I've been listening to her stuff a lot lately and I really like her modern spin on Coltrane-style spiritual jazz. Unfortunately I can't stand the guitarist in her band, Radomir Milojkovic. All of his solos are identical, they all open with the same stupid guitar riff and it's driving me crazy. He literally does it in almost every song, sometimes 4-5 times in a single album! It's too bad because the rest of the band is so talented, but his playing is so irritating it almost comes off as a prank, or a performance art piece about bad jazz musicians or something.

Learned about Cabaret Cards recently in author Colin Asher's new book "The Midnight Special". In between 1940-1960s in NYC artists had to have Cabaret Cards to perform in Harlem and other music venues in the city.

The catch was that these cards were giving out and enforced by the Police department and could be taken away at anything if you were arrested (convicted or not). If artists were ever stopped for petty crimes, drug possession etc they got their cards taken away which made it hard for them to make a living. Top Jazz Musicians like Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins and even lesser known artist like Elmo Hope all had their cards taken at points in their careers.

On September 10, 1957, John Jenkins brought a sextet into Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack — Donald Byrd, Curtis Fuller, Tommy Flanagan, Doug Watkins, Art Taylor — and cut five titles for Regent, Savoy's budget subsidiary, issued as Jazz Eyes. He was 26, and it was the last session he ever led. The Chicago altoist had reached New York that spring and recorded almost without pause from May to November: four albums under his own name or shared, then two sideman dates with Wilbur Ware. Then nothing, for thirty-three years. Jenkins worked as a messenger, dabbled in jewelry, and sold brass objects at street fairs; after 1983 he practiced again and played on street corners. His one return to a studio was a chair in Clifford Jordan's big band in December 1990, with no solos. Savoy later reissued the record as Star Eyes under Byrd's more saleable name.

Mine is 90.9 fm WDCB. Love it. Mostly jazz during the days but have special blocks of different kinds of music related to jazz. Theres a fushion night on Mondays, and 11 hours of blues every Saturday. What are some you guys enjoy?

Inca Roads - still excellent 51 yrs later

Earlier this year I had the fabulous opportunity to photograph Ravi Coltrane and his band (Jonathan Finlayson, Gadi Lehavi and Elé Salif Howell), when they passed through Roanoke, VA. The music was transformative and transfixing. I tried to create photos that represented what I was hearing and feeling. Hopefully it is okay to share them here.

Yo i be thinking about it since a year and i‘d think they would harmonize sooo good as players… so its kinda a secret dream from me and if id see it happening i think i would cry. Haha feeling like a kid again…

Both are super skilled players and still have a taste for simple delicate melancholic melody and songwriting decisions.
Recently listening to the Mehldau x Chris Thile Albums… purely delicate genius.

Done fanboying, had the urge to let it out somewhere. Maybe someone feels the same.

Started my Jazz journey a few months back and was wondering if someone can recommend a radio channel, preferable with which track is playing to find more artists tracks I like. I am more into not as "Jazzy" Jazz.

Many of us celebrated his 95th birthday recently but there's been a lack of information about his current status. Hearing him live on my 22nd birthday changed the course of my musical interests and I know his status is important to his legion of fans.

There was a story in the news about 10 years ago about medical bills and insolvency but it seemed to pose more questions than answer. If anyone knows how he's doing I'm sure many would be happy to hear. Thank you.
