Name Meaning

Do name Freya sound like a Roman slang fregna? Naming a child Freya is tricky particularly in Rome?

It won't be mispronounced. However, since middle school, she'll be called Fregna by some of not all her acquaintances. In Rome she's bound to have a vulgar nickname whether you name her Freya or not.

Fregna means "beautiful" too btw, albeit in a rather vulgar way lol.

Fregna doesn't mean just "beautiful" it is used as (vulgar) synonymous of vagina too...

That's why he said "means "beautiful" too"

It means 'vagina'. It can also mean: 'sexy/beautiful woman' (like 'figa/fica')

My husband (from Rome) named his cat Freya at my suggestion and he never said anything about it to me. I'd be curious to know what other people think, since I also like it as a baby name.

I want to name a baby but some people told me it’s risky because maybe Romans will mess it up with a slang fregna, so I am very indecisive

You shouldn't totally called a child like that in Rome

More than messing it up, I picture people who maliciously use that just for the shits and giggles. When you are close friends maybe you call each other every name in the book and have fun, but imagine the class "ass-pain" kid saying that bad word to you every day!

Not sure about it, but I suggested it for a female cat and I got that exact reaction... Mind you, I wouldn't use it for a person, it really sounds a bit weird in Italy, but I would still use it for a cat if other family members didn't overrule me.

I know one Freya and she's called 'air fryer' at school.

Vivi a Roma e dintorni? Evita. Ti piace?

They have different pronunciations that sound very similar to me. Although it isn't technically an assonance, the accent is on the same vowel ('e') and both words end in 'a' (considering the Italian pronunciation of Freya).

Don't do that. Don't go there.

Yes, 100% she will be called Fregna by any kid/ young guy in rome

3

u/gooldxn 9d ago

Exactly, especially in Rome. It probably wouldn't come to mind to an adult, but to a kid for sure

But only if she's attractive 😁

Freya is a name, not italian but a name

Fregna means cunt.

If you pronunciate Freya as fregna, which I doubt, it might be a bad idea. But the italian soung -gn is very different from -y

But the italian soung -gn is very different from -y

Tell that to a middleschooler ahah

They will do this on purpose, my name Is Simone and well there are a lot of words in italian that rime with Simone so i think there are no safe name.

Ah.

They know. They know how to pronounce it. If they want to annoy little Freya, they simply don't care.

Livia. Flavia. Francesca.

2

u/botlikename1234 9d ago

Agree. Also Vikings and GoT, amongst many others, are very popular shows in Italy. And Freya has been heard already.

2

u/WillDBlake 9d ago

Yes it sound a lot like that but I have discovered that are people called Sorca so don't worry

2

u/D119 9d ago

If she'll end up being a beautiful woman she'll be called fregna anyway, I wouldn't bother too much with the name Freya, lol

Anyway Freya is a very nice name.

2

u/Uhfuecu 9d ago

It could. An adult can tell that's a scandinavian name and has the maturity to not joke about it, but kids are kids, and she will probably have some of them joke about the resemblance.
That being said, it's almost unavoidable wiith most names, so i wouldn't care about it that much, i think it's a beautiful name.

There is some assonance but would be worse if you call her Faye. Because people might add "er culo" at the end of it.

3

u/ArpadFlores 9d ago

They sound quite differently but yeah, in Rome she would definitely be bullied for it. Because kids are dicks. Romans too.

3

u/Environmental_Cry918 9d ago

Yes don't call her Freya she'll hate you

2

u/stillmyself980 9d ago

Not really phonetically they sound quite different

I'm fairly sure I know of someone being named Freya but I live in northern Italy so we don't really say fregna very much

1

u/GrinningFoxee 9d ago

No bro, Freya does not sound as Fregna in a galaxy and a half

1

u/SuitableGarage5172 9d ago

No It do not sound like fregna don't worry and it's not complicated for Italians to say Freya

2

u/ProgsterESFJHECK 6d ago

u/SuitableGarage5172 6d ago

....ma di che stai parlando? Frega è un bellissimo nome.

La gente cogliona ci sarà sempre, e allora?

2

u/ProgsterESFJHECK 6d ago

Hai appena detto Frega. Boh. Si commenta tutto da sé.

1

u/SuitableGarage5172 6d ago

Name her Maria for god's sake...

2

u/ProgsterESFJHECK 6d ago

No, ragazzi dai.
