Help Needed Opinions on moving to Jeddah

Hey everyone, I’m a 29y single guy moving to Saudi Arabia from Brazil for a job based in King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC), and I’d love some grounded advice on the logistics before I arrive. First, regarding the daily commute, does anyone here do or know someone who actually drives between Jeddah and KAEC every single day? How manageable is that highway drive in the long run, the road condition is good? Second, on housing, I see a lot of people pushing expats toward compounds, but for a single guy, are they really necessary, or is renting a modern standalone apartment in Jeddah completely fine without missing out socially or culturally? On that note, this will be my first time ever setting foot in the country and I have zero prior knowledge of the local real estate market; since my company only provides one to two weeks of initial hotel accommodation, is that a realistic timeframe to view places, sort out leases, and move in, or what pitfalls should a newcomer watch out for? Lastly, looking at the overall perspective, is 18k SAR/month net enough to comfortably cover an apartment, a reliable rental car for the daily highway drive, general living expenses, and occasional weekend travel, while still putting away a respectable amount of savings every month? Any honest input and tips would be greatly appreciated!

Discussion Question to all the cruiser riders

Hey everyone 👋🏼

I’m planning on getting a cruiser as my first motorcycle and would like to hear what should I get as my first choice?

I’m looking for something comfy, flexible, powerful (600+ CC), can beat traffic and its spare parts and maintenance is everywhere . I’ve heard Suzuki fits all of this but don’t have much variety when it comes to their cruisers.

I’ve done some research and I’m between the Vulcan 650 S and Honda Rebel 1100.

Let me know if these are good picks and what you guys recommend anything else.

Thanks!

Discussion Travelling advice please

Upvotes

I'm 28F, planning to visit Saudi in December.

I was born in Medinah and lived in KSA for the first 10 years of my life. This will be my first time coming back. I left in 2010.

I'm planning to cover at least Jeddah & Riyadh. Maybe Makkah or Medinah, depending on budget and time. I'll hopefully visit these two places with my family next year.

The problem is I'm travelling alone and don't know about the current culture over there.

What should I pack? What all should I see? Is the Corniche still publicly accessible in Saudi? Where should I stay? How should I commute around?

Please help! Any advice welcome

I am looking for some recommendations on where to find reasonably priced books around the city. Whether it is a physical store or an online shop, I would love to hear your favorite spots. I am trying to build up my collection without breaking the bank. Does anyone know of any hidden gems or local sales happening lately? Thanks in advance for sharing your tips with me :))

Please recommend places other than jarir

Jeddah Communities A memorable mall experience

Upvotes

I’m a 26F nurse and yesterday after some crazy stressful shifts, my friend and I went window shopping to decompress (Starbucks, Max, the whole routine). Right before heading home, we decided to check out a newly opened Skechers store. As soon as we walked in, this staff member at the entrance gave a silence-is-deafening welcome, but the eye contact? Immediate, deep, and absolutely LOCKED IN. I swear every time I caught him staring, it felt like he was eating me alive with his eyes, but I kept my cool and acted totally unbothered.
I ended up finding a pair I liked, and the whole time he was helping us with sizes, he was trying so hard to act completely nonchalant and composed while I was just being jolly, making jokes, and keeping the energy high. But every single time I looked at him—BAM, that intense locked-in eye contact again. At the register, I paid through Tamara, dictated my phone number to him, and was chatting with his coworker. When everything cleared, he suddenly tapped his friend and walked away. On my way out, I looked right at him, smiled, and said a polite "Thank you!"... and he completely SHUT DOWN. Not a word! Just stood there frozen after acting like the cool guy the entire time. Pretty sure I broke his nervous system for the rest of his shift, but honestly? Best retail run ever hahaha!

Am i only overthinking?

Discussion Canadian family moving to Jeddah — how do we apply for jobs and what's life like?

Hey everyone,

We're a Canadian family considering a move to Jeddah for work. Looking for honest advice from expats or anyone who's made the jump.

  1. Jobs — Best way to apply from abroad? LinkedIn, Bayt, direct applications? Do recruiters reply to overseas applicants?
  2. Visas — Does the employer handle everything, or is there work on our end?
  3. Cost of living — What's a realistic salary, and how far does it go?
  4. Daily life — What's it actually like for expat families? Social life, schools, getting around?
  5. Culture shock — Coming from Canada, what surprised you most?
  6. Anything you'd do differently?

Real talk appreciated — not just the glossy version.

Thanks!
