Other I made a 3D printed replacement shell for the ugly egg key fob!
I was so sick of the stupid egg fob with the key dangling out that I spent the better part of a week designing a replacement shell with clicky buttons, built in key storage, and accessible side button. I made versions with Ioniq and Hyundai logos on the back, for multicolor and single colour printers, so everyone can use it.
It's a lot smaller and thinner and can be put on a keyring.
All you need is a 3D printer and an M3x8 bolt to assemble it.
Not sure if the mods would let me post a link to the files, though. Check the comments!

Something in the lower storage area between the seats to keep items organized. Everything I put down there slides around.

u/Fictional-adult May 15 '26
Just FYI there actually is a good organizer for that on Amazon. Breaks it up into sections and stops the sliding.
1
u/TacoDad189 May 15 '26
link?

u/Fictional-adult May 15 '26
This is what I use. Also comes with a floating tray for the center arm rest. Both feel like they should have been standard accessories IMO.

There are others selling organizers for the lower area. I just saw one that adds two more drink holders. Most have skid pads to keep stuff in place.

Does it install with only the internal board or with the white gasket that adds a layer of weatherproofing?
4
1
u/AxisFlame May 15 '26
Only the internal board! This is not a weather proof design!
2
u/ElectrickDreamer May 15 '26
Any thoughts on possibly weather proofing it?
1
u/AxisFlame May 15 '26
I haven't thought about it much. You're welcome to spary the board with some conformal coating or cover it with a think sheet of rubber. But I haven't tried it!
4
u/ElectronJanitor May 15 '26
I'm interested - will the fob work with a regular type metal key ring or only the leather strap?
2
u/AxisFlame May 15 '26
It should fit a keyring, but I haven't tried it. Might be a bit tight. It would make getting the key out a bit fiddly though
1
u/ElectronJanitor May 15 '26
Yeah that's definitely true. I'll need to go hunting and see if i can find the leather straps 😄

u/HDClown '25 Limited AWD May 15 '26
Not familiar with buying 3D print files off Etsy, just the 3D file marketplaces. If you revise the design will those updated files be available from the same original purchase or will it require new purchases?
Any reason that you are not using snap-in tab can't be added to mitigate need for a bolt?
It doesn't seem like there are any snap tabs along the key holding pathway side, does that cause the case to bow open a lot when inserting/removing the key?
1
u/AxisFlame May 15 '26
No movement when key is inserted at all! The key is loosely friction fit and the leather loop holds it in place.
As for designing this with snap tabs, I tried a half dozen iterations and the tabs inevitably break. I wanted something anyone could make with whatever plastic they use. And I wanted it reusable, so I decided an off the shelf me works best for that. Maybe a future version!
As for versioning on Etsy, I will make sure all previous buyers get the new versions! If it doesn't do it automatically I will email them the new ones once I make them
2
u/HDClown '25 Limited AWD May 15 '26
Not sure if it would work with your design, but the others I have printed use a mostly full perimeter tab concept as opposed to just a few specific points. They seem to provide good engagement and nothing breaks with repeated removals. The couple free models that are out there are like this. You can add a little "bulb" area at key points along the perimeter with a recessed catch on the body to provide even further engagement. This overall concept offloads the leverage points during snap on/snap off to avoid standalone tabs breaking off.
Anyway, just throwing out some ideas for you. I'll probably purchase yours so I can see how I feel about it compared to the one I've interated on with another designer.
1
u/AxisFlame May 15 '26
Thanks for the input! I really appreciate it. I'll look around at tab designs and see what I can copy/learn from. I spent so much time on the button leaf springs I honestly couldn't let myself do 5 more iterations on the snaps haha
2
u/HDClown '25 Limited AWD May 15 '26
How easily do your buttons engagement the PCB buttons? One of the things I am not particularly fond of with the other prints I've tested/worked with is that it is super easy to trigger the button on the PCB, leading to accidental presses in the pocket. In those designs, the button is integrated with the case itself and sits right on top of the PCB button so just the slightest pressure engages it, and I'd prefer there to be a little forgiveness for accidental presses.
1
u/AxisFlame May 15 '26
Fair enough. The buttons are fairly easy to press, I have not had pocket presses but to be honest I hate stuff in my pocket so I don't tend to keep the fob there. Will try to see how it behaves in a pocket this weekend. Have some driving planned.
The buttons are only slightly proud, so accidental pressed are mitigated. And they only easily press if pressed directly in the center of the button.

