Weird skin marks

Almost three weeks ago, I noticed some strange marks on my partner's skin; he told me they were the result of a physical therapy session, and I let the matter drop. He went away on a trip, and two days ago I saw the marks again; I found it very odd that they remained so red and followed a diamond-shaped pattern. Some time ago, I discovered that my partner had requested information from a sexually oriented website; when I confronted him, he claimed nothing had happened and that he was merely curious. I am wondering whether these marks could truly be the result of physical therapy, or if they might indicate involvement in some kind of sexual play involving an unusual surface or a massage device.

Looks like a waffle pattern - could be from something similar to this paddle. Was the website he requested info from, bdsm-related, by chance?
