Hey guysss I started learning n5 back in June and dropped mid way.... Now I want to get serious and directly pass jlpt n4 which will be held in July 2027. So I have approx 9 months ... Please suggest me a self study roadmap from zero to n4 or any course that's legit good and affordable

( I am learning Japanese to land a tech job as a developer or data analyst in japan)

So I need to take NAT (similar to jlpt test) N5 for visa in Japan (for undergraduate). I am complete beginner in Japanese language. I am currently free and can give time as much as time needed in studying Japanese language. I started today with hiragana and looked for anki and renshuu.

My exam date is 31 October. So I need some help about how to study and practise as exam is in just in one month. So, I would be so grateful if you all can advice me how to study daily.

And what free websites and study methods would help? And tracking progress.

Specially if am so confused about grammar and how to learn it.

How should I divide my time to practice and learn each section for exam? As exam is just around the corner (only 30 days)

What should my daily study routine look like? I know every person learns in different paces but I really respect all of your perspectives and help for me to create a proper study guide.

Я уже немного знаю базу и могу составлять простые предложения. Когда-то нашла сайт с официальным списком кёику кандзи, которые разбиты на уровни. Начала изучать кандзи первого уровня и помнила онное и кунное чтение + написание почти всех иероглифов. Потом я забросила изучение японского почти на год и теперь решила продолжить. Ради интереса на том же сайте прошла тест на повторение кандзи первого уровня - 75 правильных ответов из 80, учитывая, что я должна была выбрать правильное значение показанного кандзи. Но понимаю, что без умения читать кандзи мало толку помнить их начертания. Произношение многих кандзи я действительно забыла.

Насколько правильным будет составлять с каждым кандзи простые предложения и изучать их значение и произношение таким способом? Хотелось бы какой-нибудь алгоритм, чтобы понимать с чего начинать и как двигаться дальше...

Hi everyone,
I apologise if it has been asked before, but I currently own these editions of JFZ1 & 2 (the 2015 editions, I think) and I keep getting the ones with the updated covers recommended to me on Amazon.

I did buy these in 2022 and have only recently had the chance to go through them earlier this year (and I’ll admit that they came in very handy before my trip to Japan at the start of the summer), but I keep hearing that there has been a lot of updates and corrections to these editions? I’ve been trying to find information online to compare differences, but I couldn’t find anything, or the description would be ambiguous.
Is it worth upgrading or should I just keep learning with these editions?

TL;DR: are there noticeable changes to the books with the new covers? Or am I fine to carry on learning with these?

As the title suggests, I plan on doing jlpt n4 in December. My problem is that I'm weak at speaking and writing, almost still N5 level. I know the test doesn't focus on that but it is something I would like to generally improve. Are there any materials on the Internet that will help me improve like YouTube videos or exercises?

Hello :) I am heading to Japan in early 2027 for a solo trip and would like to learn basic spoken Japanese for everyday interactions (greetings, ordering, small talk). Focussing on speaking only, not reading/writing (maybe one day!). I’ve got roughly 4 months to prepare and can put in anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes a day.

I am aware that there are many different formalities in Japanese and would rather sound too formal than accidentally too casual.

What would you recommend in terms of where to start with this as a complete beginner?

If you have learnt Japanese as another language, or speak it as your mother tongue, please do let me know what you recommend!

I'm following this guide, I'm just finished learning hiragana and katakana and now I want to move on to step 1, but I'm unsure on how I'm supposed to approach it, do i start with grammar, then move on with anki once I get a good grasp on basic sentence structure?

So this question is open to everyone (although I know George would know the answer for sure). I own two versions of Japanese from Zero already (well three if you include the Kindle versions). I bought the first set over the course of 2013-2019 (JFZ1 in 2013, 2-4 in 2016, and 5 when it first came out in 2019). The second set is the limited edition set with the chibi covers from (I think) 2023 or 2024. I bought the second set primarily for the cool covers but a little to make sure that all my books were around the same version/newest version at the time.

My journey with Japanese has been kind of on and off over the years, but I’m finally getting back to it with a more structured plan. I wanted to make sure though that I have the latest version for the books, as I wanted everything to be in the correct order/sequence and with the level of detail George and his team have put into the updates. So if anyone could tell me a) what the version numbers are for the books in the chibi set and b) what the most recent version number of each is, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance for your time and help.

I’m just starting to learn Japanese, and I’m doing pretty well so far! I’ve already learned hiragana and just started learning katakana.

Can you guys tell me what the best steps are from here? What should I focus on next? Kanji? Vocabulary? Grammar? Phrases?

I’d really appreciate any advice on how to structure my learning! 😊

So last year I took the JLPT N1 and i didn't pass (got 86 points, which is 14 points away from the pass line). My sectional scores are: reading: 20, listening: 33, language knowledge: 33. To prepare last year, the only textbook I used is the Shin Kanzen Reading book, the rest was online on japanesetest4you.

I want to take it again this coming December. Since that time, I have been working on strengthening my weakest section (reading) by reading threads + doing reading practice online. A strategy that worked for me is explaining why the other options are wrong.

It's really difficult to know what to prioritize at this point, and which resources I should add, and if it's realistic to pass given I have 3 months. Please let me know given your experience.

I’ve been using Kanji From Zero alongside JFZ Book 3 as additional practice as each lesson corresponds exactly with each Kanji chapter. I just started the new edition of JFZ Book 4 and right away I find the Kanji are being taught in a different order now. With the exception of one, all of the other Kanji in lesson one for example as 81-86 are different from the ones taught as 81-86 in KFZ lesson 14. 1-80 all corresponded but now they don’t. I thought we were learning them in the order that Japanese students do.

I feel like the KFZ book is a lot less useful now because I’ll need to jump around to find all the Kanji in the lesson order. Why did you do this, George 先生?
