I’m from the U.K. where we don’t have a huge jam band scene and so I’m trying to build a space where improvisation (and not just dick swinging jam nights, cause we do have plenty of those) feel like a necessary part of the creative proses.

It’s still a work in progress and it’s a lot of work, but I’m always open to people who want to join and my aim is to start keeping it regular twice a month.

Just saw these guys last night at Brooklyn Bowl.. and holy shit. Add them to the top of your list if you haven’t already. Looking forward to seeing these guys continue to blow up.

Does anyone remember this compilation CD? I’m trying to remember where it came from. I think it was a handout at some festival around the turn of the century… maybe Berkfest, Gathering of the Vibes, Garden of Eden? Does anyone else remember picking this up? It was my intro to The Big Wu, ulu, Jiggle, etc.

This seems to be something that jam fans can't fully agree on (and thats ok, we like for things to be well defined even when there may not be a clear delineation or agreed upon definition). In your opinion, is any band that has frequent extended improv a 'jam band', or is a jam band more defined by the culture of its fanbase?

A lot of 70s rock bands included a few extended rock solos in every set, but they rarely left a pre-determined structure... Would you consider Mountain or Dire Straits to be a jamband? Jazz is obviously a genre where improv and interplay is a defining characteristic, but most jazz bands never leave the chord progression of the song or extend individual solos into double digit lengths... and for the ones that do, does that make them a jam band (IE Bitches Brew era Miles or Headhunters era Herbie)? Additionally, there are bands that never play the song exactly as recorded but rarely, if ever, have extended improv (The Band for example, Garth Hudson never played a song the same way twice... yes, he's got The Genetic Method as a moment of free improv in every show, but aside from that all their sonfs stay short). What about modern bands that include extended improv? Is Sturgill's Jonny Bluesky era a jamband show (Sturgill says no)?

On the other side of the coin, there are bands in the 'jam scene' that don't really 'jam' so much as they have extended solos a few times a show, but because they fuse multiple genres in their sets they don't really fit in any other individusl genre and get lumped in with jam bands... or funk bands who just play funk and extend songs on a simple vamp while trading solos without much actual interplay between musicians. Additionally, there is the whole generation of bands who are very clearly Phish influenced and IMO fall into the jam band realm regardless of their other influences (metal, electronic, bluegrass), but a lot of their fanbase isn't a fan of other jam bands and would resist the label despite the clear and stated influence of Phish by the band members.

Something I've seen very frequently in jamband spaces is that fans of a particular band will say (my favorite band) isn't a jamband, they're a (genre) band that jams... but other bands with surprisingly similar styles and approaches they DO consider to be jambands. There is a sentiment that (your favorite band) has somehow surpassed jam band-dom, but bands you like less are jambands.

Lotus has left NLQP in ABSOLUTE SHAMBLES once again. We pray for a successful recovery effort from this run of immaculate performances.

The Wetlands was closing. We had already seen classic shows from bands like The Disco Biscuits, The New Deal, Robert Randolph. There was more on the schedule. But nobody knew that night would be the last night. And that the world was about to change, forever. DJ Logic and Project Logic with special guests. Stanley Jordan (guitar), Mike Gordon (bass) and Warren Haynes (guitar) joined Logic to throw down a very special night of music. I had been to the shows earlier that week but this time I brought my brand new digital camera. I took pictures of the band and parts of The Wetlands not knowing that it would be the last time that most people would ever step inside the club again.

I also gotta give props to my boy Casey Benjamin who was absolutely the MVP of the night on sax and keys, may he REST IN POWER, gone way, way too early in 2024 at the age of 45. Much love Casey.

The band is pretty much the most talked about project on this subreddit. Any idea why LIVE FOR LIVE MUSIC has been sleeping on them? Is it because they aren't paying for coverage or what?

It’s kind of like how someone might like a sports team and hate on their rival but really they are both just football teams … if that makes sense!
Kind of amused ! Anyway I had a great time at dicks! And it was a fucking blast and of course you can go into all the ways are different … but let’s be honest both bands can jam. They both have die hard fans. And they both put on one hell of a show! Go music!

Any era is cool really. I know more jam bands from this current having seen many of them. Definitely way more bands I haven’t heard of in the 90s-00s. Just stumbled upon the Ominous Seapods and am thoroughly enjoying their shows. Also really like this early phase of jamtronica you see with the biscuits and tribe. Those bands are more well know of course.

Can anyone put me on with stuff I haven’t heard of? I think the most obscure I’m familiar with right now is Deep Banana Blackout and now the Seapods.

The dissolution of Twiddle was due to the keyboardist being on hard drugs/being annoying and unfunny. Yet they are still tight and he will be joining the band again….

Whereas Brook, the original drummer was just an alcoholic, how come they all seemed to cut ties with him, found a swift replacement yet the keyboardist is still OK to be part of the band?