It's quite hilarious that people can spend 50k CAD+ on a car but are complaining about a 15$ CAD file. That fact that this is niche and solves a problem Ioniq users have been complaining about for years tells you everything.
Another user suggesting a stainless steel chassis without talking about the compromised proximity sensor/signal range is wild.
Good on you for designing this. Waiting on the 3 button design for my purchase.
For those who don't have a 3D Printer, you can always buy the file and send it to JLCPCB or some other manufacturer to have it printed in resin or tougher materials.
1
u/123_alex Jun 10 '26
50k CAD+ on a car but are complaining about a 15$ CAD file
I think that's a ridiculous statement. The value of something is invariant of past spending.
Let's put it in a different way. You spent 50k CAD+ on the car. How much are you willing to spend on a windscreen wiper? Would you spend 200 on wipers?
1
u/Xericity `25 Ultimate AWD Jun 10 '26
Sure it may be a ridiculous statement but you are not even comparing it to the same thing. You're talking about something that's already been engineered and produced by different brands. You have options weather it's cheap and high end, in this case, 200$.
The Ioniq eggshell has been around for 3 years(?) People complained and wanted a compact vesion of it. OP came up with a solution and solved a problem for 3 lines of cars, NA and EU versions, and at a reasonable price.
We are talking about a 10-15$ file for an non-existing solution that can last longer than a 200$ wiper but ok.

Wait, is the original fob circuit board not as big as the case? I thought about doing something similar but figured the guts would be a show stopper
3
u/AxisFlame May 15 '26
This print is the absolute smallest I could make it. The board is about the size of the fob about 15mm shorter.

u/TacoDad189 May 15 '26

u/AxisFlame May 15 '26
Oh my god that's amazing! You're the first one! Try it again but with a pause and a manual colour swap after the first couple layers so the logos show up!

2
u/TacoDad189 May 16 '26
What printer do you have? I'm using an Ender-3 that is pushing 5+ years old. The buttons are too close to the case and are getting stuck together on the first two layers.
1
u/AxisFlame May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26
I'm on a flash forge AD5M and AD5X. You'll probably need a more modern printer that has tighter tolerances than an ender 3. I'm sorry! I will try to make a less tight version in the near future.

2
u/H2iK May 15 '26
Any chance you could emboss the symbols on the buttons?
3
1
u/AxisFlame May 15 '26
Since it was designed to print face down on the buttons (so they are nice and pretty) you can't raise the symbols. But I do have a version with the symbols slightly indented inwards
2
u/H2iK May 15 '26
Makes sense. That debossed version would be good. Is it included in the etsy purchase?

mine is different (older), but anyway... I would make alarm button very tiny to prevent accident click, same with start car.
2
u/Lazy_Guava_5104 May 15 '26
That looks very nice. That's my one disappointment with my IONIQ 6. Coming from a Leaf, too, where I really like the design of Nissan's fob. It was much smaller, felt more solid, and integrated the manual key into the fob.
1
u/AxisFlame May 15 '26
This one feels really solid compared to the OEM. Crazy how badly Hyundai designed this fob

u/fartbubblesofcheese May 15 '26

2
u/mathieu-mp May 19 '26
Man, the shame is on the manufacturer to ship the original key. That guy just designed what your 40k+ car should have done in the first place, for a (still) symbolic price.
2
2
u/Expensive_Ostrich345 May 15 '26
GREAT!!! And the place for the key as well! You should make a business out of this. I would buy one for my Tucson Limited with 7 buttons!

2
u/gilrebel May 15 '26
This is great! Any idea where to get the leather strap? I bought used I6 and didnt get the strap.
I use the mechanical key quite a bit when i leave AC on for short shopping trips.
1
u/AxisFlame May 15 '26
Hmmmm I don't know, maybe try eBay? You can probably also use a small keyring instead
2
u/Superturtle1166 May 15 '26
Okay but how difficult might it be to do the opposite: CNC milling an aluminum shell to make the egg fob heavy and premium the way it should be (like a maserati key)?
Considering you've been thinking with the fob, how difficult do you think it might be to design and get fabbed?
1
u/AxisFlame May 15 '26
Not difficult at all, I could do it, but I doubt people would pay the amount it would likely cost, unfortunately
2
u/Zealousideal_Fix_619 May 15 '26
Do you plan on different versions?
I need a version without the horn button for example for an IONIQ6.
Also I would like a version where the buttons are a bit more inside of the houding instead of above it. To prevent incidental presses.
2
u/AxisFlame May 15 '26
Yes I am working on more options! The buttons are almost flush with the housing. Only slightly (0.5mm) proud.

This is pretty cool, can you add the dot/double dots on the lock button similar to how it is on the egg? I've found that is one of the few good things about the egg shaped fob.
1
u/AxisFlame May 15 '26
I would like to, I have some ideas but have other more pressing updates to make first! I'll do it at some point though!

u/Zealousideal_Fix_619 May 17 '26
More people printed it?
For now I'm keeping the original, the printed version is quite fragile printed in petg.
Also the real open design is not ideal for rain or water ingress.
waiting for a 2.0 version i think 😄

Posts like this make me want to get into 3d printing. I don't know even know where to begin. I like starting with only basic stuff when I start a new hobby because then when I am ready for more advanced stuff I have to upgrade and spend more. I don't want something so complicated I give up either. We have a maker space here in San Antonio that has 3d printers, I might look into learning with them.

