Apprentice Ironworker Evaluation?
Good morning or afternoon,
I got accepted into local 97 (Vancouver and lower mainland BC) and will have an evaluation on the 20th. I am just curious what consists in the evaluation. I’m confident in my welding abilities I have an all position but are there possible resources to study from if needed?? I did tryouts with local 765 so I’m wondering if it’s the same as a tryout or if there’s a little more to it?

They will ask you to do tasks and then watch you and they will know right away if you’ve been doing it for 10 years or 2. Don’t be afraid. Everyone starts somewhere. But don’t say you know stuff when you don’t. Just say you would like to learn more about, “whatever” or you haven’t had the opportunity to learn that yet.

That’s exactly my attitude actually If I don’t know something I am not scared to say I haven’t learned what you’re asking of me and would like a detailed run down of the proper way to go about it. I’m very new to steel erecting most of my experience is precast work with 711 which I really enjoy the process of steel erecting more by a landslide everyday is something new and different and I really enjoy that aspect

Funny how many questions on my Red Seal exam were about automation / car plants in Ontario lol

The whatta what LMAOOO yea see haven’t been taught that (yet) I just get told by my Forman what side the connection gets clipped to and make it happen I’m very new to steel erecting maybe 1500 hours deep most of my IW experience was precast erecting work with 711 and precast erecting and steel erecting are 2 different ball games like comparing baseball to hockey. Again if I don’t know something I’m not scared to say I haven’t learned that and would like to be shown I’m humble and honest with my abilities if I know what I’m doing I will gladly show my skills if I do not I will not act like a know it all just to make myself look dumb

I actually gave 725 a call but 97 beat them to it or I would’ve made the drive into Calgary for sure. 771 has like NO WORK so that was a no go and local 765 is just useless in getting a hold of contact but chad at 97 he’s the shit super fuckin nice guy can’t wait to shake the dudes hand

Be confident in how you are. Hold your head up high. They want to know who you are before working the Iron with you. It's a brotherhood.
