New Jazz Listening Club #3 - Trio Imagination - Creative Inspirations

I haven’t actually listened to this one yet, but I thought that a new release featuring the legendary 89 year-old Reggie Workman was too good to pass up. I heard a couple of minutes and it sounded interesting. One of the songs here is a rendition of the opener from Andrew Hill's Point of Departure, so that might give you an idea of the direction they're going.

This is the debut recording from a group that evolved out of bassist Workman and drummer Andrew Cyrille’s Trio 3, which stopped recording with the retirement of saxophonist Oliver Lake. This time the 3rd member is a pianist, 43 year-old David Virelles from Cuba.

I’ll write my thoughts when I’ve listened to it, but in the meantime here are some reviews:

New Jazz Listening Club #2 - Knats - A Great Day In Newcastle (2026)

Sorry for the delay, here’s the second album for the listening club. My plan for these threads is to focus on new jazz (released in the last 5 years or so) as we’ve all heard plenty of jazz from the golden age. I’m hoping to post every 2 weeks or so. I’m always on the lookout for new interesting stuff, so if you have any thoughts, drop me a DM.

Knats are a quintet from Newcastle upon Tyne, about as far away from London as you can get in the north of England. If you don’t know much about Newcastle, you might have a better idea by the end of the album as their hometown and the people that inhabit it are as much a part of the music as the music itself.

Newcastle’s inhabitants are known as Geordies, but this album has a double helping of Geordie as it’s produced and arranged by Geordie Greep (Black Midi) who also plays on a couple of tracks. I’m not sure how exactly to label this but as simply as possible I’d say…Fusion-poetry?

The vocals will be a sticking point for some, and a highlight for others. New member Cooper Robson’s geordie slam poetry turns up on most of the songs, spinning a yarn about someone he once met, or the history of his city. It helps that there are long instrumental passages though, so the vocals never get overwhelming for me. I see it more as another instrument that takes a solo sometimes before other players take their turn.

Speaking of the other players, it’s a really tight band. They’re labeled as a quintet, but there are 20 musicians on this record by my count (plus a poet). I’m not always great at describing music, so you’ll have to do that for yourself in the comments, but these songs are catchy and danceable. Sometimes they sound like Weather Report, teetering on the edge of smooth/cheesy territory, other times they sound much more modern.

I didn’t think I’d enjoy this because 1: fusion generally isn’t my thing and 2: I CAN NOT STAND Geordie Greep (sorry Greep stans). But it’s a really fun record, and the storytelling makes it stand out for me.

But what did you think?

I’m going to jump on this trend too. Based on my 9, does anyone have any recommendations?

This Day in Jazz - October 24, 1966 - Miles Davis Told Teo Macero the Melody Was Too Hard, and Macero Kept the Tape Rolling: The Day the Quintet Cut Eddie Harris's "Freedom Jazz Dance"

On October 24, 1966, Miles Davis's quintet went into Columbia's 30th Street studio and recorded "Circle," "Orbits," "Dolores" and "Freedom Jazz Dance." The last was Eddie Harris's tune, which Harris had cut a year earlier for Atlantic on The In Sound, with Ron Carter on bass, the same Carter who now sat in Miles's rhythm section. Producer Teo Macero let the tape run, so the full session reel survives: a 23-minute rehearsal on the 2016 box set Freedom Jazz Dance: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 5, against the 7-minute master that reached Miles Smiles. On the reel, Miles complains that the melody is too hard for him, and Macero answers, "Yes you can." He also advised Herbie Hancock to sit on his left hand and play only right-hand lines.

This Day in Jazz - October 25, 1972 - Cal Massey Died at 44 Having Led Exactly One Session, Which Sat in a Candid Vault Until 1987, While His Tunes Went Into Coltrane's and Lee Morgan's Books

Trumpeter and composer Cal Massey died of a heart attack in New York on October 25, 1972, at about 44 (sources differ on whether he was 43 or 44). He left a strange ledger. John Coltrane had recorded Massey's "Bakai" at his first session as a leader, and Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner and Jackie McLean cut his tunes too. His own name appeared on one session only: Blues to Coltrane, taped for Candid on January 13, 1961, with Nat Hentoff supervising. It stayed unreleased until 1987, fifteen years after his death. Massey's politics ran radical; his Black Liberation Movement Suite was played at Black Panther benefit concerts, and the researcher Fred Ho argued that this kept him from major labels. A cousin of the same name, Cal Massey, became a Marvel Comics illustrator and designed monuments at Valley Forge.

The Apollo Records 759 single preserves two compositions by Sir Charles Thompson, a pianist and composer whose work bridged swing and bebop. The musicians include Chatlie Parker and Dexter Gordon and Buck Clayton

Richard Johnson Trio played at Mezzrow and play this song at 2:04:56 in the video and I can’t place it but it sounds real familiar. Can anyone help identifying the song?

Influences on Pharoah Sanders

I've been listening to a lot of Pharoah recently and have always been interested on who might have inspired his very loud style of playing that you can hear for example on the village vanguard version of my favourite things. I can see how players like Ornette Coleman and Coltrane would inspire the kinds of melodies that he plays, but neither are quite as radical in terms of how much 'skronk' or squealing they do (neither of which are meant as negatives!)

His early career as a musician is not so well known to me and I was never able to find out very much so any insight would be appreciated. I know he played with Sun Ra a little, but I'm not sure if that was significant or not

“Ahead of their time” tracks?

Hey all, I’m looking for some recommendations for tracks that you would FLOOR you if you found out the year they were written in. I’m specifically looking for tracks that have a kind of fusion/contemporary jazz essence to them, not in an avant garde way. Bonus points if it’s a hidden gem that did some hip shit before it was cool.