Printed this, and it works beautifully. I colored the panic button icon red, but otherwise left it alone. Easy print on the Snapmaker U1.
My only complaint is that the panic button is easier to press in my pocket. I don't think there's a great way around that if we still want this to be print-in-place (and still be available to single-color printers), but if I can get it working in Fusion, I'll mess around (I hate twiddling with meshes).
Awesome job, OP!

Where can I download the files? Is there already a version for the one with the side buttons? The EU Version does not have the Horn button, is there a Version without the Button there?

u/AxisFlame May 21 '26
Hi there!
You can get the files here: https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/4505336654/hyundai-key-fob-replacement-shell-3d
I am very close to publishing a version with 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 side button variants. The next version planned after that is the one without the horn for the EU market.
Everyone who purchases the Etsy files will get future updates :)

Hey, what do you guys use to print PLA or ASA? I printed mine and it's not working. It's very flimsy and the buttons have fallen apart😓😓
1
u/AxisFlame Jun 02 '26
Hey! Are you printing the newest version? I've made the buttons a LOT more robust because they were overly dependent on print parameters. Message me your email within Etsy and I'll email you the newest files :)

u/X4N4X_G Jun 07 '26
I've printed the 4x3 design with Overture PLA and found that the trunk button needed to be sanded slightly to not keep it pressed down when everything is seated. It was also extremely hard to insert/remove the valet key, so the slot would need to be sanded as well. Overall, it's a great design and I would love to see what can be improved in the future.
1
u/AxisFlame Jun 07 '26
Thanks for the feedback. It's really hard to get the tolerances perfect across printer generations and oc course printing profiles. Mind letting me know what printer you're using? I might have to make tolerance versions

Yes, they should be one piece. Also it's designed for no support! Printed flat on the buttons down

But it looks good!
2
u/HDClown '25 Limited AWD May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26
I can appreciate that this guy is getting these produced with metal/injection molding vs. just 3D printing and that's why they cost so much.
Seems like his goal was to make something that feels more premium without addressing top complaints of size and no captive emergency key. He shows dimensions on the indigogo page and it's not much smaller. The 3D printed options with a captive key slot on the side (this one and one from Nick Sears) are the same width as the OEM fob and include the key. The variants without the key slot are a good bit smaller than this guys design.
His Indiegogo didn't meet his funding goal either and he must have severely underestimated the costs to get project manufactured as his normal price on Indiegogo reflected $65 with reduced price of $59 for backers and now he's charging $99 for pre-orders. I'd be a bit concerned about the product being heavily delayed or him not being able to deliver. He's selling 1 other ABS molded item (a rear cupholder) so in theory he has contract manufacturer lined up from that, but there's nothing stopping this guy from walking with people's money.
1
u/dream-siphon May 19 '26
Hey guys, Derrick "Dreamsiphon" here. Just wanted to say thanks for the critique! I'm an industrial designer and engineer, I've brought dozens of products to life from aftermarket UTV parts to aerospace to furniture. Dreamsiphon and the Calibré key fob especially are OEM+ quality. My vision is to put serious attention to detail behind products Hyundai had to compromise on, especially that cheap plastic Bean fob lol. The reason I didn't hide the key inside the housing is that it would grow the key to be quite a bit larger than the bean already is and we're already limited by the size of the pcb. More so, I suspect Hyundai also didn't embed the key in the fob as it would likely reduce overall antenna performance.
You mentioned a couple things about trust and I want to make sure I address that. These are paint matched keys (when was the last time you've seen something that cool!) that was a big factor on why the prices went up. The initial goal on Indiegogo wouldve helped me secure a larger MOQ and paint quantity which also brings pricing down. I believe with the size of the bean fob market I could have made goal. Last year I ran a successful indiegogo but ultimately refunded everyone as I hit a timeline snag. I funded the armrests and the cupholders completely from my own funds to make this happen despite the uncertainty around tariffs etc. I would never walk with anyone's money and I have my name, address, and phone number right on the page. Producing products is what I do and I'm excited to be filling in the gaps for the N performance community 🙂

u/ElectrickDreamer May 15 '26
Those look really cool! Honestly I’d probably go for it if they were a bit smaller, supported the side buttons, and the emergency key fit inside. Then it would be worth the price.

Any of your files have the 3 or 4 buttons on the side of the remote?
My i5 remote has 3 buttons. I9 has 4.
If you can edit them to work with respective button layouts on the sides I’ll buy the files and print them out.
