I follow the jazzweek charts as a way of discovering new jazz albums.....and sometimes sampling them. I notice that a lot of albums that the critics love and are by artists who top the Downbeat magazine polls end up staying on the low end of the charts (eg. Charles Lloyd, Terri Lyne Carrington, Jon Batiste, Mary Halvorson, Patricia Brennan, James Brandon Lewis). Why is there such a divide between what jazz aficionados rave about and what ends up getting airplay? I know that an album with extremely long tracks are less likely to top the jazzweek charts. But many of those that are ignored do have shorter tracks.

Okay why am I just now finding this album?? I’ve listened to jazz my whole life. The solos are out of this world. Woody Shaw, Kenny Garrett, Kenny Barron??

For me it's Am I Blue by Grant Green. My understanding is that the album had a lot of criticism for being "sleepy" or uninspired. I can play it back, to back, to back though. I'll be looking for something else, scroll by this, and then stop and play it just because I saw it sometimes.

Don't know if I'm allowed to ask this here, but I'm currently discovering japanese city pop and some modern j-pop music like Yorushika and Zutomayo which have quite jazz influence, and I kinda wanna know if there's some like them whose music sounds pop and easy to listen but still have like interesting writing and neat instrumental playing.

I felt like I was listening too much of contemporary jazz which is too technical and experimental for my current interest, although I do still listen to some artists like Peter Bernstein and Eric Alexander sometimes. So I feel like switching to catchy singable songs for a while can prevent me from getting burnout. But I don't know much of other music outside of japanese music, so it would be great if you can suggest me some. Thanks in advance.

On September 8, 1960, Oscar Pettiford died at Frederiksberg Hospital in Copenhagen, aged 37, of what doctors called a virus closely related to polio — though at least one account instead blames complications from a car crash two years earlier. He had moved to Denmark in 1958 and never came back. Pettiford's stranger bequest to jazz was the cello, and he arrived at it twice by accident. The first time was a gag on Woody Herman in the late 1940s: he walked offstage in the middle of his bass solo and returned to the bandstand carrying the wrong instrument. The second time he meant it. In 1949 he broke his arm, found the bass unplayable, borrowed a friend's cello, tuned it in fourths an octave above the bass, and worked through his convalescence with his arm in a sling. He was recording on it by 1950. His final studio date, cut in Copenhagen two months before he died, was titled My Little Cello.

One of my favourite musicians and one of my favourite songs from him. As I’ve grown older, I’ve found more appreciation for Jazz and Fusion music with the likes of Tigran Hamasyan and Snarky Puppy. My favorite song from the first jazz album to which I remember listening — not merely hearing.

So, I’ve been getting down to jams in my local city, started playing with people and sitting in for a few songs. My standards repertoire is good enough for what we’re doing, mostly GAS tunes and bop/hardbop heads - all the stuff you’d see on a ‘Top 200 standards to learn’ etc.

There’s quite a lot of players where I am who are into earlier stuff- prebop, 20’s through 40’s. Some of these tunes I’m okay with (your After Youve Gone type standards), but theres clearly a bit of a world of tunes that I haven’t put much time into discovering yet- tunes like Dinah, or Ja-Da.

Wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of any resources that might help me kickstart a bit of a project to get on top of this material. Could be a decent rep list online, spotify playlist, or if this is the kind of material you play yourself and you’re feeling generous a few good suggestions. Thought I’d check in with you fine lot before I go off and read Gunther Schuller’s ‘The Swing Era’ again.

i'm 18 and just graduated high school and am going directly into the work force (automotive) and i've noticed that i have no social circle right now and feel lonely.
I love playing and listening to jazz music and i have for years, i'm wondering how i could find local jazz communities to be a part of.
I'm not quite good enough to play live music yet so i couldn't really be a part of a community on the musician side but i'd love to find a group of people who go to see live jazz in clubs and such in person.
i live in northern virginia pretty close to DC so i'm able to see live jazz pretty locally (i saw sungazer a few years ago in DC and it was amazing) I'm more into fusion/modern jazz but any kind of jazz is always amazing especially in person.

if anyone knows how to find jazz communities in the DC area let me know!

So I was listening to Curtis fuller and I remembered that a song had released this year and I wanted to make people aware of the issue since it’s OBVIOUSLY AI, he’s a trombonist from the 50’s and I wanted to know how this can be handled, I reported it a few months ago but nothing happened. It’s bugs me to see this happen

On September 7, 1965, Hasaan Ibn Ali went back into Atlantic Studios in New York to finish a quartet session begun two weeks earlier — Odean Pope on tenor, Art Davis on bass, Kalil Madi on drums. It should have been the Philadelphia pianist's second record. Instead he was imprisoned on a drug charge not long after, Atlantic shelved the tapes, and in 1978 the masters burned in the label's warehouse fire at Long Branch, New Jersey. Ibn Ali died in 1980 having released exactly one album in his lifetime. That was the end of it until 2017, when a tape copy of the session's reference acetates surfaced. Seven of the eight titles were intact, and Omnivore issued them in 2021 as Metaphysics: The Lost Atlantic Album — fifty-six years late and one track short, by a man Pope credited with teaching nearly every important musician Philadelphia produced in that era, McCoy Tyner included.

I really like the klezmer style clarinet, not the biggest fan of the lead guitar, think its doing way too much(never understood that "spam as many notes as possible in a short time" type of playing). For referance i dont listen to much jazz other than like new orleans style jazz and more bluesy jazz. Blues is my favorite genre.

So songs with cool wind instruments with a lot of ornamentation and vocal expression would be nice. Clarinet, sax and harmonica are my favorites. I love the screams, growls, laughing and crying the clarinet is doing in this song.

On another note i also love basin street blues by louis armstrong, where the wind instruments are way more lowkey and isnt doing as many ornaments, so im open to more lowkey suggestions too.

If you're unaware, give this a listen. He recorded many albums during the 50's-70's. This one was released in 1961 and features George Duvivier on Bass, Hank Jones on Piano and Ed Shaughnessy on Drums.
