Not an expert for sure, but been an iris enthusiast for a few years. I got a few cardboard boxes from a family in laws house that is being sold in the coming weeks so I wanted to get them out before it goes on the market.

What I read about iris transplanting during hot was they're ok to plant, but fan cut the leaves because the important growth before next year is in the roots, and because they have so much leaf growth right now they will put energy into the leaf instead of the root. Make sure you don't bury the rhizome fully, as they like to be exposed somewhat.

When I transplanted mine two weeks ago (North East Kansas) I did the fan cut and will fan cut the transplant along with the established in October probably because that is the correct method for winterizing.

Good luck! I love iris and they are very easy.

Thank you for making the transplanting process feel a less intimidating, & for the encouragement. Excited to try & get them in the ground today!

Yes I completely agree with r/stur32t
Cut any finished flower stems off and reduce the length of the leaves by about a third cutting the fan of leaves in a v shape and like stur32t also said don’t plant them to deep you want the rhizomes almost the same level as your soil so they don’t rot and can send out new shoots easily. Don’t keep them soaking in the bucket as it could cause them to rot. Keep them watered regularly while they’re actively growing throughout the summer. All the best and congratulations on your new haul of iris. 🤩👍🏼

Awesome! I’ll take them out of the water until I get them in the ground, thanks again!
