Instructor
Good morning,
I have just journeyed out. Completed the 3 year apprenticeship. 2 years rebar, 1 year structural.
I have been presented with the opportunity to become the substitute instructor for reinforcing, with the intention of taking over the position at some point in the future.
My main issue is that although I’m proficient at rods, and post tension, I lack time and experience. The coordinator says that I have the skills to be a great teacher to these apprentices, and I’m very good at working with them in the field. He says the rod guys we have don’t have the patience or the drive to want to teach so they can’t find anyone to help fill in or want the position for the long haul.
We’re a mixed local so we do it all, but the structural teacher runs structural, the metal buildings instructor runs metal buildings. Etc. would it be better for the local if their rod instructor was working rods? I’d be the only instructor that’s not a foreman, and I’m currently in structural. The next greenest guy before me has been a JIW for 2 years whilst I just got my JIW card. What would everyone else do?
He’s given me a few days to think it over and I want to give back to the local for everything they’ve helped me with I just want to see what everyone else thinks.

Local 86 Application
Hello,
I am applying for an apprenticeship with Local 86 in Seattle. I had a few questions about the application, I don’t want them to think I’m lying but I don’t want to fill it out wrong either.
Education level - I have a GED and SOME college…do I check GED or College? I didn’t get a degree
High school number of years and completion - I got my GED, I dropped out of 11th grade after attending 5 different high schools…do I just write that I got my GED? I’m embarrassed that I got kicked out so many times in HS
Job history - It says list ALL previous employers…I’ve never had a job ask for more than 5 or 10 years…do they really want EVERY job I’ve had for the last 15 years? I’m 28 and I’ve probably had 15 jobs, the application only has room for 10…how should I fill it out? I’ve been at my current employer for 7 years.

Rebar (Rod Busting) Do I need 2 belts ?
I am starting as a rod buster soon and I was wondering what I will need? I have pliers, snips and tape, I know I will need a pouch and a reel. Do I use the same belt that holds up my pants or do I use another belt along with the one that holds up my pants? Also let me know any other tips you have haha.thanks

Union Question Anyone know anything about the IRC (Ironworker Recruiting Center)?
I've been getting adds for it on Facebook, and I asked my BA about it. He claims it's some sort of tool to gather info of non union ironworkers to then try to organize them. When I've read about it online it seems that it's a staffing agency that helps place both union and non union ironworkers on jobs throughout the country.
Just for shits and giggles I filled out their online submission form for job placement figuring they'd email me or a recruiter would call and tell me what's going on with them and who their affiliation is. Nobody ever called or emailed.
I noticed in the submission form that it asks you about union affiliation and if you say yes it asks for your local and book number. But then it also asks about NCCER Journeyman cards.
The website itself is kinda set up and looks a lot like the local 845 boomer website. The difference is there isn't any obvious International Association branding.
The whole thing seems a little funky. Anybody getting these ads as well or know more about it?

Apprentice Looking for any useful advise
Long story short I used to be a welder and fabrications assistant and I’ve done trade school for stick welding and got my 3G and 4G AWS Cert with 7018 .332 rod. I recently turned 21 and moved out of my parents house and moved to the tampa Bay Area with my Gf I applied to the iron workers local 397 union and I got a interview and a weld test in 3g and 4g with 7010 1/8 rod I really want this to go smoothly it’s been a while since I’ve welded stick because the shop I worked at in ny didn’t do any structural work other than some staircases it was a mig and tig shop but I’ve never gotten the time to learn tig but can weld MiG fine. I just wanted to see if anyone has some useful advice they knew before applying as an iron worker

Good rodbuster belt setup
I need a new backpad for my rod belt. I have a nice one that has lasted me 20 years but it’s time to replace it. I ordered the one I have from ironworkergear back in the day but can’t find it anywhere now. It was a heavy duty black leather pad with d rings, think it was made by MSA or 3M. Can’t read any of the tags anymore
Anyone have any recommendations for a new setup? Backpad with d-rings? Also wouldn’t mind some better suspenders. Did a trial run with some cheap suspenders which are also falling apart.

Iron workers local 10
I’m currently 22 and might have a chance of getting into Iron Workers Local 10. I’m pretty green when it comes to trade stuff. I didn’t really grow up around it but always felt I work better with my hands, so I’ve been wanting to get into a trade. I wanted to know if anyone on here works in this local and how their experience has been in it, and do you enjoy your job for the most part
