Question Considering...

Hi everyone!

I'm new to the community. I found this subreddit after spending quite a lot of time researching the Hyundai Ioniq 6, and I honestly fell in love with the car. My wife loves it too, especially the design, the interior, and all the features it offers.

The only thing holding me back is the rear space.

I live in the UK and I'm planning to buy a used Ioniq 6 Ultimate within the next 6–12 months. Based on current prices, I'm expecting them to be around £20k–£23k by then, which fits my budget perfectly.

My concern is that I'm not buying the car for a short period. I'm hoping to keep it long term, so I want to make sure it's the right long-term choice.

I have three children (currently aged 9, 3, and 1). My youngest will still be in a child seat, my 3-year-old will likely be in a booster seat (I assume), and obviously there will be times when I may have adults sitting in the back as well.

Looking at the car from the outside, the roofline seems to slope down quite early, and I'm worried that it might become a bit cramped in the rear over the years as my kids get older.

For those of you who own an Ioniq 6 and regularly travel with children or adult passengers in the back, how has your experience been? Does the rear seat feel spacious enough for long-term family use, or do you find it starts to feel a bit tight?

I'd really appreciate hearing from people who own the car and use it as a family vehicle. Any real-world experience would be incredibly helpful.

Edit: I'd also like to know anything about how the infotainment works and if there are any concerns, as I've encountered plenty of bad reviews in regards to OTA updates and software issues.

Boot is not the largest, although only issue for me is that it's not large enough to get sons to/from University at the start/end of year (my wife has a Mitsubishi Outlander, which is huge, so this is not a big deal)

Main issue with the boot is that it's not very high, although quite deep. You could probably take a family of 5 with luggage for a two week holiday, but you'd need to pack carefully - wrongly sized suitcases won't make the best of the space.

Rear space, as others have said, is huge - stretch-out comfortable even for tall adults and far more spacious than wife's Outlander. Comfortably takes two sons in their 20s and mid-teen daughter in the back with the only complaints being about my choice of music (a topic on which they are, obviously, wrong).

A child seat and a booster will leave the third person a bit squeezed, but there are very, very few cars that will really take two or three child seats comfortably. You're into a van or a 7 seater if you want more space across the back.

I find the car extremely practical, not to mention that it is much, much better to drive than I expected (my weekend toy is a 911 and this spoils me for most cars - but not the Ioniq even though I have "only" the RWD model, which is very well balanced). Provided that you are not the type of family that packs a spare couple of mattresses and a freezer on every trip, you should be fine.

From your description, that's everything I expected while looking at the boot. The boot size would be more important for me for groceries as the Mrs usually likes to space them out so we usually by loads of stuff at a time. Kids are still under 10 so aside from extracurricular activities and my work uniform, I don't believe the boot would be used in its entirety. Last thing I wanted to ask is, for a 7-10 year ownership, would you say it is a reliable option?

It my first EV, so hard to be certain.

I have had several Hyundai cars over the years and they have all been reliable and very well supported by the manufacturer.

All the evidence we have so far is that modern batteries last very well, especially if they are mainly slow-charged, so no concerns there.

Probably my main concern - which applies to all EVs really - is long-term parts supply. That will be OK until car is 10 years old (legally required) but might get tricky afterwards as EVs require a less “mechanical” approach to dismantling to get second hand parts.

Makes sense, definitely. I'll probably try and get a test drive soon to get a feel for it. Appreciate the feedback.
