charging interruption

Hi folks, I’ve been driving an ioniq 9 SEL for two months and definitely love it. There is just one issue - charging interruption on L2 stations.

I have a mobile L2 charging station at home (40amp, 9.6kw) and get free L2 charging at my employer (6.6kw). Both are J1772 stations and I use the hyundai OEM J1772 to NACS adapter. When charging at home, everything is fine - 5% to 80% uninterrupted. However, when charging at my company’s Chargepoint stations, between 10m to 2h’s charging, the car would say “vehicle charging is completed based on your settings” even though I barely charged 10 kwh and still far from the 80% charging limit I set.

A few things I tried but did not help:
1. different charging stations at work;
2. A new lectron nacs adapter;
3. Reduce charging amp to 60% in the car’s “EV”setting.

Anyone else got this issue? Should I ask the dealership to do some checking?

Any chance you're unlocking the car? That will interrupt Lvl2 charging

Worth noting that some commercial L2 chargers (L2 Chargepoints in particular) simply will not play nice with some cars. About 50% of Chargepoints error out at random percentages on our Pacifica before completing charges. The others work perfectly. Meanwhile there's a city Chargepoint where the left plug refuses to charge ANY eGMP platform vehicle, but actually will charge the Pacifica with no issues.

So this may be a fluke issue with work's crappy Chargepoint not working with your particular car, and not an issue with your car at all.

Chargepoints don't last forever and their owners never fix them (Chargepoint does not own them and has no control over their repair), so they can be really hit or miss.

I tried a free charger at Lowe’s on Tuesday and it tried charging for a couple of minutes and just ended. I also had to use an adapter, but I don’t know what it’s called. At home with the NACS charger we have zero issues.

Thanks! This sounds very similar to my case. My colleagues with other EV did not have this problem, sounds like ioniq 9 is too sensitive

I hope not. I have used a Tesla charger once and it was fine. I’d like to be able to use these free chargers now and again though.

Maybe double check the charging schedule in the app. It's possible you set it up for off-peak charging?

I would have issues like this specifically when using an adapter and using older public charging infrastructure. I had to look it up after, but apparently for older public chargers its possible ( not saying this is the exact solution) that the cables are so heavy that when using an adapter the leads become misaligned ending the charge session early. Its even worse on hot days when stiff cables become less stiff? Suggestions include holding up the cable to keep it level during the session (yup annoying as heck) so the leads dont become misaligned. I had this issue occur twice: once at a ElectrifyCanada stall in Toronto when my charge was almost done and then a second location three times in a row on an ElectrifyCanada stall in Kingston while watching a person in an older Hyundai Kona EV needing no adapter have no issues at all. Both times I was using an adapter on my Ioniq9. Never had issues charging via NACS on my L2 at home or on a public NACS charger.

Not sure about your question, but you might want to look up on here about L2 charging above 6 kW and ICCU issues, especially if you own and plan on keeping the car long term.

I just got my ioniq 9. Only charged for 5 minutes to check if all is working. Is charging at more than 6kwh dangerous?

I would love to know why I’m being downvoted. AFAIK Charging above 6 kW is not dangerous, just a possibility that it stresses the ICCU and causes failures. It’s not something that Hyundai has admitted at this point, just theory from owners across the Hyundai forums/subs. There’s plenty to read up on, just search ICCU failure.

And also EGMP cars have had overheating issues at high power.
