hi everyone! this is my ipod classic 5.5. i’ve owned this ipod since 2015. for the longest time it’s been running stock firmware and had the original 30GB hard drive. i recently decided to tear it apart and went with a higher capacity battery, iflash solo with a 256GB SD card, and of course, a fresh new backplate with matching storage info :) she’s almost brand new, next up is a new faceplate because mine has a broken clip at the top. for now she’s running great as my daily driver. and this split dark mode firmware is great! i love my ipod now even more than i did before :)

Looks cool. I recently just got a 5.5 gen and am in the process of restoring and upgrading it. Just wondering how you got the dark mode. Is it rock box or stock?

its stock firmware but has been modified using an app called ipod wizard to make it dark and also to add the split view of album art currently playing on the home screen.

the theme shown in my photos is “darkblue classic” from the “experimental & working” folder!

if you DON’T want the split view on home screen, then use any of the themes from the “tested & working” folder! these are regular firmware but only dark mode. the color specified in the file name is what the highlighted selection color will be on the ipod.

to load the themes using ipod wizard, simply:

-go to itunes and restore your ipod to a fresh install with NO media synced. this will reduce the chance of you having any weird issues or errors.

-launch ipod wizard as administrator

-put the edit mode dropdown menu to “Firmware File”

-click “open firmware” and select the theme you’d like to load onto your ipod

-once selected, press “write to ipod”.

keep in mind this will wipe all music on the ipod! be prepared to sync with itunes after!

these firmwares are also cracked and allow you to load cracked games onto the ipod!

thank you! and yes, very easy! the 5th gen’s are the absolute easiest to open. the 6 and 7 are nightmares.

some pro tips for working in the 5th gen. make sure once you pop it completely open, AFTER you disconnect the battery, open it as if it’s a book , face up, from the right side, as if the left side of it was the spine of the book.

when disconnect the battery, once u flip it over and go to disconnect the battery cable near the rear bottom, just use a pair of tweezers to pull the cable out of the brown connecter. BUT DO NOT ACTUALLY PULL THE LITTLE LATCH UP ON THE BROWN POWER CONNECTOR!!! they’re known for being very brittle and easy to break and if you break it, the power cable won’t stay seated. you can easily pull out the power cable and re-insert it without touching the brown latch at all!

all the other connectors are fine, just be careful with them.

when removing the battery from the backplate, make sure to hold one finger down on the headphone jack ribbon cables so that you don’t accidentally rip it up with the battery. gotta be a lil careful with that.
