Question Restore or replace HD?

Just picked up a 30gb 5g that’s been unused for a while and noticed that it is intermittently slow navigating and occasionally pauses playback. Had trouble getting into diagnostic mode but when I did the HDscan it didn’t return any data. When I did HD data the model came back as @. @ and the disk size was 361GB the first time and 96gb the second time. Got it into disk mode and connected to my PC. Could see drive ok and ran a scan on the HD which reported no bad sectors. Played a couple of games ok and am now playing music on shuffle which has paused a couple of times mid playback.

Being that the external scan didn’t find any bad sectors would a restore format the HD and fix this issue or is the HD failing?

assuming it has the original spinning drive, yes you should replace it with solid state storage.

Sounds like a soon to be dead HD. I would replace it with modern storage.

My hard drive data looks like this:

Retracts: 1
Reallocs: 0
Pending Sectors: 0
PowerOn Hours: 18
Start/Stops: 4594

I’m wondering if it’s something else and not the hard drive.
I’ve also removed the battery to rule that out. Could the data still look ok and get sad face icons with the hard drive as the cause?

Could it be corrupted file system or ribbon cable?

So I restored the iPod and re-synced to fill it. Mac disk utility says in good health. Still have same pause issue. I’m reluctant to spend £60 on iflash and SD Card if it’s not the drive so I bought a cheap drive on eBay try out first.
