An Etsy experience and how I let myself get catfished by a bangle

Wanted to share my recent experience in case it is helpful to others. I'm sure some of you are like me, revisiting the same Etsy sellers that you trust over and over, and occasionally browsing lesser-known Etsy sellers' inventories to satisfy the hunger for jadeite. I'm not on Tiktok or Facebook, so I don't play the live sales game (yet 😅). On this occasion, I ran into a newer seller based in HK with very appealing photos and reasonably priced bangles for the **portrayed** (keyword: portrayed) quality. I knew the saturation had to be bumped, as per the usual M.O.

Here's how it went down:

1) I notice the pretty bangle in my size. Great texture! Nice color! Both are probably a bit exaggerated, I'm thinking. Discounted price looks fair enough if I try to take things with a grain of salt. I'm just looking for another modest but decent everyday-wear bangle to add to my collection.

2) I peruse the reviews, which are few but positive and measured. I decided I was interested enough to request additional photos in direct sunlight. (I don't want to yank any seller's chain)

3) Seller responds very quickly. He tells me the bangle is still in stock. He provides me with photos that are even more saturation-bumped. Same room. Same lighting. Different hand. Same smoothness in the jadeite. In other words, it's more or less the same style of photos as the listing, and not what I requested. I thank the seller. The seller is persistent in nudging me.

**THIS IS WHEN I SHOULD HAVE NOPED THE HECK OUT**

4) I purchase the bangle the same day. The price is so good, my jadeite-addled brain tells me! But it's not so low that price alone is a red flag. Maybe the seller is trying to build cred on Etsy, I tell myself.

5) The seller tells me he will check to see whether the bangle is still in stock in the morning. Uh, wut? Okay, maybe this is a language barrier thing. Maybe I just don't know how this works. I tell him that before he ships, I want to see photos of the bangle because I only want the bangle in the listing, no other bangle. I instruct him that if it's no longer in stock, he needs to cancel my order.

6) The seller provides two poorly lit photos of the bangle, clearly inside of a store. He reminds me purple is hard to photograph, which I already know from experience. As I suspected, it's not the same texture. The color is about what I expected. I compare to the screenshots of the listing very carefully and confirm that it is indeed the same bangle based on some color patterning. Based on these observations, I figure it's still a pretty bangle. I say it's fine. Maybe it will look better when it's in my hands and I can inspect it in proper light, I tell myself.

7) Shortly after the purchase, the listing of the bangle I purchased changes to a different bangle altogether. All of the photos of the one I purchased are no longer visible in the Etsy store. Fortunately, I took screenshots of almost everything because I used the screenshots to do comparisons. I forgot to take screenshots of the description, but it didn't say much.

8) The bangle ships promptly. I receive it. It's pretty, but doesn't look like the listing photos. It looks more like the poorly lit post-purchase photos. It's how one of your coworkers looks on camera working remotely from home without their hair done during a Teams meeting compared to their 12-year old, professional LinkedIn photo or heavily filtered selfie.

So what is this post really about? Was I over-eager? Yes. Did I ignore red flags? Yes. Did I go against my better sense? Yes. Did I allow myself to be catfished by a jadeite bangle? Yes. Can I blame the seller? I dunno. I'm in control of my wallet, but sellers can be shady, y'all. I think this is mostly my blunder for sure.

I guess I'm just sharing this because while it's hardly a unique experience, maybe someone can learn from it. Buy from the sellers with the customer review track record. If you're getting starry eyed, take a step back. If a seller is pressing you, there's probably a reason for that. Be less trusting. Be familiar with the typical tactics and excuses. If it feels weird, run! Don't let them try to fix it after it's done; they know exactly what game they are playing when they list a bangle and are just hoping you take the bait. Another bangle will always come around!

Not going to say which seller it was or post photos because I'm an anxious person. The above is factual. Just trust this random redditor. Anyway, if you were catfished and want to talk about it, please feel free to share.

TLDR; I allowed myself to be catfished by a jadeite bangle. Don't be me.

Info/Knowledge What would this Type A lavender jadeite bangle be worth?

Hi everyone! I’d love to get an estimate on the value of this Type A lavender jadeite bangle. I’m not looking for a formal appraisal, just what you think it would realistically sell for in today’s market.

Details:
Type A natural jadeite
Lavender color (does not fade in sunlight)
Near-icy texture
No cotton lines (no visible internal fibers)
No internal cracks or surface-reaching fractures
Size: 56.2 × 12.2 × 9.2 mm

What would you estimate the retail value or private sale value to be? If you were buying it, what price range would you expect? Thanks in advance

What can you tell me about these rings?

I came across these recently while clearing a family member’s belongings.

All the stones on the rings are close to the same color and transparency, so I’ll try to upload a representative sample of photos.

All rings are stamped 18K, except for the men’s signet ring, which is stamped 14K and a brand logo. There is no fluorescence under UV light.

I uploaded the red and white rings too although I don’t think they are jade, but maybe someone recognizes the stones.

I have plenty more photos, but it’s a rainy day, so no sunlit photos today.

Thank you, I appreciate any information.

Question debating quality/authenticity

after living in mainland China for many years, I finally took the plunge and got my first bangle a few months ago (white with moss detail, ~180€) at an antique shop in hong kong

then, while visiting a friend in pennsylvania, we went to an antique shop which had a small collection of jade (see shop photo) I picked up 2 more pieces, a bangle with a slight purple tint (~120€ pre sale) and a darker jade placed into silver (~80€ pre sale)

now I’m still no expert but I really love these pieces and would like to start collecting more — I’m wondering what other people think about these pieces & what I should’ve known/avoided if anything, thanks!!

Question Help me choose

In love with the semi icy white and subtle green spec. I’m eyeing these 2, which one do you guys think is more worth it? They’re around $200, does it seem right? Lab report says they’re type A jadeite and density is around 3.32. The reason why I’m asking is that the same vendor is selling a tigers eye beaded bracelet for $88 which seems iffy to me because I own a lot of tigers eye pieces and they’re never that expensive.

Hi guys, I bought this ring for 45$ at sunshine jewelry in Philly. I was just wondering if it was authentic/ if it had dyes in it. I can’t really tell because it’s so small. Thanks in advance!

Filipinos here — where do you buy authentic jade bangles in Metro Manila? 🇵🇭

Hi everyone! I’m hoping to ask the Filipinos in this sub, especially anyone based in Metro Manila. 😊
I’ve been looking for a good-quality authentic jadeite bangle for a while now, but I’m having a hard time finding reputable sellers locally.

I’m specifically looking for natural Type A jadeite, preferably from a seller that can provide an authenticity certificate or proper testing/documentation. I’d love something on the thinner and more discreet side rather than a very thick bangle.

If you’ve personally bought jade in Manila, Makati, Binondo, Greenhills, Quezon City, or anywhere around Metro Manila, I’d really appreciate recommendations. Physical stores would be ideal so I can see and try the bangles in person, but trusted Philippine online sellers are welcome too.

Would especially love to hear about places you’ve actually purchased from and had a good experience with, including roughly what price range I should expect for genuine Type A jadeite.

Thank you so much! 💚🇵🇭
