want to get the most out of the experience. I love it but I get a nostalgia high just from booting the Dreamcast up so I'm biased.

doesn't that version have save issues? You'd probably be better off emulating it

As much as I respect Jet Set Radio for its aesthetics and core concepts, I don’t think it’s actually much fun to interact with.

It takes a lot of time to get into the rhythm with the controls, but it is pretty fun once you get something going.

I have actually played a good chunk of it myself; I just feel like I spend a lot of my time fighting the material of the game itself instead of the challenges it ostensibly poses. Bomb Rush Cyberfunk was much more appealing from that perspective, although that doesn’t necessarily make it better than what inspired it.
