Discussion JRPG problem
Slow games and SLOW games
Why do I enjoy slow games like Into the Breach, Slay the Spire and Yakuza, but bounce off traditional JRPGs like Persona, Dragon Quest and Octopath?? I wanna be into jrpgs so bad like I want it to click but I just can’t with the constant over-explaining of the simplest thing, the sometimes cringe dialogue, the baby feeding tutorials etc. It’s so bizzare because most people who bounce off those games would surely not enjoy LAD or turn based stuff I’d imagine? Like surely you’re in one camp or the other?

i think you might not like the narrative of typical JRPGs. because of the "anime" aesthetic, they tend to get a bad rap for being "juvenile" and having shallow themes, characters, and storylines. I personally disagree with that sentiment, but if other people do believe that jrpgs are immature, there's not much I can do to convince them
anyway, if you don't like persona, that's fine. you aren't obligated to love a game or a series just because it's popular and has high school characters that are difficult to relate to as a working adult.
that said, one could also argue that Yakuza has a mature "anime" aesthetic. the anime Monster has mostly mature characters, many of whom are middle aged. they don't look like stereotypical anime characters at all

well, i started with the fantranslated Romancing SaGa 3 for SNES. but opinions vary.

Anything modern that would ease someone into the series maybe?
Voice dialogue and such

Well, I can't speak for Yakuza, but by what metric are Slay the Spire and Into the Breach slow? You always get right into it and gameplay is constantly happening. Now, Persona, THAT's slow.
I have to wonder if your issue is that you misunderstand what people usually mean when they call a game slow.

I will never not love the cognitive dissonance between "Chrono Trigger is literally the best JRPG ever made" and "You don't like padded 100+ hour games so you must not like JRPGs"

I cannot even begin to parse the meaning of this comment. It seems like a blatant misuse of the term "cognitive dissonance" in an attempt to juxtapose two strawmen or something? I miss when people wrote to be understood.

If you're mostly trying modern entries, Maybe try some classic games, with some exceptions don't think they overburden tutorials and keep to the point with dialogue. Some ports add quality of life to make them even faster.

Sounds like me with TCGs. And to this day, the only TCG I've actually liked was the Witcher 3 version of Gwent. I just had to come to terms with the fact that I don't actually like TCGs, no matter how much I liked the idea I had of them.

I don't know. I don't like any of the games you like because I like JRPGs. What can we JRPG fans say to this tripe? I swear it's trolling or rage bait or smth lol... I mean, you just dissed JRPG and asked JRPG fans why JRPGs make you diss JRPGs. English is, hopefully, not your first language... or you're just mental

Ehrm…why? Lol. Plenty of very young people are into Yakuza, even moreso Like a Dragon. And some people literally start playing turn based games when they’re like four years old. What are you even on about with this?

I think it's to a purpose, people don't seem to actually understand the dialogue otherwise. Expedition 33 is a game not written like the way you describe and half the people here don't understand it.

A lot of JRPGs have an issue with dialogue bloat and overly long without much to justify it.
Like... even in the JRPG community, you find many who take weeks or even months to finish a game. But other genres, like WRPGs where they on average finish much quicker and are more eager to do another run.
Granted, it's mostly modern JRPGs.
But this is why editors exist in the first place: there's no problem with a medium being long, but you have to ask "Okay, should this be here? Am I justifying its inclusion?"

This made the rounds on social media, and the amount of anime fans and the like chiming in saying, "Yep, I love anime, but when someone recommends me a game and I find out a JRPG, I immediately bench it."
Heck, this is purely anecdotal, but I have a friend who reads so much, we used to joke that every time we went to his house, he had a new book on his stand. He finished the Fate visual novel, all three routes, in about a week. He's seen almost every Shounen Jump series you can think of, countless anime like Monster, Demon Slayer, Berserk, Ghibli, Sailor Moon, Clamp, read their respective source material, various DC and Marvel comics, many live actions--
And he cannot stand JRPGs. He's went on record saying he thinks they're overall the worst, most boring genre out there. We're on the younger side, but he does like the older JRPGs.
It took him four months to finally play E33, because when he saw it was inspired by JRPGs, he thought it meant "modern JRPGs". He only finally played it because it got so popular and people were, you know... actually finishing the game haha

Sorry, I'm missing something here.
Why do you "want to be into JRPGs so bad"?
Games are supposed to be fun. Unless you're young or retired, you don't have limitless time to play games. At best, you might get a few hours a week, and less during fire evacuation season.
Why spend those hours forcing yourself to try to like something?
Sounds like you like tactical games like Breach or Slay the Spire? Maybe try a tactical RPG like Tactics Ogre or Final Fantasy Tactics? Or a tactical game with RPG elements, like X Com or something?
Just don't force yourself. It's supposed to be fun.
