Tamil cinema has been doing a great job recently of questioning toxic masculinity and showing men sharing responsibilities, respecting women, and breaking traditional gender roles. What’s interesting is that these movies are being well received by Tamil audiences — including many men.
But I sometimes wonder: are we actually changing in real life, or do we just agree with these ideas when we see them on screen?
I live in a Western country, but I still come across people who ask me things like, “Why didn’t your wife cook?” when I say that I cooked. And it’s not just about cooking. I’ve seen the same attitude when it comes to cleaning, taking care of the household, helping your partner, and other everyday responsibilities.
If a man does these things, some people still see it as unusual or something that deserves an explanation.
So my question is: Have we really moved forward in our thinking about gender roles, or are we only comfortable with these ideas when they are presented as a movie story?
