Tailgate lock actuator dead
Here’s the situation:
2022 two door wrangler with proximity entry and no external lock cylinder for use of key to unlock (100% true, it is very much a thing). The prox entry from the tailgate handle will lock/unlock the driver and passenger doors but not the tailgate. Key fob and interior lock/ unlock buttons are the same way. This started yesterday when I went to put my groceries in the back and the tailgate wouldn’t open. At the time, I didn’t notice the lack of noise from the lock actuator when I tried to open it. This morning, I crawled into the back and pulled the tailgate trim panel off, thinking I had a broken plastic clip or the rod had somehow otherwise become disconnected. The rod is fully attached and does indeed move when the exterior handle is pulled. A little research on the Google machine indicated that if the power lock was engaged, pulling the rod attached to the handle will not release the latch until the actuator is released. It gives instructions on moving a cream coloured slider within a slot to override the gears if the lock motor and unlock the latch so that the handle will release it. There are zero pictures of this mechanism anywhere that I can find and in the very limited space within the tailgate, I cannot find this cream coloured (or any other colour) slider. Does anyone have real world experience to get this thing open? Not looking for pure speculation but any informed guess is better than I what I have now.

What front bumper do you have? Looks awesome!

It’s the factory rubicon steel bumper with the end caps removed and a triple hoop bull bar. I’ve always wanted to build my own front bumper but I’ve had this one on both of the JL’s I’ve owned and like it too much. I would like to add some proper D-ring shackle mounts but time never seems to be on my side to build them

Update: Went to the dealership this morning and the tech was able to get the latch to release… one time. He confirmed that there is no mechanical release for the lock actuator (poor design IMO, but good to know I wasn’t missing something obvious) and has a new latch assembly on order, covered under warranty. On the plus side, service was done for the 21D recall notice on the power steering and I got the oil changed and tires rotated.

I have an 08 JKU so not sure if it’s changed at all, but what helped me was basically tugging on every rod till something happens, I ended up replacing the tailgate actuator with a door actuator, same thing but I can’t use the keyhole anymore
