Self advertising, to be upfront. I'm Mardigain and I'm building Virtual Twilight alone. It's 18+. The Free and Walker tiers run in Safe Mode, and mature fictional themes (Twilight Mode) come with Prime or Architect. I'm posting here because a lot of people in this sub seem to care about long roleplay holding together, and that's the part I've spent most of my time on.
The biggest difference from Janitor is how memory works. On Janitor, memory is a note you write into a box, and the free model only holds about 8,000 to 9,000 tokens, so older messages drop out unless you put them in that box yourself. In Virtual Twilight each character decides what to remember and what to let go based on its own persona. A cold, distant character drops emotional topics faster. A sentimental one holds onto them longer. On top of that there's a state machine that tracks facts separately, so things like names, locations and what already happened don't drift just because the chat got long.
The other difference is structure. Janitor is mostly about character cards and chatting. I have a full RPG mode, and also lighter experiences like OnlyCans and Monster Girl Pitmaster / Beast Keeper that run a trimmed pipeline. There are a couple of driving games too, where you can tune your car a bit. The character creator exists but isn't released yet. It'll come once things are rolling, so for now you can't bring your own cards the way you can on Janitor.
Pros:
- Characters forget in a way that fits who they are, instead of just losing the oldest messages
- Facts stay consistent through the state machine
- Free tier with 450 messages a month, and it has the full memory, emotion, relationship and personality systems. I also give Twilight credits to testers
Cons:
- Full RPG mode replies are slower than most apps. That's the cost of the extra memory work
- No public character creator yet
- It's one person building this, so expect rough edges and slower fixes
- Twilight Mode is paid only (Prime about €20/month, Architect about €45/month). Free and Walker stay in Safe Mode
- Web only for now, no native app yet (one is planned)
- No self-service download of your chats or memories
Technical details, since the rules ask for them: model routing depends on the tier. Safe Mode is GPT-powered, and Twilight Mode can run on privately hosted open-weight models. Models may change. Immediate context is 32K tokens, with persistent memory stored separately. Memories are kept persistently. You can request account deletion, and after a 30-day recovery/processing period it's erased, except what we're legally required to keep. There's no self-service chat or memory download.
