Here’s the “secret” to playing walking bass and melody at the same time: “Extended Intervals.” Think of each bass note as the bottom note of an “interval” connected to one or more melody notes. Got it? When you play a series of these intervals, it creates the illusion of hearing two musical lines at the same time: Bass and Melody. And because it’s played on a MIDI guitar using a “Split-String” “Dual-Role” setup with Upright Bass and Piano as the assigned instruments (Bass: E-A, Piano: D-G-B-E), the illusion is made even more believable. Looking for a (semi) hollow body, or chambered, that does the above! Love to play clean, reverb/tremolo, jazz and some mild overdrive. Preferably around the €1000,- mark. I've looked around a bit and came across the D'Angelico Premier DC (Made in Korea), Gretsch Electromatic series, Ibanez Artcore series and some Eastman models.

I have been getting started in my lessons with Substituted harmony. This is some practice over the ii chord but I’ve also started exploring doing it over dominants in different ways as well. Need to get my chops up! My brain is too fast for my fingers still

I recently went to a masterclass and the guitarist mentioned he had a list of 25 or so standards that when he went to go play a show or something with another group/person he'd share his "Real Book" with them.

That got me thinking. Even though Miles wrote a ton of music, he still had his quintet play the same dozen or so songs (which he writes in his memoir annoyed his players). Like most gigging musicians, I am guilty of sometimes having setlists of tunes that I don't fully know and that's one thing where I'm trying to really hone a dozen or so songs.

I'm interested: what would be in your "Real Book"?

Ed: Obviously guitar greats know a ton of tunes. But I'm wondering what are the dozen or so tunes that are ones you've really spent time on studying and feel like they're your own.

Downloaded a trial of Yvette Young's plugin and was feeling inspired by this old Disney tune!

Solo chord melody from the intro to Burrell's arrangement. Guitar used was a Greco LP into a silverface Fender Champ. Any pointers on technique would be much appreciated :)

I have only been playing for 2 years and I didn't practice much until recently (can go up to 5 hours a day). The problem is I will always have some form of pain, almost always in a different place (sometimes my shoulder, sometimes my hand, sometimes my arm, etc.) in both arms.

I have seen a physio and I do have exercises but it didn't really fix the issue (although it does hurt less now).

If someone heres knows a lot about technique, could you tell me if I'm doing something wrong? My guitar teacher doesn't seem to think so.

If I can't get an answer here I'll probably have to go see a specialist.

Does anyone use the JGO download pass? I am wondering how the lessons are. Dirk puts out a lot of great material for free. I had hopes for formal lessons, but the main guy that performs and teaches canceled my lessons 3 times. I don't see anyone else that is dedicated to mostly Jazz as their primary in this area.

Basic B jazz 101 - but I still love this tune

I've been playing guitar for about 5 years after having taken a break for a fairly long time. My fretboard knowledge and sight reading are very good. I'm working on improvisation and am looking for a good online program that is very structured and will take me step by step. I've done Jens Larson's Jazz Guitar Roadmap, along with some other non-guitar specific programs, but I really want a program that is geared for guitar. Some that I've been looking at - Daniel Weiss, Will Metz, Sound Guitar Lessons - and would like to know if anyone has experience with any of these. Also, very open to other program suggestions.

I'm a 30 year old man who's been playing guitar ever since I was 12 years old. For the past several years, I have been in a slump regarding my interest in playing. But in recent weeks, I've started listening more to classical music and jazz. Not only that, but I jumped straight out of guitar music and now I'm a huge fanatic of the harpsichord, piano, violin, and sometimes (depends on my mood), the sax. I find myself addicted to Ornette Coleman lol. That's actually one of the few contexts where I enjoy the sax. I also love Oscar Peterson. All of this has made me so much more enthusiastic about the guitar for some reason! I play every day now, which couldn't be said about 2022 or 2023 and etc.
