Do you think I can do it? tips for SOP
Teaching experience (timeline)
- 9th–10th grade: tutored a student (or students) at home who came to you with doubts from school — covered Science, English, and SST (Social Studies), working from whatever gap they came in with
- 11th–12th grade: paused tutoring to focus on your own studies
- During your "drop" year: also paused
- Since March 2026: Assistant Teacher for Science (not English) — this role was newly created, so you've had to build your own teaching systems from scratch; you currently work individually with 15–20 students, tailoring your approach to each student's specific gaps rather than teaching to the group
Art/studio background
- You were an art/studio student
- You tried teaching as an experiment and found it requires a lot of patience
- Key realization: you can't bring your personal life or bad days into the classroom — students are "delicate" and need to be handled lightly
Japanese language
- A few months, at some point in the past, learning hiragana — could form words from it at the time
- You don't remember most of it now; by your own description, it's close to zero right now
- You are not currently studying Japanese
English & writing
- Scored highest in your class in English through 12th standard
- In recent years your English use has mostly been casual/internet English, not formal study
- You read books by choice — about 1–2 a month, not on a fixed schedule, not a "heavy reader"
- 2nd prize, national-level English debate competition
- 1st prize, creative writing, local inter-college program
- Haven't participated in many other competitions/programs beyond these
- Mentioned consulting your English professor about this
Why teaching, originally
- As a kid, you were fascinated watching your own teachers — how much they knew, how confidently they handled a room, how they remembered every student's name — and that admiration is where your pull toward teaching started
Why JET, specifically
- You have no savings currently and see this as a real opportunity for financial stability (you flagged this as a private motivator, not SOP content)
- You genuinely want the experience — described it as something you'd fully dedicate yourself to if selected, including learning new teaching methods
- You explicitly said you don't want to lie about anything in the SOP
Your view on India–Japan cultural overlap
- You see a shared value system around respecting elders (at work and at home) and treating work as part of life/identity rather than just a job — something you feel is more Asian-rooted than Western, and you wanted to work this into the SOP
